Overall, anime is ten times better...but I don't think that is a surprise to anyone since M Night took no effort to really study Michael Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko fabulous work! I hate this movie so much
I honestly don't care for the different ethnicity changes, what bothered me the most is the actual movie itself. It was way too short, in order to tell the epic story of the 3 books...you definitely need more time...like Lord of the Rings time. There was way too much exposition and completely cut out some story arcs and characters. Jet and his gang, Katara having to struggle to prove she was just as capable as any boy, etc.
This movie was just an insult to a really really awesome show. Seriously this was the only cartoon in the last 5 years that can compete with Animaniacs or the old Batman cartoon from the 90s. In fact I think this show might be able to beat them out.
This movie is literally nothing like the show he's so bad at adaptation that he couldn't even get the names right. And why is this movie portrayed to be so dark and shit? I mean the show gives off a completely different vibe of "Fun and adventurous" and the movie is just giving off this vibe of "The movie trying to be 300 but the director sucks dick cheese"

I think that a better director should remake the first one, then carry on with the rest. even though I did enjoy the movie, I think that its so rushed in the first half that all you really see is them flying to temples and you dont know why (well I do because I watched the animated version). so yah no offence to the director who made this but you kinda suck.

I went to see this movie not expecting it to be great but still decent. I was wrong. It was horrible. i spent the whole time talking with some guy i never met sitting next to me in the theater about how horrible it was while laughing at it. I also couldn't go 5 seconds without either laughing or being pissed off about their names. THAT was one of the things that took me out of the movie the most, besides the things listed by Mikesean45. Damn you M. Night. I hope you never make another movie.
If you have an actual show to go off of, your movie should've been SO much closer than it was! How can you screw it up when you have a clear cut of what it's supposed to be like right in front of you?!

I don't think we should give all the criticism direction to only M. Night, because, as a director, he has to follow the wants and needs of both his producers/crew AND the unforgiving Paramount pictures.
This comparison made me happy, however, because it shows that yes, there were similarities between the movie and the season. Yes there were, however bad the pronounciation, adaptation, and different nations seemed. M. Night fought for the actual pronounciation of the names against Paramount.
they should split the series into three big movies, so they can tell the whole story of 'Avatar the last airbender'!!!! Thumbs up if you think so!!!!!!
wow, its so similar! except, well, the one on the right has:
good acting, expressive characters, good writing, action sequences that dont need quotations around "action", pleasing visuals, good music, good directing, a cohesive plot, 3-dimensional characters, an actual mythos, character and story development, strong female characters, bright moments, a sky where you can actually see the sun, a sympathetic anti-villain, and a badass real villain. but otherwise its EXACTLY THE SAME!
M.Night failed to 'study' the actual story.Zuko's 16, not in his twenties [no offence but Zuko's FAIRER]. Katara & Sokka are tanned.Aang should be funnier.Fire Lord ozai's face wasn't seen until the 3rd season.Azula was fairer [i seriously h8 being a racist but its the fact] and you guys do knw that Ozai & Iroh r brothers rite? Ozai looked COMPLETELY difrent than Iroh [not to mention again, skin colour] wtf i respect the director's effort to adapt this to a movie, but he seriously ruined it :(

@frankie01 I know who she is and Suki is not a blonde, she was made a blonde for the movie because of a director obsession, which has been noted on M. Knight's profile because that's one of his major flaws as a director. He always changes small things that have a big impact on the entire movie, which is why he's being considered to be one of the most failing directors in the early 21st century, which is sad because his work in the 90s was excellent.

@hay326159487 Actually James Cameron had come up with the name "Avatar" 15 years ago, long before The Last Airbender was even being considered as a show. So technically James Cameron should sue The Last Airbender.

This movie was terrible. As I was watching it, I thought that the only way to redeem itself would be if Aang took the ocean spirit and went all avatar state like in the show. He didn't!!!! He didn't even see Ko! All my favorite scenes from my favorite episodes were removed. And I, personally, don't see why they just didn't cast the voices.

i think it will be good.. and how it looks like they stuck to the story line and the actions... but i think they could of did a better job finding a different zuko but who knwows i dont i havent even saw the movie yet so i cant judge
zuko does have a scar in the film, and if you know anything, fire scar fade ith time, it gets lighter, the film is solid, not perfect by any means, but far from horrible
@TheWarshire maybe a first degree burn might fade but zuko's was like a 3rd and that leavs a prtty dmn good scar for a long time and if you do not remember it in the show it wasn't that long ago that zuko actually received the burn and left to search for the avatar and no, the film WAS quite horrible.
@im2awesome2die Zuko does have a scar but it's so light and his skin color is so dark you can barely see it. This is one thing that annoyed me because the scar is Zuko. It's who he is and to have a scar like in the movie doesn't really show the damage that the cartoon does on his face. They should have covered Dev's whole eye with the burn instead of just the side. Also if his hair was like it was in the cartoon (stupid M. Night) it would have helped more too.
@ultimategamer96 The cartoon is amazing and critically-acclaimed. Try to forget the movie even exists if you can. If you thought the story (the basics anyway - 4 nations, war, last airbender) was interesting, then I definitely recommend checking out the show. It's much more complex. I read the comments on this movie, the plot was good, but the actors couldn't act worth a damn, the actors it said, had no personality. In my opinion the only successful Shymalan movie was Signs. They should've had another director for this beloved cartoon series. No offense to Shymalan, but he just has not recently been able to direct good movie anymore.
To be honest, if you're a hardcore Avatar fan, you probally won't like what he did with this movie. It's an awesome movie, but if you've seen every episode it could piss you off. (Happened with 3 of my friends, lol.)

Okay, I saw this movie, and I liked it. I think that the thing you have to do when you see it is put aside that it is a cartoon adaption and the cast (Namely Jackson, who in my opinion is a good actor and I'm not saying that cause I saw Twilight) the movie itself is good, and although it's a bit different from the movie the plot is the same and it still keeps the same heart. What you need to think about is "Does this still convay the message that Avatar was trying to say?" and to me, it's yes.

@Caps11wasProduction I think most of the problems of the movie stem from trying to fit too much into such a short time. The lack of character development, points where it diverge from essential points of the story, and just the overall way that the plot was unclear would really have benefited from about and extra 50 minutes. Even so, those people saying it doesnt follow the cartoon at all are ridiculous. Most of the scenes were close to something that happened on the show.
@BIGBMH Actually some aspects were changed. Important aspects from the show were changed. And the flow as well. many things were cut out from the show. And they were important to the development of the characters. The main thing that doesn't follow with the show is the fact aang is not funny, innocent, PLAYFUL, and can be serious. Instead, he was serious, boring, and depressed the whole time and in book one he was not at all. He did most of his playing in book one. barely any training.
@BIGBMH The feeling of anything and the tone and mood can change the whole work. And it did. So that is how it is not like the show. Majority of the settings shown had like one or two elements from the show. And that was how it was identifiable. It didn't give the full feel of the show. And it really could have. When he was training, they could have put the waterfall scene. Instead they put trees. At first I thought we were going to see Jet.

But he failed to tie it all together to make a good movie. There's McDonalds commercial that has better martial art and better airbending than the entire movie. ^_^
@k1988smith It doesn't completely follow the story. That's not what I'm saying. However, it's not as different as most people say it is. Even in a really good adaptation of the story, there would be things cut and changed because that's the nature of trying to condense a 20 episode season into a movie. What I'm saying is, the plot of this movie isn't that far away from the plot of a much better adaptation.
@BIGBMH well credit is not due here. THis is so bad that kids probably wouldnt like this movie. I would say it is about 90% (not including the differences of the cartoon and real people, of course.) The tatoos, well they didn't stand out, but it looked more asian. The fighting styles were done terribly, the show was smooth, effortless, it could have been done. UNG, totally different from the show. he was borig, sad and depressed and not fun. the 10% is main characters look & FEW of the settings

Other scences like the fire nation at the northern air temple and had the avatar statues. THat definitely did not happen. The statues were in the first temple they went to, southeren air, THe northern had the gliders.Then the fire nation had a fort in the air temple, which did not make sense. THey left the place walking on flat ground when the temple is on a steep mt.

My main point is that people, like yourself, are exagerrating when it comes to differences in the plot. Read the wikipedia plot synopsis. There aren't many things in there that you can say were not in the plot of the show.

@Trussory I fully agree on that. I think he did a good job capturing the look of the series. He should have gotten a better writer to do the screenplay and he should have gotten the people who worked on the bending/fight choreography from the show to help with that. As for book 2, I don't know if they'll get another chance after the way this bombed.
Lol I just went to the midnight showing and let me tell you, it won't matter how much of a fan you are, if you like the last airbender, there's something wrong with you. Well, it was actually very funny, like it was made by the Wayans bros. Me and my friends laughed so hard at how everything sucks in this movie!

It's not the video I dislike.....I think it's true, the scenes were very similar, but that has no real hand in the way the movie will treat the show. In fact, I'm very worried about this movie. The show was amazing, intricate and subtle at some points, comedic and fascinating at others. I just don't think this will do it any justice. There's just some things pure cartoon animation can pull off well. We'll see.

It's odd cuz no one sees Toph as pretty yet I've noticed in certain clip they tried to make her look cute. As well as Suki, Ty Lee, Mai and even Azula! XD Then there's Onji! I personally think they just wanted every character to look interesting. =]

M.Night failed to 'study' the actual story.Zuko's 16, not in his twenties [no offence but Zuko's FAIRER]. Katara & Sokka are tanned.Aang should be funnier.Fire Lord ozai's face wasn't seen until the 3rd season.Azula was fairer [i seriously h8 being a racist but its the fact] and you guys do knw that Ozai & Iroh r brothers rite? Ozai looked COMPLETELY difrent than Iroh [not to mention again, skin colour] wtf i respect the director's effort to adapt this to a movie, but he seriously ruined it :(

@frankie01 I know who she is and Suki is not a blonde, she was made a blonde for the movie because of a director obsession, which has been noted on M. Knight's profile because that's one of his major flaws as a director. He always changes small things that have a big impact on the entire movie, which is why he's being considered to be one of the most failing directors in the early 21st century, which is sad because his work in the 90s was excellent.

This movie was terrible. As I was watching it, I thought that the only way to redeem itself would be if Aang took the ocean spirit and went all avatar state like in the show. He didn't!!!! He didn't even see Ko! All my favorite scenes from my favorite episodes were removed. And I, personally, don't see why they just didn't cast the voices.
PS I do like how you found clips to match the trailer, I think the ones youfound fit.

zuko does have a scar in the film, and if you know anything, fire scar fade ith time, it gets lighter, the film is solid, not perfect by any means, but far from horrible

@TheWarshire maybe a first degree burn might fade but zuko's was like a 3rd and that leavs a prtty dmn good scar for a long time and if you do not remember it in the show it wasn't that long ago that zuko actually received the burn and left to search for the avatar and no, the film WAS quite horrible.

@im2awesome2die Zuko does have a scar but it's so light and his skin color is so dark you can barely see it. This is one thing that annoyed me because the scar is Zuko. It's who he is and to have a scar like in the movie doesn't really show the damage that the cartoon does on his face. They should have covered Dev's whole eye with the burn instead of just the side. Also if his hair was like it was in the cartoon (stupid M. Night) it would have helped more too.

@ultimategamer96 The cartoon is amazing and critically-acclaimed. Try to forget the movie even exists if you can. If you thought the story (the basics anyway - 4 nations, war, last airbender) was interesting, then I definitely recommend checking out the show. It's much more complex. I started re-watching the series immediately after I finished it.

I read the comments on this movie, the plot was good, but the actors couldn't act worth a damn, the actors it said, had no personality. In my opinion the only successful Shymalan movie was Signs. They should've had another director for this beloved cartoon series. No offense to Shymalan, but he just has not recently been able to direct good movie anymore.

Okay, I saw this movie, and I liked it. I think that the thing you have to do when you see it is put aside that it is a cartoon adaption and the cast (Namely Jackson, who in my opinion is a good actor and I'm not saying that cause I saw Twilight) the movie itself is good, and although it's a bit different from the movie the plot is the same and it still keeps the same heart. What you need to think about is "Does this still convay the message that Avatar was trying to say?" and to me, it's yes.

#2 the script sucked. nothing that made me laugh except maybe a little sokka but not as funny as the cartoon sokka. (nothing he said was funny just what he did) as opposed majority of what sokka did was funny.That could have been captured in the movie.

i saw this movie to day, it was about the worst movie i have ever seen! The movie did not follow the cartoon, at all! I wanted to walk out about half way through. The charecters are nothing like the cartoons, and everyone from the fire nation is iraki, because M. night is... Do not waste money on this, do not see it. I am i big fan of avatar but my god this was so horrible don't watch any of the avatar series unless a new directer comes, or if it is the cartoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Caps11wasProduction I think most of the problems of the movie stem from trying to fit too much into such a short time. The lack of character development, points where it diverge from essential points of the story, and just the overall way that the plot was unclear would really have benefited from about and extra 50 minutes. Even so, those people saying it doesnt follow the cartoon at all are ridiculous. Most of the scenes were close to something that happened on the show.

@BIGBMH Actually some aspects were changed. Important aspects from the show were changed. And the flow as well. many things were cut out from the show. And they were important to the development of the characters. The main thing that doesn't follow with the show is the fact aang is not funny, innocent, PLAYFUL, and can be serious. Instead, he was serious, boring, and depressed the whole time and in book one he was not at all. He did most of his playing in book one. barely any training.

@BIGBMH The feeling of anything and the tone and mood can change the whole work. And it did. So that is how it is not like the show. Majority of the settings shown had like one or two elements from the show. And that was how it was identifiable. It didn't give the full feel of the show. And it really could have. When he was training, they could have put the waterfall scene. Instead they put trees. At first I thought we were going to see Jet.

My main point is that I've seen much worse and that people don't give it credit where it's due. Fans are saying things like "It's completely different" and "It doesn't follow the story at all" when this is simply untrue.

@BIGBMH Having visuals that are the same and actually following a story is different. It's great that he got a couple things to look like the show. But he failed to tie it all together to make a good movie. There's McDonalds commercial that has better martial art and better airbending than the entire movie. ^_^

@k1988smith It doesn't completely follow the story. That's not what I'm saying. However, it's not as different as most people say it is. Even in a really good adaptation of the story, there would be things cut and changed because that's the nature of trying to condense a 20 episode season into a movie. What I'm saying is, the plot of this movie isn't that far away from the plot of a much better adaptation.

@BIGBMH well credit is not due here. THis is so bad that kids probably wouldnt like this movie. I would say it is about 90% (not including the differences of the cartoon and real people, of course.) The tatoos, well they didn't stand out, but it looked more asian. The fighting styles were done terribly, the show was smooth, effortless, it could have been done. UNG, totally different from the show. he was borig, sad and depressed and not fun. the 10% is main characters look & FEW of the settings

Other scences like the fire nation at the northern air temple and had the avatar statues. THat definitely did not happen. The statues were in the first temple they went to, southeren air, THe northern had the gliders.Then the fire nation had a fort in the air temple, which did not make sense. THey left the place walking on flat ground when the temple is on a steep mt.

My main point is that people, like yourself, are exagerrating when it comes to differences in the plot. Read the wikipedia plot synopsis. There aren't many things in there that you can say were not in the plot of the show.

But no, I see what you're saying, and you're right. Shyamalan is just a terrible writer, that's all there is to it. I believe there's still hope for Book 2 if he swallows his pride and hires a co-writer to assist him when writing the screenplay.

@Trussory I fully agree on that. I think he did a good job capturing the look of the series. He should have gotten a better writer to do the screenplay and he should have gotten the people who worked on the bending/fight choreography from the show to help with that. As for book 2, I don't know if they'll get another chance after the way this bombed.

It's not the video I dislike.....I think it's true, the scenes were very similar, but that has no real hand in the way the movie will treat the show. In fact, I'm very worried about this movie. The show was amazing, intricate and subtle at some points, comedic and fascinating at others. I just don't think this will do it any justice. There's just some things pure cartoon animation can pull off well. We'll see.
