with all that smoke from the engine, they should have known better than to run it. If a chieftain starts smoking like that its time for a powerpack replacement
@andymars8995 i know chieftains smoke, but that much white smoke is a clear indicator of a engine problem. chieftains should only smoke light blue when at normal operating temp. white smoke is either a cold motor or a sign of an immanent mechanical failure. i should know i spent 2 years working at a museum driving a chieftain. and almost as much time poking through the bowles of the tank
@YB49887 YB49887Well I served 7 years on Chieftain in the Royal Tank Regiment and my friend for 14 years, so we know a bit about them too. Not that I'm disagreeing with you, it sounds interesting that you were involved in a museum - which one was it may I ask? Lucky to have a running Chieftain! But like museums, as a company we can't just change engine packs unless we have to. We have 5 Chieftains but only 4 spare packs. By the way, the engine survived and the tank is still running!
@andymars8995 i meant no offence to anyone. as far as the museum it was a local museum ran by a man who collected ex military vehicles, he bought 2 chieftains when they went on surplus. I was friends with the man and lucky enough to be charged with operating the chieftains. well built tanks but the downshift from 4th to 3rd always seemed to be very jumpy. looking back we only had to replace one l60 the entire time i was there, and that was because the liner completely let go.
@YB49887 No offence taken, nice to discuss these things. I served on Mk3's back in the 1970's, so the engine was a disaster! These we have here are mk9 & 10's - much better.
It seems that the engine air intakes sucked in a load of oil and warer from the engine compartment. Being a multi fuel engine it was happy to run on this, by-passing all control! Much of that smoke is infact steam from the injected water, fortunately it only melted the injectors- it could have been much worse. The only steam driven Chieftain Tank?
I can think of a worse moment for the engine to do that. A screaming runaway chieftain is not something you see every day and I prefer to see them on Youtube. Great video! I hope the engine didn't suffer too much.
I cant wait for the Challengers to go up for surplus sale!

@jomorris1022 I fear they won't. Their armour is still top secret. No Challengers for us! though we do have a prototype without Chobham

What happened to cause the over-rev ?

We don't know yet, investigations will start today, hopefully not too much damage, but it didn't look good did it? Will keep you posted.
