I don't think that is an original SS-4L neck, pretty sure they were all jumbo Fender style headstocks. Certainly all 5 of mine are. Don't blame him or a prior owner from changing as most of them did not have a torsion rod or reinforcement and they banana badly.
dumb question: were you using any pedals or are all of the tones different variations on the guitar's switches?

Wow I'm jealous of your headstock! My '64 SS-2L has a huge semi-strat looking thing that is almost as big as the body lol.
