JJ Lehto is one of my favorite sports car racers of all time. Such a good personality, and such skill. He's won Le Mans in a Mclaren F1 and the R8, won something close to 15 ALMS races with the Champion Audi ream and his equally awesome teammate Johnny Herbert, and he's Finnish.
jj lehto was a hell of a driver in the r8 and he most rightly deserved his '05 win in it. i have a picture of him during a pit stop at portland in 2004 and he autographed it for me in 2005!
I always liked watching JJ on the in-car. Under braking he compresses down! I have the wrecked nose from him trying to go three wide on the first lap of the '05 Road Atlanta race. Tore it UP!
Worn tires, trying to get past someone who is definately slower. JJ gets very fustrated and loses speed. He is a second faster in the 2-3Q of the lap than the guy in front of him. Still, no can do when things are not going in the way you want them to.
"German domination" is no coincidence but the result of precission and superior enginering! Audi is likely to take another victory at le mans this year.
how does the gearshift on the r8 work? he seems to be like twisting something on the upshifts (unfortunatly you cant see his left hand for the downshifts) i presumed it would be a standard paddle shift, not unless its just jj being really enthusiastic with the shifts?
it is a regular paddle and it is just his style of doing it. many drivers do it similarly. racing drivers are superstitious and maybe doing it aggressively like that makes them feel faster :)
Or maybe these particular paddles need a certain ammount of pressure to be activated properly (which is somewhat logical, because we don't need misshifts due to over sensitive paddles, eh?). :)

Could someone explain to me exactly what happens in the beginning? Was JJ just upset that he hit the dudes car, or was it some sort of out-of-line defensive manuever that he was pissed off about? Also, what exactly is meant by opposite lock? He really looks like he's struggling with the wheel on those first few turns...Is that from worn tires?
If it's battle for a position then I don't know, but if it's a car that is going to get lapped, then waving is definitely for "stupid defensive move".
Opposite lock is same as counter-steering, turning the wheel to the opposite direction, to correct oversteer etc.
Could be worn tyres, especially when R8 never had traction control - unlike all cars now, so boring :(
To be clear: opposite lock is actually when you have reached the limit of counter steer, when there is no more travel left in the wheel (or your forearms are crossed and together so no further travel is possible). At that point the use of the throttle to control the yaw is all you have left . Think "drifting".
gotta love jj and his hand gestures. Too bad he couldn't continue in the alms he was always exciting. Do you have the video from Portland where JJ has that magnificent battle with Chris Dyson?
He was planning to make comeback with CET Solaroli Racing and Johnny Herbert. I guess the plan still exists. They even got a brand new RS Spyder in the garage.
I think it's from '04 actually. In the '04 event, Letho's R8 carried the onboard camera(in '05, it was Biela/Pirro), and this car is missing the little shoud for a rearward facing camera that Audi started to use in '05.
JJ a lil pissed about being clearly faster : )

Commentator for F1 broadcasts.
He drove couple of races in the ridiculous Speedcar Series.
I guess the CET Solaroli team will never materialize, there actually was a plan to race in ALMS with RS Spyder but nothing has happened since 2007...
