hi fellows, the purpose of this tutorial is to teach some fundamentals of lighting in 3ds Max. Yes, it is more complicated than using the mental ray renderer + lights, and if you look closely, you will find another how-to movie on illuminating the same scene using mr and the daylight system. Much easier, as you say, but this one teaches other possibilities if & when you decide not to use mental ray.
This guy makes the process of lighting much more difficult than what it actually is in 3d max. Besides, he's using the default 3d max scanline renderer. I use the Mental ray renderer which is much more sophisticated and I can get the same result much faster and uncomplicated. I like this guy tuts but this one in particularly is not to my liking.
i think that its always important to know the basics of any program. thanks man, love your tutorials <3
