the carter family in 1928 i believe took this to number one? which was the original song, brilliant but then i love the wild side of life by status quo also
There were so many GREAT country stars some years ago, but I wonder if Marty wasn´n the only one who could take ANY song and make a masterpiece out of it? Didn´t know until recently. that he has two sons that sing too - and at least one of them amazed me greatly by sounding almost exactly as his dad. Hope they start selling the Robbins Juniors records in Sweden soon, want a big collection of theirs too...
I play the piano and have the words and music for I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes, The Wild Side of Life, It Wasnt God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels [Female version of the Wild Side Of Life] and The Prisoners Song. They are all very similar but I think that the Prisoners Song may been the original. The Great Speckled Bird is virtually The Prisoners Song changed from 4/4 time to 3/4 time.
@thetannykid This melody is the ONLY song to make number 1 on the charts with 5 different sets of lyrics. Can you name the original recording artists one those 5?

The Carter Family sang it and theirs may be the original. Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry and Eddy Arnold all did it as well. Who changed the words to 'Great Speckled Bird' and 'It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels?!
You forgot "Wild Side of Life". "'It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" was written as a response to Wild Side of Life. WSOL written by Arlie Carter and William Warren. IWGWMHTA written by J.D. Miller and originally recorded by Kitty Wells, 1952.

I am surprised he didn't break into The Great Speckled Bird. It's the same melody. I miss Marty so much!
