Here's a few extra tips on SSS in R13.

Stuff that really slows down SSS

global illumination

Displacement

The shorter the path length, the longer the render time.

Stuff that speeds up SSS

Go into the Advanced tab of the SSS shader and change the Sample density from 100% to lower. You can get away with 50% if you change smoothing from 0% to about 10-20% Big speed up on test image from 2 hours 41 minutes render down to 2 hours 11 minutes and both looked the same.
