The most heart wrenching thing is remembering David Purely try and try to roll Roger Williamson's car over while its burning. You can see him in pain but he keeps trying. All the while the marshals are just standing there. Its sad that it took 20 years for someone else to die for the FIA to finally get motivated.
This guys are right, f1 has come a long way since the 50´s, we havent seen a f1 fatality in 17 years, and that is amazing, cuz if u look back at the old days, if 20 drivers started the season, perhaps only 15 would finish it
@krispragnell19 Excellent point and in fact i will never watch the movie Senna either 'cause as great as he was, his rivals have been portrayed as villians and that's just total crap.
F1 shouldn´t be aiming to be 100% safe. The danger that is involved makes car racing stand out from other sports like football.
Don´t forget that many fatalaties of the 70s en particularly the 80´s (de Angelis) were not because of the accident itself, nor the car that was to dangerous, nor the track. It just was the aftermath that caused the fatalaty, at de Angelis his crash it took minutes before the ambulance came to the scene.
Ratzenberger died during qualifying NOT the race also Senna was THE best driver of that era... thats why it was suck a shock. Just like when Jim Clark died in 1968... he was the best of his era
Alot of people my have forgotten the passing of Roland in 94 or saw him as a blip in the radar. But his death affected Ayrton so much. He would've never forhotten if he was still alive.
they dont forget Ratzenberger people they are talking about drivers killed during the actual race. Roland was killed during qualifying and Barricello was injured during the friday practice.
from 1994 we had only accidents like Schumacher 99 (silver) , Fisichella 2002 (magny), Massa (hungary). Of course we had deaths. Marchals in Monza 2000 and Melbeurne 2001 but now cars are incradible safe.
When you look at Sato-Heidfeld crash from A1 ring or Burti Spa 2001, Kubica Canada 2007 then you know why they spend those milions. And those milions are well spend

@s1003232 F1 should not aim to be 100% safe in the sense that it should not require everybody to drive like a granny at 55 mph.
F1 should be 100% safe in the sense that wide runoffs, tecpro barriers, HANS, nomex suits and stringent inspections are all mandatory.
Safety in F1 should mean that Mark Webber can do a backflip and hit the wall at substantial speed, and still walk away, NOT that he never crashes.
I believe this is how you expect that phrase to be interpreted.
