nice work, I'd love to eventually see an option in SL to use a kinect to map facial expression and arm and hand movements to your avatar, it would add a TON of dimension to voice chatting
Any chance of developing the software for a Mac? Or, do you know if there is similar software available for a Mac. Thank you for creating this for users.
@quiettornado1970 maybe cause it's not the video to talk about how can you transform you avatar in anything you want from a little light to a giant transformer?
GOOD WORK GETTING THE INFO OUT U SHOW A LIL SHYNESS WHEN TALKIN DONT WORRY AND DONT TRY TO PAUSE ON PURPOSE JUST FLOW W IT ITS MORE NATURAL JUST A TIP NOT AN INSULT GREAT JOB
If there wasn't so much latency in 2nd Life this would be a pretty amazing step towards improving internet social inter action.
But watching the movements necessary to control your avatar is still seems to robotic rather then it mimicking your exact movements. lol I'd probably love to hang out in 2nd Life clubs if people where forced to dance for real... omg I'd be awful but who cares right :P
@techiedavid This is new. Dr. Evan Suma, also of the MxR lab, developed FAAST so that it could be used with many different games. This software was specifically designed with social gestures in mind and also allowed us to experiment with an existing navigation technique used in VR.
FANTASTIC WORK! KEEP GOING!!! This is truly great work USCICT, will you be releasing this opensource, or releasing your own browser? Keep it up! my hat is off to you!
Very nice. I'm glad someone finally did this - whilst others have done something similar, this is using commodity priced hardware which for me makes it much more 'real'.
This is an awesome breakthrough! Congratulations :)
Aye, I'm aware that this still requires a bit of tweaking and that you're using standard gestures and so forth; and the 2-second-delay is a bit annoying for most. But it's a start! Someone like you needed to show that it's possible to get Kinect working with SL; now the technology just needs to be improved :)
Yay, finally some *useful* function for Kinect :) Microsoft should be proud, you've just expanded their market :)
Cool! The SL Twitterverse is already heating up over this. And blogged by Hamlet Au in New World Notes. The question of embodiment and identity is huge.
hey i just got this desk thing for SL and this is my first comment from in second life

thats nice and all but your using viewer 2 which is fail beyond all words. Alot of us the tvp's. will it support those too?
myfordescort 1 year ago
@myfordescort Viewer 2 includes some improvements that we can't see - I'm talking about stuff that only matters to developers.
That's why it only makes sense to start such a project on the new generation of viewers, not on the old one.
Many people still agree with you - nonetheless, viewers based on 1.x code will move to 2.x codebase in 2011.
You will deal with this.

wait until puppeteering comes out:
search for "puppeteering second life wiki" and choose the first result
you will really make the connection!
drcanoro 1 year ago
@drcanoro unfortunately Puppeteering is a dead project. No updates about it since more than a year.
But I see what you mean and I agree, it would just be the perfect feature for this kind of gesture-powered input.

At long last, this is the hack I've been waiting for since the Kinect was launched. Thanks so much for doing this!
