Shut Your Mouth is their hardest, most passionate album. That span of time from that, to Sing the Sorrow are my favorite albums, StS included. But SYMOYE is probably my favorite album of all time.
if you know anything about davey havok, you'll know he's still very into the hardcore/punk scene. just because someone doesn't tie themselves down to one genre of music doesn't mean they're selling out. the dudes are in their late 30s and early 40s, of course they're going to soften their style up a bit. they tried to create their own sound after davey blew out his vocals from singing like this. crying about how they used to sound wont change shit.
@Questicles There's that bullshit argument again. Look at bands like Slayer or The Melvins or Sick Of It All. All been going for way longer than AFI have and they're not softening at all.
see why can't they do more stuff like this. i fucking hate afi and i find songs like this that are awesome but make me hate the band more because they changed their music to the COMPLETE AND UTTER SHIT IT IS NOW >:O
bands grow and change, it´s natural, likes and ways of perceiving things keep changing as years pass, so obviously you can´t make the same music you made 15 years earlier and it also gets boring, do you seriously wanna hear a record that sounds like it´s predecessor?
@fruittymonstah Doesn't have to sound like it's predecessor, just has to stay true to their sound. Although its really subjective because some bands sound good with different sounds, however I feel like most bands that change their sound change for the worse. AFI is one of those bands.
what could possibly go wrong? you could all go mainstream and gay. literally gay. not just stupid. actually homosexual. at least davey doesn't look like a woman anymore.
man im fucking tired of seeing comments on here about AFI sucking now and that this was better. fuck the bull shit! i love AFI no matter what style of music they play or how they look. thats what makes AFi, AFI! damn it! and if you cant handle that then you shouldn't listen to them.
@milkit81 . If you say what makes AFI is the fact that you love them no matter what style of music they play or how they look, and people who can't handle that shouldn't listen to them, then that means you're saying they aren't a band defined by a particular genre or image- but they are. I can't think of an artist or band who isn't. And really, "no matter what style of music they play or how they look?" What if they started wearing tight neon pants and playing jazz fusion? You'd still love them?
You could hear them getting darker and more gothic on every album back then. For me their peak was the three albums Shut your mouth and open your eyes, Black Sails in the sunset, and Art of Drowning. They sounded like no other punk band at the time. Really dark, melodic hardcore. After that all the danger left them and I could never get into it.
very very very very very very very very very very punk, sorry all you answr-that-and-stay-fashionable-ophiles but AFI's horror punk days were AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
@staphinfection "They however, will never ever ever ever compare to a fraction of the Misfits(old), even the shitty live recordings on a shitty drunken night."
Do you honestly think the old Misfits songs are better than the new AFI? That's funny, because when I listen to the old Misfits I hear plain, dull/simple punk music with uninspiring lyrics and a vocalist who can't hit the notes properly.
Oh well, your opinion is of course as valid as my own, I just think it's interesting :)
I was a huge fan when AFI were a underground punk band early 90's first 2 albums very good.. everything else total crap. I cant listen to their Emo ass now a days. I saw them at Koo's art cafe in Satan Ana like 96 or so. Saw many good old school punk band play there.
It's a pity they don't play this live often. Ah well, I got to see them play at Stubbs in Austin about 8 months ago and they were still badass. Davey can still scream like he does on Sing the Sorrow and sing fast like he does on this, so whoever said previously that Davey couldn't sing like this anymore was an idiot. They did ny-quil during their encore and fucking kicked ass. Despite what others say, I look forward to them conquering another genre of music like they seem to do with every album.
Hey man every band changes their style. Its just who the are now, they definitely are NOT pussy's and for everyone's info, Davey is NOT gay, hes been dating the same girl for like the past eight years
@bobokk im not saying that "idiot".I like all the music that they made and besides it doesnt matter what they're music is, what matters is that their still making music. if they didnt change genres then they would run outta ideas for songs and would of started to fail years ago.
i like most of there stuff although this is better, and i respect straight edge butSilhouetteBLKO people like u that go around advertising there edge are plain bad and are just posers
Wouldn't a "real" AFI fan like, respect, and be supportive of their new direction? Ive been an AFI fan since I was 13, and through all their changes they are amazing. While this stuff is great, but so is the stuff from Crash Love. I can put every AFI CD on a playlist and listen all the way through knowing that this band is my favorite band, and there wouldn't be ONE song I would skip or dis. Old AFI and new AFI are simply amazing.
@marcushaselden NAH ...this is a band called Asking For It or Anthems for Insubordinates who after a long time of pussying out created a new band called A Fire Inside :) love this punk stuff by them :)
@marcushaselden its the money dude!!!! idk how old you are but growing up for me AFI was the shit but now they're like emo rock bullshit!!!! but yeah it is wierd!
@marcushaselden definitely have to agree with you there, when I got this album, I was all "holy shit, wtf?!?!?!?!?" status to see how they go from this to something more like Medicate or whatever else they got out xD
@marcushaselden I know, man, plus, i think their "transformation" was the most shocking of all bands i know that have turned into something different, that's just bizarre
@marcushaselden People change their styles. I used to play almost entirely punk stuff but now I play indie rock mostly. Hardcore and punk are still the genres I listen to the most but they just aren't as fun for me to play anymore.
@marcushaselden if you listen to each album in order, it makes sense. all hallow's ep is still punk, but it's a lot closer to their current sound. then the art of drowning came out which was a lot more melodic, listen to days of the phoenix, which naturally lead into the sound on sing the sorrow, which naturally lead into the sound on decemberunderground. but it really is jarring listening to early afi then new afi
guys davey was 17 or 18 when he did this as he grew up his music started getting more seriouse and meaningful i agree this is amazing and i wish they wuld go back to this but there new stuf is good listen to the words and push his apperance aside cause the new shit is pure poetry and amazing good luck people dising them but there good. enuf said

@helloieatchicken AFI was never "horror punk". That term alone is reserved for the Misfits, and only the Misfits(the original old ones).
Davey douchebag Havok was a fan so decided to pretend he came up with the idea of horror punk, and called his band that.
They however, will never ever ever ever compare to a fraction of the Misfits(old), even the shitty live recordings on a shitty drunken night.
