Oh wow, Steve and Candice were so beautiful together; the way they look at each other, they really seem in the first confusing exhilerating flushes of true love. Steve was such an incredible underrated subtle romantic actor; and the young Candice was so extraordinarily lovely, she takes the breath away. I saw this movie when I was 10; little wonder it made such an impression on me.
A beautiful musical score by Goldsmith...like so many he did...McQueen should have got the Oscar for this film - one of the great films of all time...but the musical score was so beautiful and fits the film so well...This film is probably McQueens best although he is a great actor and made many good films - his screen presence and personna ranks among the best in his field....they dont make films like this anymore and you wont see this quality of film in the future...real films - no tricks.
Re the original soundtrack: it is still available. I got the CD either on eBay or half, com within the past year. It has several version of this main love theme on it. Wonderful. And the movie is available as well.
Boy, are you ever right about that one. McQueen looks like he was born in Naval Whites and looks dashing in Cracker Jacks. Simon Oakland looks like a slob in his uniform.
One of the greatest films made in the 20th C.Like all the great male actors of his generation Steve started life out in the military. Check out how he stands out wearing his uniform compared to others.Tricks not taught at acting school.
One of the best films Steve made although they are all good
@MrSunlander Wish I did. Jerry Goldsmith produced great music fo scores of movies including Blue Max, Patton, Tora Tora Tora and more. Steve McQueen should have taken the Oscar for this film.
Mc Queen was nominated for his Holman role at the 1967 Oscars. Wonderful performance from Steve. He was so talented and there are no longer actors like him, genuinely talented and gifted actor, boyish and so handsome!Something that he also had, his face was so expressive and as Bob Wise said later on in an interview he didn't need any dialogue to express something, his eyes, his face were saying so much ,You could also feel the pain inside him because of his childhood as told by Candice Bergen .
I don't Know why but this is my favourite melody among all the wonderful scores that Goldsmith composed. If you listen to it during the overture it brings you the sense of adventure, epic, drama and love that the movie is supposed to convey.
@jsw1975 I like this score too....I don't know much about the story....but I like Mr. Goldsmith's music a lot, it reminds me of what he would later compose for Mulan....I first heard about the movie and the score on Music Choice, and I've been trying to find the selection that they play on Music Choice on YouTube, but with no luck so far....this video is the next best thing.

A great story written by a true China sailor.

Steve should have won the Best Actor Oscar for his brilliant performance. This score should have won an Oscar, too.

People don't realize how beautiful Candace was.She gave great performances
in Carnal Knowledge, Oliver's Story and T R Baskin. They don't make quiet ,
poignant movies like the Sand Pebbles anymore. I feel sorry for the young people
of today not being exposed to a wide array of films. Today it is all Spiderman, Transformers, Saw, etc.
