  • Tom Brady wouldnt have lasted 5 years if he would have played in that era

  • wow..that was text book

  • and this is why football sucks nowadays....the national fail league

  • @1327dan not only a fine but a 1st and goal penalty at the 1 inch line

  • I remember watching this as a diehard Giants fan. Gary was at the bottom of the Giants Linebacker crew that year compared to LT, Carson and Banks but he sure did move up

the pecking order in this playoffs. Gary was the thinking man's linebacker

  • The HIT heard around the World! GO BIG BLUE........NYG Forever......Gary Reasons,ur the man.

  • you know, it's not just about injuries, it's for example about a lifelong mental handycap....when i see hits like that, of course it looks great for the audience, and the players only play for the audience, bute think about the consequences....nobody wants to know the real number of handycapped former football players

  • humphries mouthpiece goes flying!!!

  • Beautiful simply Beautiful!!!!!

  • Lol if this wasnt a penalty today, Roger Goodell would be thinking of a rule to make it a penalty in the future....probably a "Defendless Runningback" penalty

  • Poor Gary. He only had to play along Taylor, Carson and Banks, yet he would have

been the best linebacker on any other team other than the Giants

  • Gary Reasons. "The toughest white guy in New York"...Not my quote, but, true. He inspired me to try football. I noticed him when everybody else was talking about L.T.

  • I don't care if you're six years old or sixty, male or female...

The second you make a hit like that at any point in your life or football career, you're officially a man. If I saw a six year old smack someone like that, I would literally sell him alcohol and/or a handgun if the occasion ever came up.

  • @InvisionFreeLegends lo-fucking-l

  • if roger goodell was commisioner tht would be a fine and a suspension.......its so ridiculous how u cant see hits like tht now thats football at its best and now the game is to the point where u have to make sure u hit the guy properly or its a penalty......i understand there trying to make players safer but cmon injuries are gonna happen

  • @1327dan No, it wouldn't be. All of you people are morons. This hit is legal by todays standards as well. Learn the fucking game.

  • @richig761 DOPEY,YOU LEARN THE GAME! NFL IS SOFT BULLSHIT NOW.BRADY IS A FAG AND WOULD NEVER MAKE IT WHEN NFL WAS REAL.NOW KNOW YOUR ROLE AND SHUT THAT DAMN MOUTH CUZ YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT 100% REAL FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!

  • @WOLFGANG5520 Yup... you're all a bunch of angry and clueless morons. This post pretty much proves my point. Players today are far bigger, far stronger, and far faster. LOL, these guys take a FAAARRRR bigger pounding than the guys in your little glory days did. Lineman back then were 250 pounds for christ sakes. LB's are bigger than that now, and FASTER. Get a clue old man.

  • @richig761 YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT REAL FOOTBALL.NOW SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH!

  • @WOLFGANG5520 What an articulate argument sir! LMAO

  • @richig761 its helmet to helmet its not james harrison did the same thing to colt mccoy and he got fined and suspended.......

  • @1327dan OMG you people are clueless. When a runner is in the open field, you can hit him in the head. You can't hit a QB or a defenseless WR head to head. That is it. People still get hit head to head all the time.

  • @1327dan They are just trying to be safe dude, imagine how bad you'd feel, cause you led with your head into another guys helmet and you broke his spine and ruined his life, rather than shoulder and breaking a rib. I mean we all like seeing big hits, but you also have to understand that with there being less rules for tackling you might see alot of great players only playing for 5 years instead of 10-15 because of injuries.

  • @caniwatchavidplz Totally agree. As an example, Harry Carson. He played for twelve years, and he was a really rough player. Nowadays he suffers post-concussion syndrome, he has problems with his speech. Big hits are entertaining, but safety of the players should always be number one priority.

  • man i miss ol school football :(

  • that hit still gets me fired up

LT, Gary Reasons, Pepper Johnson, Carl Banks was a great group of LB's together

  • I miss these days of the NFL. It seemed less contrived than today's game, if that makes sense.

  • What a great hit!!

  • this is the time james harrison should have played. great hit though!

  • FOOT-BALL!

  • @Lazzypants No

  • ah the greatest linebacking core ever...John Madden announcing too does it get any better

  • THIS WAS FOOTBALL! Not the shit we see on TV today. Smash mouth football needs to come back, when men were men not Justin Bieber looking mother fuckers. I'm looking at you Tom Brady.

  • @Scarecrow2004 Yes the NFL is bullshit now! Brady and so many QBs these days wear skirts.Brady would be nothing in 1980's.

  • @Scarecrow2004 Agree!

  • @Scarecrow2004 Oh shutup... football is a rougher sport than it ever has been.

  • @richig761

You are entitled to your own opinions and so am I. However, I do believe that there are more people on here who agree with me on the subject than with you.

  • @Scarecrow2004 LOL, WOW... the youtube football population agrees with you. I think that's all I really have to say right there.

  • @richig761

I'm not going to argue with you, I'm just saying that football needs to go back to how it was. It seems like the NFL has become more of a passing game than a running game. How many QB this season passed for 5,000+ yards? It never was like that in the old days, that is why Dan Marino's record wasn't broken until now. I guess people don't want to see dominant defenses anymore, they want to see 50+ points on the board from both teams. To me that is not football.

  • @Scarecrow2004 I agree, but the game evolves man. It's just like anything else. I would love to see dominant defense again, but I love the new NFL as well. When you say "the old NFL was better" etc... you just sound like a stubborn old man living in the past. LOL, and that's not a shot at your or anything. I mean anyone who talks like that.

  • @richig761

I believe that there are still tough football players but there are so many rules today that the players can't do there job.

  • @Scarecrow2004 Not true at all. Don't hit a guy in the head when he's defenseless. Only real change.

  • @Scarecrow2004 This hit would be legal, even with today's rules...

  • @myles755

    I never said it wasn't.

  • @Scarecrow2004 You implied that we don't see these hits anymore in today's NFL. Or you implied that they are not allowed in todays NFL. There were goal line hits in this last season that were harder than this hit.

  • @Scarecrow2004 Yes bring back the old rules! Todays game is a joke

  • This is the best of the three best

  • Great linebacker...awesome on Tecmo Super Bowl lol. Gotta love the 1990 NY Giants.

  • i love seeing someone's mouthpiece go flying on the replay

  • Oh how i miss those days of "real" football.

  • The Giants have always had great defensive teams hands down.

  • This is how you play football.

  • fuck.

  • You can go helmet to helmet with a ball carrier. Did anyone not watch the 9ers Saints game?

  • @jacobrosskleinberg no..u cant... I hope you're not being sarcastic...

  • That is a fine today

  • @SoLEkid94 the only thing not fine with today's rule was his leading with the helmet which wasn't even needed and with knowing the rules he would have followed through shoulder just fine.

  • That is what you call football, plain and simple.

  • probably would have been a penalty in todays game

  • @casey8155 your right

  • @casey8155 Yeah..Especially if Bill Leavy was the ref.

  • @casey8155 No, because he is a running back so helmet to helmet doesn't come in....

  • @SuperLions7 Yes it does. Any helmet to helmet gets flagged, and rightfully so. Helmet to shoulder or shoulder to shoulder (like Ronnie Lott used to do) wouldn't get flagged.

  • @casey8155 I doubt it because he hit the RB in the shoulder. Although, it was not a very smart hit and he is lucky that he didn't break his neck or get a concussion.

  • Comment removed

  • Damn he stuck his ass.LOL

  • That would be a helmet to helmet now days

  • @Lazzypants no it wouldnt. it was a run play

  • @Lazzypants Nope, you can go helmet to helmet with the ball carrier. DId you not see 9ers/saints?

  • Would that be a penalty today?

  • @Popcop45 the defender landed his helmet on the players shoulder and that should be a penalty today. With that being said and knowing today's rules he didn't need that momentum with the helmet and using his shoulder to complete the hit would have been just as spectacular.

  • That...was an awesome fucking hit! He'd get a 3-game suspension and a 6-digit fine nowadays but MAN...that was a hit.

  • What game is this?

  • What happens when a stoppable force meets a flying object?

  • Look at the gum shield at 46 seconds!! Great play.

  • As a Giants fan I'd rate this as one of the great plays in franchise history.

  • @beefoneeto that kick return in the superbowl over ten years ago against the Ravens was sweet. Perfect way to get back into the game to get seven on the board. Well, maybe not that one and then you have the David Tyree play that will be famous 100 years from now when they look back at old history. Maybe tonight Tuck will break a tie with 20 secs left in the 4th with Brady driving in a tie game to force a fumble and run it back. That maybe the best which is yet to come.

  • Gary Reasons, Carl Banks, Harry Carson, Pepper Johnson and of course the GREATEST EVER...Lawrence Taylor. In my opinion, the GREATEST set of LB's the NFL has seen.

That hit right there would of been the 'JACKED UP!' hit of the year.

Go NY G-MEN in SB XLVI

  • @chrischeyari I have to agree with you, and I say this as a Redskins fan (and hence big Giants rival). Taylor was always the spectacular one, but Reasons, Banks, and especially Carson were solid. As much as I hated the Giants, I could never find it in my heart to hate Harry Carson. What a class guy.

  • @Moose6340 Agreed. = ]

  • @chrischeyari your forgetting about their D-line but oh well

  • No way these guys could play with this era's players ... NOT! Sorry "NOT!" was appropriate in response to that comment that a lot of people make. 1983-1995 THE GOLDEN ERA

  • The good old days, when you could send a guys ear pad flying further than the player and have it called a great hit!!!

  • One of the proudest Giant moments ever!!!

  • @Jhensy2012 Indeed!! I remember this hit like it was yesterday

  • ..this was when football was real..smash mouth football!!

  • lmao he intercepted the runner

  • old school these young punks today dont know what football was...lambert tatum bobby bell ect....shame at least i got to see um dimantle peoples bodies...

  • NEW YORK GIANTS!!!!!

  • That hit would actually be illegal today since it was helmet to helmet.

  • Reasons was such an underrated LB. Banks, LT, Carson etc. got all the attention on those Parcells era Giants teams....but Reasons was the forgotten guy. Yet he was very good and make a ton of big plays.

  • 0:20... "that is great football!" Straight out of Frank Caliendo's act!

  • Warning, goal line prone to flying earpads..lol.

  • Even if this is helmet to helmet, it's not worthy of a penalty because the runner isn't considered a defenseless receiver

  • All the whiners complaining about it being helemet to helmet hit...You must all be youngsters who like the No Fun League...Football is a violent contact sport, it's not some video game...This is football the way it should be played...PERIOD!!!

  • @smartfacts SO TRUE DUDE. Everyone forgot how great the NFL used to be.

  • @MajorandPaul they want you to forget. They (NFL) want to erase the past, sell merchandise, deliver advertising, etc. They dont want new fans to know once it was different. Why no classic NFL films etc on NFL Network?

  • @giles422 It's like we were seperated at birth. I'm convinced the reason they now review EVERY tud is to run more ads. One of my fave things off all time the week of the Super Bowl was when ESPN would run every NFL FIlms summary of every preceding Super Bowl/Season. I would stay up all night and just LOVE the history of the NFL, the strategy, the evolution. But now, we've got Madonna at fucking halftime and SHE's an upgrade compared to Young Jeezy or some other BS. We've been robbed as fans.

  • @MajorandPaul yup!

  • I like how Humphrey's mouth piece goes flying about 5 yards..

  • Personal foul penalty, 25k fine, and a 1 game suspension if

    he makes that hit today.

  • @ChrisRane The sad thing is, you might be right. Head to Head.

  • @ChrisRane Check the rule book... it's still legal in today's NFL. Did you see the hit Pierre Thomas in the Saints-Niners game last week? Thomas had a concussion, but no penalty, no fine, no problem (except for Thomas).

  • @ChrisRane Actually you will almost NEVER see helmet to helmet penalties on running plays...they are usually called on plays involving a pass where the receiver is deemed defenseless. Most of them are BS too.

  • Comment removed

  • I'll give you 55 Reasons and Humphrey aint one

  • If this happened in 2012 you'd have a bunch of pussies on here crying about it being a dirty helmet to helmet hit that should have been a penalty

  • Everyone see the flying mouthguard?

  • I remember that game as if it was yesterday. A great stand by Reasons, and then there was another play where he tipped an Elway pass to kill a drive that threatened the giants. Meggett also had a great game using his quick feet against the tough, but slow and clumsy, broncos. I taped all the giants' games that year as I told my brother that they looked good enough to win it all... I think that I really underestimated the strength of the 49ers and Bills that year, as those were such tough games.

  • wow if he would have done now he would have gotten unnecessary roughtness, hit on a defenseless runner.

  • @jmg4314 defenseless? do you know what that word means?

  • holy shit! circa Jack Lambert!

  • I remember this game . Reasons made a couple other great plays. He had the game of his life.

  • Gary Reasons: the ultimate Other Guy.

  • The truly sad thing about this great hit and moment is that this hit is now illegal in this new pussy NFL. This would be a personal foul ...ball goes to Broncos with a first down and Giants probably lose the game. Commish Godell...you are a fucking pussy!!

  • @responare in today's NFL..

*FLAG* personal foul.. helmet to helmet contact. #55 defense. half the distance to the goal..automatic 1st down

  • @Junior71392 your correct....I don't know how old you are but I guess you see that these hits were common but not dirty. The magnitude of this play is timeless. At the time the Giants needed this game to keep pace in the division. Yet with the pussy ...fag...commish we have now in the league the results and the game would have been altered.

  • @Junior71392

Actually, since the hit was on a rb, it wouldn't be called. The NFL wants to make passing the ball as easy as possible, they couldn't care less about the running game.

  • I am a hard core Cowboys fan but that was a fantastic stop by Reasons

  • YEAH!

Now that's how you play football!

  • I remember this play.

Reasons was one of the most underrated players in the NFL.

He did it all and rarely made mistakes.

You could count on Gary Reasons.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Watching this is so much better when u turn the snowflakes on

  • So much Determination DO!

  • Yep. He would be suspended for that now...

  • What year is this? 1989

  • @SFFOOL76 yes...4th and goal

  • The good ol days.

  • I'd have to agree with paul353. Goa-line or not, he'd probably get called for helmet to helmet today

  • O MAN!!!! GEEEEEEEE MEN!!!!!!!!

  • This would not be a penatly since its on the goalline. Both players leave their there feet. If the runner chooses to leap over the line of scrimmage to cross the goal line, the defender has the same right to leap and make the tackle. If on the other hand, the defender leaps but the runner never does, it would be a penatly. Clean play.

  • Can't even do that on Madden! BOOM!

  • Those L.T. era Giants defenses were bad ass.

  • good lord.

  • That was an earpad that was knocked out....NO one's mouthpiece is that big, LOL!!!

  • Years later I still get chills when I watch this play ... Simply fantastic. If you like run defense and especially linebacker play, then you LOVE this.

  • i think Bobby Humphrey disliked this..

  • It's a freakin Jaw Pad (Ear pad as described by some) it's not symetrical enough and is way too big to be a mouthpiece unless Humprey is related to the Elephant man. And unless Humprey spat it out it's not consistent with the source of impact, where as a jawpad flying from the side to contact is actually possible, this is before the days of the VSR range from Riddell and pads used to fly out quite a lot.

  • oooooh crap thats helmet to helmet

  • Reasons would probably be called for a penalty if that play happened today

  • Would have been a penalty in today's NFL for a personal foul for Gary Reason's leaving his feet. The NFL today has become a powdercake league. I loved the NFL in the 80's.

  • It was the mouthpiece.

  • Like Madden said at the end......"THAT IS FOOTBALL!" Enough said. 80's NFL all the way man, the game hasn't been the same since. NFL is a joke now compared to the level of play back then! Players PLAYED and STUDIED the game and became more mature as veterans, and made a hell of a lot less money back then doing it. Best era of professional football, we'll never see it again.

  • Absolutely fantastic..... The Hit.

  • earpiece

  • earpice

  • that some kamikaze shit there

    just total commitment

  • WOW, THAT INDEED IS FOOTBALL!

  • What year was this?

  • @Sherpaful This was the 1989 season.

  • Today, he'd probaby get a flag for helmet to helmet and a fine to boot.

  • I remember this so clearly. LT was out for this game, and Reasons came up HUGE. Probably one of the best all-around guys against the run and the pass to play the LB spot. And if I recall correctly, he could play inside and outside. He just had the misfortune of playing behind one of the greatest linebacking corps ever. LT, Carl Banks, and Harry Carson or Pepper Johnson. Even the other backups at the time, Byron Hunt, Andy Headen, were great.

  • @zg1000dru1 You too. Damn. The year before the 2nd Super Bowl, I was in college and was going nuts during this game. You're right. Reasons was playing with a posse of great LB's. Pepper was so under-rated. Reasons was just one of a great corps of Giant LB's. Great memories.

  • this was a great game every Giants game in the mid 80's and early 90's were always close and awesome.

  • Deeeeee-NIED!

  • Real Giants fans LOVED REASONS.

  • Looks like an earpiece to me. Both the ear piece and mouth piece are similar in shape. However the mouth piece is much smaller. If it is a mouth piece without the holder that connects to the helmet. Yeah definatley looks like the ear piece to me.

  • What year was this?

  • I want the whole stand. Thanks for posting but I want the series!!

  • It's an ear pad. Or Humphrey has a huge mouth.

  • Go G-Men. Did you see Humphreys ear pad fly.

  • There was a 'us' mentality about NY then that hasn't been replaced ever since.

  • luv the giants go blue

  • reasons had 2 big plays that year, first that one, which is one of the best hits ive ever seen, plus 4th and on the goal line, his team needed that....and then the fake punt in the championship...they dont win that game without that play.....

  • @soycd666 the fake punt was in 1990 against SF. This is from 1989.

  • Legendary. Big blue fans will remember for eternity.

  • I remember watching this game live like it was yesterday. Later in the broadcast, Madden called it "the hit of the decade."

And it was the earpad. Left side pad.

  • God damn I miss real football. Before all the felons, thugs, and douche bags.

  • @morrieswigs @dancmcdonald who the hell cares, it was a great play

  • Every time Gary Reasons rings somebody's bell, an angel gets a turnover.
