The US voted for independence 1776, got a flag 1777, got recognized 1783, then banned the importation of slaves in 1808. Very few if any slave ships would've had the American flag. I think that between 1783 and 1808 slave owners probably still bought from European slave ships, but I'd have to research it.

I live in Alabama. I always considered the rebel flag to stand for slavery and bigotry in general. Which I suppose it does in some cases. However, in most, I would say it's just a showing of history. During the civil war a vast majority of Alabamians did not have slaves, and most considered the war to be a "rich mans" war. Do I think the flag should be flown? no. But it's a perk of being an American, you can.

@Southernjuggalo63 Actully most if not all slave ships would fly the British, Dutch, Portugese, or maybe even Spanish flags. The US voted for independence 1776, got a flag 1777, got recognized 1783, then banned the importation of slaves in 1808. Very few if any slave ships would've had the American flag. I think that between 1783 and 1808 slave owners probably still bought from European slave ships, but I'd have to research it.

No one wanted to touch American ships, so slave smugglers would fly U.S. flags. Congress even had to pass a law denoucing slave ships bearing the U.S. Flag as pirates.

Ken, that's a well stated argument. It really is. But the reason they identify with the flag is because of General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who consequently started and disbanded the KKK. Ironically, he felt that they were too brutal toward blacks and had become a little to racial based. All he'd wanted was a vigilante group given the lack of police in the Reconstruction Era south.
To me the real irony is that those idiots so strongly support somebody who disowned them.

I live in Alabama. I always considered the rebel flag to stand for slavery and bigotry in general. Which I suppose it does in some cases. However, in most, I would say it's just a showing of history. During the civil war a vast majority of Alabamians did not have slaves, and most considered the war to be a "rich mans" war. Do I think the flag should be flown? no. But it's a perk of being an American, you can.
