I am considering buying this laptop but when i checked online for its battery life, a whole bunch of numbers. So, whats the battery life on your version of it?
I want to get this for college in 2 years, im going to be majoring in Architectural design, do you think they'll come out with a new Envy 15 by fall 2013?
@CeleronicProductions there are slight possibilities that HP will slip in little changes but they wouldn't announce big changes or launches for probably a year or two.
Fantastic review, as always! I'm looking to purchase this laptop, and am really excited for it. I'm wondering though, how is the hinge? My previous HP's hinge became very weak and wobbly (it was plastic however). Also, does this laptop feel sturdy and built to last? For anyone getting laptop I'd really recommend getting a the radiance display vs the regular one. The bump in resolution, I think, it alone worth it. But it being an IPS panel also will make everything look beautiful from a much wider viewing angle also.

@jocamp5 I've only had one Apple laptop. I think the OS is pretty good but I ended up going back to Windows. Between most programs not have a OS X counterpart and the insane price for the hardware it is just not worth it. I tried configuring a 15" Sager vs a 15" MBP and they were identical except the Sager had better GPU and screen resolution and the MBP was $1000 more. Viruses are on the user. OS X can get a virus just as easy with the exception that there are less out there for OS X.

I think if you're less into computers Windows is fine but OS X is made to be simpler and easier to use. I do think both operating systems are great though. Great review! I am disappointed that laptop makers aren't putting in Bluray players for the standard drive. Many people have kids and those kids need entertained. And with my Disney movies on Bluray what am I suppose to do? Come on laptop companies!

There is one thing to say. Hp webcams don't stay together well. I got a pavilion and after one month the camera don't work. And many people have reported this ( I got my laptop for christmas

Thanks Lisa for an excellent review very helpful bought one, ENVY 15-3040nr to be exact. I did compare my MacBook Pro screen and the ENVY one and yeah the reds are slightly orangy on the ENVY but no bother at all. All in all it's a great machine for the price, I use it more than my Mac. :P

I have a quick question. On Newegg, I can buy the Envy 17 (not late model) edition for the same price as the Envy 15 late model with borderline identicle processor specs, DIMMS, HD configuration, the works. I'll admit, I'm a tax return splurger and like the aesthetic design of the previous model (laser etchings are sexy, admit it).
Is there any actual benefit to the later model? I'm not so computer savy but from the looks of it, the two, spec wise, look identical. Except the prev. model is 17''

I've owned 2 HP laptops before. They both suffer with overheating and loud fan noise. Does HP envy 15 too suffer with loud fan noise and over heating?
@sandeshpaudel no. even if it does, hp developed this new program called hp coolsense. you can adjust the fan from cool, quiet, and performance optimized. my hp never becomes noisy unless i do some gaming.
I actually added some Beats by Dre Pro Ltd Ed. head phones to it also, and wow! Playing FLAC through this laptop via those headphones is just mind blowing!!
Just got myself one of these yesterday, and am absolutely thrilled with it. The size is perfect. 17 inch laptops were too big, and few had the style of the HP Envy. So yeah, totally chuffed! :D
Hi Lisa! I'm lookin into buying a laptop for university. I'm deciding between this and the higher end Macbook pro 13. I've done extensive research on the HP ENVY 15 and have come across with complaints regarding the IPS display and its ability to correctly show reds and violets. As a future architecture student, I'll b using autocad and photoshop so colour representation is important! I'm also an occasional gamer so a decent graphics card would be a big plus! Which laptop would you recommend?
@jameslee1607 The Envy 15 is seriously more powerful than the 13" MacBook Pro. You'd really have to look at the 15" MacBook Pro for comparable performance.
The reds are too warm on the Envy, but not seriously out of whack on our unit. The Mac display is better for color accuracy after you calibrate it (it's generally too cool out of the box for all colors). If color accuracy is paramount, notebook panels generally won't cut it and you might want to get a good quality IPS monitor.
I was really looking at the Chronos 7 for a long time because of its performace and portability but the hp envy comes with more features for the same price and its upgradable to 16gb ram! downside is that its a bit bigger and heavier! lol so can i get suggestions?

@SmokenRocker The Chronos lasts us 30 minutes longer on a charge vs. the Envy 15. We'll be posting a smackdown between the Samsung and HP later today :)

Has an amazing keyboard is slimmer,looks nice and is more portable.Yes,it doesn't have the ips screen,it doesn't have 1080p screen but it's a BIG screen and very lightfull ..In terms of perf. the samsung is reallh good,envy is a bit better tough.So if you want a desktop replacement that is portable,and loooooka a,get the Samsung.
Well...this looks as an mbp on the inside...but the rest is envyish.Great performance...The HP has a lil' bit better graphics and a lil moar ram so idk if that makes very big differnece in gaming.On the other side,Chronos
..I can't stand how companies like HP are mimicking the apple style of design, if I wanted a laptop that looks like a macbook I would get one. This makes HP look like a chinese company selling clones of products. HP can build some sexy laptops or come up with some new styles but they won't by mimicking apple.
@JC5301 The Macbooks are designed and made by Quanta (one of the biggest Original Design Manufacturers of laptops). Quanta also designs and makes most of HP's laptops. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if the same people who designed the MBPs also designed these HPs.
My hunch is this is the reason Apple hasn't sued HP nor Dell for making Mac-like laptops (Dell also uses Quanta for some of their laptops).
I have an year old pavilion DV6 with the same ATI catalyst control panel. You can actually configure hotkeys to quickly switch between graphic cards. I have ctrl+shit+G for the high end graph card and ctrl+shift+H for low end card. Makes it a littlebit more easy to switch easy
I don't understand why everything has to be compared to Apple. You are not only detracting from HP's design, but Apple's as well. Just because a laptop is made of aluminum doesn't mean it stole the MacBook's "look". It simply means aluminum is a good material aesthetically and physically for computers, which it clearly is. HP would be stealing Apple's design if it was a uni-body, proprietary, and had a glowing apple on the front. The ENVY-- does not.
@LustX The USB port can charge a smartphone or other rechargeable device that connects over USB even if the notebook is off with sleep and charge USB.
You really should open up Paint, and put up a 1080p fullscreen of 255,0,0 Red, on both the Envy and another screen simultaneously, to show how red or orange the screen your model has actually is. The ones I've done this with are not even remotely red.
This side by side comparison is the only way to truly test the color accuracy. It would be much appreciated if you could set up this test environment then upload a video of it.
@killerra I have opened a pure red doc in Photoshop CS 5 on the Envy, a color calibrated Mac running the 30" Cinema Display (great color gamut) and the Samsung Series 7 Chronos. On our unit, the red is warmer than it should be but not terribly so. Red still looks like a warm red rather than orange.

I actually added some Beats by Dre Pro Ltd Ed. head phones to it also, and wow! Playing FLAC through this laptop via those headphones is just mind blowing!!

Just got myself one of these yesterday, and am absolutely thrilled with it. The size is perfect. 17 inch laptops were too big, and few had the style of the HP Envy. So yeah, totally chuffed! :D

Hi Lisa! I'm lookin into buying a laptop for university. I'm deciding between this and the higher end Macbook pro 13. I've done extensive research on the HP ENVY 15 and have come across with complaints regarding the IPS display and its ability to correctly show reds and violets. As a future architecture student, I'll b using autocad and photoshop so colour representation is important! I'm also an occasional gamer so a decent graphics card would be a big plus! Which laptop would you recommend?

@jameslee1607 The Envy 15 is seriously more powerful than the 13" MacBook Pro. You'd really have to look at the 15" MacBook Pro for comparable performance.
The reds are too warm on the Envy, but not seriously out of whack on our unit. The Mac display is better for color accuracy after you calibrate it (it's generally too cool out of the box for all colors). If color accuracy is paramount, notebook panels generally won't cut it and you might want to get a good quality IPS monitor.

I was really looking at the Chronos 7 for a long time because of its performace and portability but the hp envy comes with more features for the same price and its upgradable to 16gb ram! downside is that its a bit bigger and heavier! lol so can i get suggestions?

@JRFvids The weight difference between the Envy and Chronos is only a matter of ounces and the thickness difference isn't huge at 0.9 vs. 1.1 inches.

ah! I cant decide! between chronos 7 vs this HP envy! lol sorry just in same boat as everyone! Really i do everything on a laptop and im a computer science major in college so i wanna be able to do everything i do on my comp on the go or in the library. (Photoediting LR/Photoshop,Games,web design, Programing, basically to multitask with these tasks) right now i have a outdated 7.7lbs laptop HP dv9608nr to be exact and its not really cutting it as far as portability and performance.

thanks for reviewing my top two laptops (the other is Samsung Series 7 Chronos) ..im really reviewing them everyday..
but i have a question..comparing the Battery life between the ENVY and Chronos..which one last longer?? and i only use it for watching movies and like that..
also as far as screen goes..u said the ENVY looks good but the chronos is 300nit and envy is 250 i guess..which one is better for watchin movies?? thank u so much in advance and god bless..keep up the great work

Has an amazing keyboard is slimmer,looks nice and is more portable.Yes,it doesn't have the ips screen,it doesn't have 1080p screen but it's a BIG screen and very lightfull ..In terms of perf. the samsung is reallh good,envy is a bit better tough.So if you want a desktop replacement that is portable,and loooooka a,get the Samsung.

Well...this looks as an mbp on the inside...but the rest is envyish.Great performance...The HP has a lil' bit better graphics and a lil moar ram so idk if that makes very big differnece in gaming.On the other side,Chronos

..I can't stand how companies like HP are mimicking the apple style of design, if I wanted a laptop that looks like a macbook I would get one. This makes HP look like a chinese company selling clones of products. HP can build some sexy laptops or come up with some new styles but they won't by mimicking apple.

@JC5301 The Macbooks are designed and made by Quanta (one of the biggest Original Design Manufacturers of laptops). Quanta also designs and makes most of HP's laptops. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if the same people who designed the MBPs also designed these HPs.
My hunch is this is the reason Apple hasn't sued HP nor Dell for making Mac-like laptops (Dell also uses Quanta for some of their laptops).

@Henrythegame It doesn't overheat, in fact it stays relatively cool (CPU and GPU temps) even when gaming using dedicated graphics.

I have an year old pavilion DV6 with the same ATI catalyst control panel. You can actually configure hotkeys to quickly switch between graphic cards. I have ctrl+shit+G for the high end graph card and ctrl+shift+H for low end card. Makes it a littlebit more easy to switch easy

I don't understand why everything has to be compared to Apple. You are not only detracting from HP's design, but Apple's as well. Just because a laptop is made of aluminum doesn't mean it stole the MacBook's "look". It simply means aluminum is a good material aesthetically and physically for computers, which it clearly is. HP would be stealing Apple's design if it was a uni-body, proprietary, and had a glowing apple on the front. The ENVY-- does not.

You really should open up Paint, and put up a 1080p fullscreen of 255,0,0 Red, on both the Envy and another screen simultaneously, to show how red or orange the screen your model has actually is. The ones I've done this with are not even remotely red.
This side by side comparison is the only way to truly test the color accuracy. It would be much appreciated if you could set up this test environment then upload a video of it.

@killerra I have opened a pure red doc in Photoshop CS 5 on the Envy, a color calibrated Mac running the 30" Cinema Display (great color gamut) and the Samsung Series 7 Chronos. On our unit, the red is warmer than it should be but not terribly so. Red still looks like a warm red rather than orange.
