Class of 65 here. I was in my first year of electronics course in the nearby jr. college when the fire happened. I spent the week we were off to help the janitor clean the second floor in the HS before they got back from two week Christmas holidays. I use to get payed to clean up the football field aftewr the home games and on Sunday mornings after St. Mary's played their home games on Sat. night.
Lyle, thanks so much for sharing this! The fellow who set the fire was in my home room (remember that he also set fire to garages in his neighborhood and the Lafayette Hotel where he worked). That's as close as I got to the fire, besides being rerouted to Washington Jr. High for the following year, then back to the partially rebuilt senior high building for my senior year. Interesting times in little Clinton, IA.
Most schools would be burned to the ground by some part of their student body, it's true. High school is a tough time; the pressures are intense and some kids and cliques are insanely cruel. I had a fairly good experience at this h.s., but I was really glad to graduate and get on with life. Thanks for watching and your comments....
DFD, thanks so much for watching and commenting. I hadn't visited Clinton in over 20 years and my old classmate and I decided we should visit all the old places where we used to hang out. It was a lot of fun! Funny to hear that there is only one pool now -- the other was a bit funky and old when we went to school there; it's nickname was the Black Hole of Calcutta. Your mom is a bit older than me; I was two years back when the fire hit (Class of 1970). Have a great senior year, DFD! Best, Jay
Hi, Bryan! Thanks so much for watching this. It was great to return for a visit after 20 years absence; the town is struggling a bit and the new casino on the outskirts is threatening to suck up all the energy from the core city to the rural/suburban part of town. That was a bit sad to see, but the high school was a gas to visit! Have fun in beautiful Phoenix! Best, Jay (Class of 70)
This school is now so strict you wanna just kick the teachers sometimes and we have a new gym and new addition in general

Lol. Not sure why, but I found this video to be entertaining.
My mom was a senior at this school the year they had the fire.
I'm going to be a Senior there this year.. hope there aren't any repeats in fire incidents.
I hope you enjoyed your visit back!
(There's only one pool now, the other is used for storage.. I don't even know where it is.)
