I played this piece when I was 17 but not properly. I'm ashamed to say I bluffed it. Now I am currently learning it properly and can appreciate how difficult it is, especially the semi-quavers against triplets at the end. This is a spot-on performance! Fantastic playing! I always think though that one's favourite recording is usually the first one you hear, and the one you judge all others on, and for me it's Noel Rawsthorne playing it at the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool on 8' solo Tuba Magna
All your recordings are absolutely amazing. I dont think I have ever been so mesmerized watching someone play. Most organist never show you the pedal action, and the pedal action what I have always enjoyed watching most. I dont think I have ever, in my life, seen someone with hands as nice as yours....
Sounds like the Cavaille-Coll in the Basilica of St Sernin, Toulouse!! Lovely sound and supreme playing. I've heard many electronic organs and this one just carries all before it! Love to have this set-up in my house.
Beautifully played...reminds me so much of attending Mass as a child at Notre-Dame de Saint-Omer. The Cavaille-Coll used to make my hair stand on end with joy then. This does too. Thank you so much!
I'd like to hear a little more sassy approach to this piece (in the phrasing and dynamic changes; calling out various voices via different manuals) - it is a very fiery work but as in all your videos, your playing is very musical and very competent.
Is this the organ that Diane Bish played on Joy of Music when she visited Budapest? She played this really great Toccata by a composer Bednard, or I think that was his name.
where did you purchace the Manuels and pedal board from? I ask because I am ordering the newest version of Hauptwerk and need the keyboards to play anything on! =]
well depends. How many keyboards you want. What kind of computer you want/ need. Speakers, what sample set.
Lots play roll into what the total cost will be.
It can get pricy. But not nearly as pricey as even the smallest of digital organs.
So really you save tones but never ever lose anything. You can have 20 different historical organs at your fingertips. Try doing that with an allen or rodgers.
Now having an organ with midi will take a major chunk of price out.
You could also buy 2 or 3+ midi set up keyboards for in total around $100 or so. Then buy a pedal board from an old electronic organ and get a midi kit for them. Hook it all up to the computer.
Buy the software from HW or there are free ones out there like Jorgan or Miditzer (theatre organ tho)
Great Performance. Also the Hauptwerk software is very impressive. The voices sound more convincing than anything Rodgers or Allen digitals could ever put out. Makes me wonder why no one has thought about using Hauptwerk in a digital organ installation at a church or concert hall?
Stunning video - especially in HD. It took me the longest time to register just what I was hearing & looking at - the term 'virtual organ' is new to me. Absolutely impressive playing.
How do you get all the viewing locations with one camera while you are playing ? Do you make the audio recording first then play along with the music for the video parts ?
I have a 1993 Gothic recording of Douglas Major playing this in the Washington National Cathedral, and yours is nearly as thrilling! I am very impressed!
I'm not sure I would say that. Rob, you have a flare and fire in your playing that I seldom seem to hear much. Many play but few play with what I hear in your recordings. As for the Mulet, the voicing is different than the WNC. I would say your registration is clearer. This may be just a difference between an EM Skinner and the Budapest instrument. The WNC instrument is unique, one of a kind. Sadly, it is in very grave danger of being replaced.
Thanks John, the Budapest instrument has a unique sound (for better or for worse) and it definitely took some experimentation to find what worked best as a Cavaille-Coll kind of sound. It would indeed be very sad to see (another) EM Skinner instrument bite the dust.
Hello Rob, What can I say that hasn't been said already? I watch A LOT of organists perform on YouTube. None moves me more than you! It's the playing (hands, fingers, position, expression, registration) and the videography and the Hauptwerk instrument all put together! Thank You! Thank You! Joe in Minnesota
Rob, another fantastic faultless performance. I was recording at the organ of Chester Cathedral, UK last week and over four hours recording nothing as good or faultless as this. Well done.
Tell me, I see your pistons now have writing on them. Are these a piston upgrade from midiworks or stickers?
Dymo label maker from Office Max (or Office Depot, can't remember). :D
Making organ recordings is one of the most frustrating things I've experienced. In the interest of being as well prepared for an upcoming audition as possible, I have so far insisted making a recordings that are 100% live. I'd say it's pretty good practice for performing. When I have a recording that is going well, my heart starts racing in a very familiar way when I near the end of the piece.
For me, there have been a few times I wished I was a mouse in the corner when great music was played and saved for all to appreciate. Most notable to me was when George Wright recorded the Fox Theatre recordings in 1956. Thanks to technology and one with prodigious talents, we have Rob who shines a light for all to see, making timeless the music which he shines such a bright light on! Thanks for ALL your postings and the talents of your wife for its capture.
Just stunning. I am 31, legally blind (so all has to be learning by ear) and I think I seriously want to pro-sue going an organist. You sure are inspiring.
I got it at Best Buy while they were having a pretty good sale. But you're right, it was "a few notes" :-) I have gotten some good use out of it though (even extending beyond my YouTube videos!)

Wonderful, I totally agree with you recording can be a frustrating experience, well done on this marvelous accomplishment. Thank you, Graham
