  • can someone send me a link to where i can find this Polyethylene Foam?

  • you can beat multiple attackers with jiu jitsu? didn't know that. they should show how to do that

  • @josh1212121 Rickson has demonstrated this over the years many times but in all honesty it's more like "escaping" multiple attackers which is fine with me. I just want to survive. I also watched certified GJJ instructor John Crouch, demonstrate an ability to shrug off and walk away from two police officers that were trying to subdue him. This was in a L.E. training situation of course but impressive nonetheless.

  • 1 Cuntbag got whooped by a Gracie Martial Artist.

  • 100% BOOM :)

  • yep your right bout the matts, some guy broke his pinky toe between the matt at my place lol

  • Is this mat system good for stand up arts as well? I can see how the firmness is good for the footing and the padding is good for landing but, is it to slick (slippery) for a stand up stlye?

  • @nickbosin nah. as long as you're not running around with socks on it, you won't be slipping. bare feet or wrestling shoes have plenty of traction.

  • @nickbosin Judo is a part of BJJ so the answer would be a firm yes.

  • Are these home made mats good to throw people on (judo)?

  • I thought Helio's favorite color was blue!

  • dude this guy is awesome....man i wish i could train with him!!!!

  • @chavamma

    Silly white belt

  • 5:34 creeper in the back lol

  • "you have enough stress to worry about when you're getting punched... in the face."

  • wouldnt it hurt if you were to get taken down on that matt since theres hard industrial carpet under? And if not, when you dont have the vinyl on it, wouldnt it be a soft area where you wouldnt be able to put anything down on top of it since it would be unstable?

  • We used this set up for our mat area and it looks and feels great.Plus it's way cheaper than buying mats online. One question though,..How,or what, do you use to keep the carpet in place? I know edges are tacked down around the 2x4's,but what about along the seams in the middle of the mat area? Do you use some type of adhesive? Thanks.

  • @pistolwhip502 Good question about the carpet joins (not carpet padding).

  • 100%

  • hey brother, who did u get ur polyethylene foam from? I'm having a hard time finding it 1 inch thick in any substantial measurements

  • Now what about grip ? A tarp would make things very slippery once it gets sweaty ! Is there a certain type oftarp one can useto ensure a stable grip ie feet hands knees ??

  • 5:34 PEEK-A-BOO! lol

  • I actually made my own mats. I used a miter saw to cut angles on some 2x4's, then used 2 L-brackets at each corner to connect them together. Then I got some Gold's Gym puzzle mats from Walmart (got 36 mats, so 12x12 space) and put them inside of the frame and duct taped them. Then I got some 1 inch thick rebond foam and put that in the frame and duct taped it together. Then I just placed a thick tarp over the frame and stapled it to the bottom side of the 2x4. Works great!

  • Rener. Where did you buy the Polyethylene foam - 2lb eva? It seems pretty expensive. Just wondering if you can recommend a place or maybe even get us a discount if we mention GJJ.

  • Hey Rener. Awsome video bro. Just one question- Are u sure you need to use EVA foam and not just regular polyethylene??? Because EVA is much more expensive and the foam company told me most martial arts places use regular polyethylene. Thanks a lot for the help Rener!!!

  • I loved when Rener rolled out the mat and said, "BOOM! Let's grapple bros!" Hahaha. Rener's so funny. You're awesome, Rener!

  • Where the hell do I get the polyethylene foam? Does anybody know a site or place where I can buy that stuff?

  • theres a sneaky ninja spying at 5:33

  • Does anyone have experience building mats like Rener does here? What do you think? Any learning points? I do have a couple of questions (hopefully Rener can jump in here): 1) Do you glue the foam to the carpet pad and/or the carpet to the foam? 2) I notice that there is a bit of gathering of the vinyl. This slack does not cause any problems? 3) If you do not glue any of the items as in question #1, does the unit shift, gather, etc.? Thanks!

  • the thing with the pinky toe between the puzzle mats happenet to me :) my pinkytoe was broken off i na 90 degree angle :)

  • How bout the portable ones? where do i get those? and how much?

  • can you guys make wall pads, too.

  • :)

  • Lets Grapple bros!!!!!

  • Rener I only have one thing to say... ONE HUNDRED PERCENT

  • Rener, what density is the Polyethylene foam brother

  • I just bought the mats from you guys yesterday and I was wondering what's the best way to clean the portable mats that you guys sell?

  • so excited to start jiu-jitsu!

i've only been able to watch your free videos on youtube :/

have to wait till i can get a job to afford to get into a class

  • the price was reasonable when they were on sale. almost bought them at $212. then the pricing was $160!

You're into Dollamur range at that price.

  • funny thing is as far as science goes green is the harshest color on the eyes... just sayin looks good though

  • haha, you're silly bro. great sense of humor. I've been turning my garage into a gym bit by bit. thanks for this vid

  • dude! i went and got all the stuff he said to get and it cost 480bucs 4 just a 10x10 sucks im never gunna get my own mats...gaaaaay!!!!

  • is that ryron hiding behind the mats at 5:34

  • Anyone have any experience with the Home Mats yet? I'd love to hear some feedback on them. We are thinking about picking some up to review online.

  • i want to buy two but they're so expensive

  • Wow.....I have built two mats myself at different times and both times I used carpet padding. Interesting that I was doing the same thing as you all without even knowing.

  • Dude, you guys are good people. Thank you for this wonderful gift of sharing your life lesson with us.

  • Excellent post- been waiting years for this one! NOTE to those building these mats in your garage... If you have a bare concrete floor, be sure to put a plastic sheet or tarp down first (between the concrete & the carpet padding). The plastic sheet or tarp prevents moisture from the concrete from getting the padding all mildewed. Now if they show us how to make PORTABLE homemade / DIY mats, I'd be in jiu-jitsu heaven!

  • love Rener but hate how he talks to the camera like we are all 10yrs old.

  • Who was behind the wall panel?

  • Rener you deserve your own show ASAP. Lets grapple bros!

  • gracie jiu jitsu 4ever!

  • Love the videos! 100%!

  • thank you guys for that been wondering about that for a while nice of you to share!

    you guys rock!

  • Rener, you are the man. I love it.....What next. Is setting up a larger mat area like you guys have done less expensive than the way we did at Ft. Eustis in the Army fight house with Zebra mats?

  • he's a very good spoke person =] lol

  • Spy behind wall padding at 5:34

  • guess what? keep it real, 100 percent...

  • @TheGSRyan

Thanks. My Judo Dojo has a platform of plywood, supported by 2X4's and, tires underneath. These type of mats would be great on top. We currently have a hodge podge of old wrestling mats, foam and, who knows what else underneath our tarp and, this would seem to give us an even surface.

  • having trouble finding a good supplier of foam. any suggestions?

  • @libertyhound99 2 places I go to

mcmaster carr (great eva foam, some of the best quality i have used.

cheap cheap alternative, walmart camping mats (the blue 3/8s inch thick stuff)

  • I'm gonna turn my living room into a gracie garage and then check with my wife if thats ok (I think she'll be alright with it!)

  • I dislocated my right pinky toe because it got stuck in a crack hahaha no joke

  • thanks for sharing

  • 100 percent !

  • 6:59 his face

  • How well do these mats protect you from hard Judo throws, or hard wrestling take down, or slams?

  • cool video

  • Love the Gracies.. :)

  • Dude! You didn't get up in base!!! Keep it real.

  • i might buy it

  • Great video. Thanks for sharing.

  • I love this guy, he makes everything seem so cool and interesting. Screw it, I'm going to a Gracie Academy.

  • perfect salesman.

  • Boom! Let's grapple bros!

  • Rener could talk about grass growing and I would be listening intently!

  • @Fupper16 nature 100% lol.

  • I think "you'll learn that at black belt" is

code for "don't ask stupid questions"

  • @lsloewen2 so true but still you can't go there for self defense so lol

  • @lsloewen2 It's actually "dont try to run before you crawl" it's mostly new students that are the bully type that want to ask every question that they'll eventually learn.

  • I wonder how they clean them i would imagine they use somewhat strong stuff to kill the bacteria.

  • @Tony007corp bleach mostly, at least where i train

  • Spare no expense

  • The first thing I noticed when I watched my first Gracie Academy video was the pristine, seamless, green mat. It's cool to hear how they made it from scratch! I agree that the green color really makes the space more chill, which probably makes it easier for students to focus and absorb the lessons. Though I could swear you said Helio's favorite color was blue in the How to Tie the Belt video :P hehe

  • If I take my basement, get the carpet and get the Gracie special, and throw a part, do you promise that you and your brothers will come?

  • this was an awesome video. Thanks, that's keeping it real.

  • thanks again for spreading the word! this is a simple way but if you don't get the idea ... you'll be lost.

  • THANK YOU so much for this post.

  • keep it real

  • I guess for my mom's birthday, I can offer to re-do the flooring of our upstairs bedrooms...just imagine three bedrooms with green vinyl tarp wall-to-wall and a Gracie Academy sticker at the entrance...BAM!!! I'll make sure we all keep it real!!

  • Rener, watch out for the ninja at 5:33. Lol. Thanks for the info.

  • Rener, watch out for the ninja at 5:33. Lol. Thanks for the info.

  • I thought you said blue was Helio's favourite colour?

  • Those puzzle mats are dangerous. My friend got his big toe stuck in one during rolling and the big toe got ripped laterally away from his other toes which made a massive wound and damaged all the ligaments in his big toe so he had to get micro surgery to get it fixed.

  • I stand up in base when I get out of bed.

  • I wonder how Roger Gracie and Rener Gracie are related. Cousins, third cousins, Brothers? Roger Gracie has a killer mount game if you will.

  • @kanguesso Roger and Rener are second cousins. Roger's mom Reila and Rener's dad Rorion are first cousins. Roger's father is Mauricio Motta Gomes.

  • @barrettokarate Thanks dude.

  • Track Fu is the best way to defeat multiple attackers. Parkour helps too

  • "LET'S GRAPPLE BROS!"

  • How did you do the portable Gracie mats?

  • Good stuff sir!

  • niiiice!

  • rener stands up in base even at the end of the video :)

  • man that shogun vs jones fight was crazy

  • Rener, how can I order some of those?

  • @JdawgMMAblog Just go to the Gracie Academy website's online store.

  • @JdawgMMAblog The link is in the description.

  • @GracieAcademy thank you!!! can I get a deal? =)

  • 10 4 10 4 we have a mat situation in progress.. all units reporting in.

  • Rener can make anything interesting. Seriously.

  • "BOOM! Let's grapple, bros!" Hahah.

Rener, you're awesome! I love your videos! Very well articulated!

  • How do defeat multiple attackers: run.

If you take someone to the ground, your head becomes a soccer ball :(

  • Muito obrigado

  • I would like to remind anyone, who is gonna build a permanent mat, that if your gym has windows, you should take thermal expansion into account. That is if you install your mats tightly on a cold day, on some sunny day the mats might start bulging.

  • That foam is not cheap!

  • i got ringworm in jiu jitsu >: (

maybe they should have watched this video

  • Thank you for this Rener! This will save us a lot of money down the road when I open up my CTC.

  • Rener, I am curious of how mats were constructed in Brasilia during the infancy of GJJ? I heard mats were made from old tires. Can you confirm?

  • if you came to my house id rather i make the juice since you would be the guest

  • This gives me an awsome idea of how to make a good mat that will last ive made something like this before but they end up falling apart and foam puzzle mats slide apart

    Thank you for posting this

    beleive me it halpeed.

  • where can i find the postery covers online for the wall mats?

  • Wow, lots of knowledge dropped in that video. Thanks!!

  • Can you use those foldable ones for wrestling?

  • Can these mats be rolled?

  • ive been waiting for a video like this for nearly 2 years, thanks so much rener!

    U.K George

  • My quesiton is where can we get the Gracie Blue Gi that Ryron wears

  • Rener is so articulate and always great to listen to. He could make anything interesting with his enthusiasm.

  • Question, why does he pronounce it Hener when it's spelt rener, sorry I'm just curious

  • @PhunkieProdiG Because they speak Portuguese as they are from Brazil. In Portuguese Rs are pronounced as Hs. No need to apologize :)

  • @PhunkieProdiG Portuguese pronunciation. Just like in Spanish Jesus is pronounced Hesus.

  • @PhunkieProdiG Because he pronounce like a Brazilian, and in Portuguese language the "R" sounds like "H". I hope you understand my poor English, Greetings from Argentina.

  • Saw a kids toe come clean off at a BJJ tournament when his toe got caught between the puzzle mats as he got taken down....

  • watermelon juice...YES!!!

  • Haha he says "Hands on deck" haha, thats some Marine stuff right there haha.

  • This great stuff.

  • I wonder who it was that was playing pick a boo @ 5:30

  • Nice Gracie Jiu-Jitsu grappling mat! That looks sick! Rener + Ryron what would you guys say is the most essential, most important thing remember when starting Jiu-Jitsu as a beginner?

  • cool mats.

  • yeah

  • gracies are always first -_-"

  • First.

  • @GracieAcademy You guys freaking rock

  • @GracieAcademy This was the only "first" I've ever thought was funny. Normally it is appalling...but, this preemptive strike; awesome! Very well done.

Rener's attention to detail is insane. He is such a good teacher, and very charismatic. I wish could learn Jiu-jitsu from him! These videos are fantastic.

  • @GracieAcademy Do you get mat burn at Gracie Academy?

  • @GracieAcademy I'm 100%, ready for action, hehehe. dios los bendiga. good luck
