This is NOT Bill Murray. Bill Murray, the guy who played star roles in Ghostbusters and Garfield, looks different than this. Please do not call this impostor Bill Murray
I don't understand why Billy Murray was such a popular singer. His singing voice is terrible by any standard of music. I realize that the acoustic recording process made singing difficult, but that excuse isn't good enough. There were many good singers who recorded acoustically, such as Sophie Tucker, Al Jolson, Enrico Caruso, and the Classic Female Blues performers.
Was his singing part of some other musical tradition that did not value good music as much as say, lyrics, tone, and energy?
@bernadotete That's exactly right!!! I love Boardwalk Empire, in fact I just bought this record on Ebay! Prohibition was so incredibly stupid, but it gave us this program and musicals like "Chicago" so I love it (he typed, drinking a beer)
Billy Murray was the biggest selling recording artist of the first quarter of the 20th century, and with good reason. More than 400 hits featuring that amazing, versatile voice, which could master so many different genres with perfection and conviction that puts almost all others to shame. And then there's his ensemble work with the various quartets and the Heidelburg Quintet.. We were not worthy! He is greatly, greatly missed.
In addition to Cuba, you could still get booze in Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and most anywhere else in the world during Prohibition if you chose to take a trip.
my second visit, using an alternate account, whereby i warn people who might be posting original works up to vimeo, that they are at risk of instant, no-recourse erasure of their legal, compliant works. i love this song so much. but my caps shift key is busted, oh sad for that. thanks again,
Yes, this plays as Al Capone enters the whore house in Chicago one evening during the beginning of season 1 episode 4

The Austin Lounge Lizards' version isn't bad, either, but they omit the second verse, which I think ends with an actual punch-line.

Turn on your ratings if you like. You'll get many high fives for this excellent transfer of the best Prohibition song of them all.
Thanks!

Cuba was quite a playground in those days--though the Cubans probably had mixed feelings about the boozy influx. ;)
