  • Hey i noticed you had a very interesting viola with one part of the c bout missing and the very tall ribs. Who is it made by?

  • its so nice good job

  • what type of chin rest do you use?

  • oh and by the way, you have a really sharp, clear-cut sound. As a soloist, youd be easily distinguished. Nice job

  • wait a minute, that's Juilliard, isn't it? Are you a student at Juilliard?

  • You, my friend, have a gorgeous sound.

  • I know what concerto I will be working on for next semester! :D the viola is awesome!

  • your viola looks small

  • wonderful performance!!!! congratulation!!!

  • So amazing!! I wish i could play half as well as you. You are amazing :D By far my favorite viola video on youtube.

  • AMAZING. And your body language is great. Very confident...which, if I played as well as you, I would be extremely confident also :) Perfect!!

  • Wow!

  • Bravo!! :-)

  • wonderful playing! I love the deep gorgeous sound your getting from your Riviola. Davids instruments are really amazing. I have the Pellegrina viola and just love it.

  • This sounds very gorgeous. may i ask what size of viola that is?? =]

  • qe molleejaaaaa :O

  • You are so awesome on this piece!!! I really want to learn it and you are such an inspiration to me. I have one question though. Do you have any tips on vibrato? I've been playing about half as long as you say you've been playing, and would love any advice on vibrato. I just can't seem to get it. :)

  • waw je ne connaissais pas ce morceau! j'espere que l'altiste en question continue toujours l'alto! en tout cas le morceau ainsi que sa prestation est manifique

  • Whoa man! Tasty playing, from the lyricism to the concerto passages! And the C string (and your control of it) is just monstrous!! If you tried to sell me the album, I'd buy it!

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • that is probably the thickest viola I've ever seen! You draw such a lovely tone from it!

  • yo matt good job. my bad with the camera work but i thought it was hilarious!

  • hey matt good job! My bad about zooming up to yo face but i think it's hilarious

  • hey matt good job.. I am sorry about the camera work but its hilarious. I had a fun time zooming up to yo FACE!

  • Is that Che Yen Chen turning your pages? It certainly looks like him

  • great cadenza performance, your viola has a beautiful tone continue with what you're doin, it works!

  • well done!

  • Congrats to your performance, it was really exceptional. Who is composer of this cadenza? Thank you for answer....

  • Bravo

  • I Like Your Viola How It Was Crafted With Out The Bottom Right Corner! Did That Have Anything To Do With The Bow cause That Viola Also Looks Very Thick In Rib Height And In Width Across The Lower Bout?

  • I really like how you play this concerto.

    Congratulations!

  • very nice iam mexican an play violin realy you play very well excelente

  • very beautiful!

  • One of the best Viola Players I ever heard..and the Concert is very nice..I never heard it before.

Wish you all the best and I am sure that you will have big future!

  • i want to play this!!!!!!!!

  • Very good! Bravo! Personaly, in the arpeggiati section I would consider giving the lower notes more meaning and in the upper notes less "screamming". Thank you for posting! =)

  • ummmm that was pretty amazing.

  • great performance!

my viola teacher actually just sent me this link XD

i'm learning this piece this semester, very helpful, thank you :D

  • Nice work man!

Really interesting as interpretation, work by Zelter is quite fine,"simple" but elegant!

    U've got a nice sound...and tecnique!;)

    bravo!

  • nice playing,, very well

  • Escelente performance...o garoto tem talento!!

  • Good Performance

  • you seem to be a fan of the open a string. if you fixed those with 3rd position or 4 finger more often the piece would sound at least 10% better. 9.5/10 though, pretty good job

  • i thing that open strings suite this style, being classical. it also works better in first possition withopen strings (just like haydn/mozart string quartets).

  • very good my friend

I'm playing this concerto now and I'm teaching of you !!!

  • very nice playing!

  • yourr very goodd =] ive been playying for 5 years butt dont sound tnearly as good as thiss . your sound is amazingg thoughh

  • !wow, congratulations you play realy good.Wished i could play like that.I noted you dropped you left hand often,is that make easier on some notes?

  • You make it look easy !

  • Excellent playing

  • vergaaa sii! ese camarografooo se mueve burda!!

  • This sounds great! I really want to play this one for my jury for fall semester. Great job!

  • This is awesome :D

What type of viola do you use?

  • i hated this song until i heard you play it i am playing it currently and i thought it sounded like an etude but you make me want to play it!

  • so cleanly executed!

    well done!

  • I played this for a jury, but slightly slower.

    THAT WAS AWESOME!

except for the piano getting cut off.

  • el camarografo tiene parkinson

  • oh i want to play like you someday!

    this is such an inspiration!

    how often do you practice?

  • Why thank you!! =)

It depends on my mood/current relationship with the viola...but when things are going well (meaning I don't want to throw up listening to myself play) I like to practice all day long...not that time permits that other than on vacations..but I pretty much practice as much as I can, be it an hour and a half or seven hours in a day. On average, probably 2-3 hours a day I would guess

  • Im applying to J-yard this fall as a viola transfer. Who do u study with??

  • that's awesome! when did u start playing viola if i may ask?

  • Well...I started playing violin when I was six, and switched to viola at eight...but I count it all together so 14 years I guess...wow didn't realize it was that long

  • wow that long. only started last year and im glad i passed the auditions for conservatory of music. im sorry to ask so many questions but how did you start practicing your vibratto?

  • that was really good!

Im a violist as well! And that is one of my favorite pieces to play!

  • you're pretty goood :D

what school do you go to?

  • woah your viola looks so weird! it's really thick.

  • haha i thought so too!

  • beautifully played! well done!

  • beautifully played! really enjoyed watching this! :)

  • anyone know at what age he started playing?

  • Nice to see more works played on the Viola. Sure wish all symphonies would have more guest viola soloists. This piece is no doubt written around the same time as the Stamitz??

  • Gorgeous:*

  • i love you for this

  • excellent

  • What an absolutely fantastic performance. Beautifully played. By the way, I noticed your viola has been rounded off on the lower bout - why is that? Do you have the same problem I do with the corner of the bout interfering with your bowing hand when playing at the frog on the A string?

  • I'm quoting the video poster's response from a previous post: "As to my viola, you have sharp eyes; it is an ergonomic viola by David Rivinus; I use it because I have struggled with injury problems since I was fifteen. I probably wouldn't be playing any more if I didn't have it."

  • Way to go on that fabulous cadenza! It's inspiring to see great performances, even with shaky cameras. Thank you.

  • this is pretty good i must say. Who do u study under?

  • Heidi Castleman. I heard from several people that she's amazing. Clearly, I mean all the people I know who she teaches are awesome. I mean she taught some of the current Juilliard Faculty for ____'s sake!!!

  • Yea, many of my viola friends studied under her. My mom studied under Dorothy Delay back in the day. God rest her soul.

I heard that Sam Rodes is also phenomenal. He's been the violist for the Juilliard String Quartet for like the last millenium. Lol But yes, Heidi Castleman is a G

  • So I'm auditioning to Juilliard in March on viola. Please tell me you are in at least your 3rd year or a grad student? If you're a freshman, you scare me. You are fantastic!

  • Bravo!

  • where are u from?

Good sound and intunation. And the rythm is perfect, those pieces are hard to keep the tempo with all those 16th.

    Nice Dude!

  • god you play beautifully. i want to learn to piece now!

  • 2:38-2:42... What a great shot of the page turner. Page turners often do not get the attention they deserve. They do have a most crucial part in the performance. Cohen rocks!

  • wow you play beautifully

i want to learn this piece now!

  • Beautiful!You have a lovely sound.

You are a student at Juilliard?

  • Surely your friend must have cut off the last note on purpose! lol Btw, I noticed your viola is a little smaller on the right side and is rounded out on the bottom part of the ribs, how does work for you?

  • Haha actually that was my fault; when I cut the whole concerto into movements somehow the last note got cut off although it wasn't when I tested it in the editing program. As to my viola, you have sharp eyes; it is an ergonomic viola by David Rivinus; I use it because I have struggled with injury problems since I was fifteen. I probably wouldn't be playing any more if I didn't have it.

  • Lol it's so unsettling. Luckily my high school teacher returned my cd of Hariolf Schlichtig so I've finally been able to listen to the Zelter. That's interesting, I figured you played on that type of viola because it gave you a technical advantage, not because you had to. It has a superb sound, how big is it? How does it help with your injury?

  • @mattriarch Oh and if I may ask where exactly do you get this piece? I like the cadenza, it seems very time I order a concerto I get a crappy cadenza.

  • get it Cohen!

  • Very good job! I didn't know this piece exists but I like it alot. I actually think it's more interesting than the Stamitz D Major! It's great that you aren't afraid to play your instrument and it shows, KUDOS!

  • I agree that it is more interesting than the Stamitz, it's my favorite classical concerto for viola.

  • too fast... but is GREATTTT!!!!

    =]

  • ..Well, as to that..the only professional recording I have/heard (by Hariolf Schlictig) does the same tempo...but thanks for the kudos!

  • Thanks! Yes I was; how'd you know?

  • I was a merit winner in viola and I just remember your name. Hey so I'm adding you on facebook. Haha.

  • This is great!

And weren't you a finalist in NFAA a year back or so?
