The Broken EP, The Downward Spiral were one of a kind, and were by far his prime, but the Fragile was litterally art. The whole thing is art, its a wonderful album, just as unique, but I dont think it could shine through the spark of those two albums. Id say it was his third best, Pretty Hate Machine being 4. And Im not complaining about Trent growing up and settling down with his writing, I love NIN newer and older with all my heart, but i simply dont think anything beats those two recordings.
@frootloopwarriors Nah Hate Machine was better. He sounds increasingly burnt out after the mid-90's. He probably just wasn't sad any more. Good for him.
@dubified89 him personally I would say The Fragile was one of his darkest times. He wanted to commit suicide and wrote the song La Mer and Into the Void about killing himself and if you truly listen to that album you can hear the disspair
Ehhhhh? Presumably, whatever album you like best is his "peak" right?
Kind of a stupid thing to debate when you're dealing with someone who's still recording, and as we can tell from these demos, basically changes genres from album to album.
listening to those early Nine Inch nails demos, I can understand why when they signed them, they thought they had the new Depeche Mode...the demos sound very depeche-ish
fragile is cool but, it was after his downward spiral phase - wich was inspired by Kurt Cobain- he lost his inspiration/creativity, you can hear it his music, he spent to much time producing and not enough time experimenting and putting passion into the music.
Pretty Hate Machine Did Have A Lot Of Love Songs. Something I Can Never Have, That's What I Get, The Only Time, Kinda I Want To, Sanctified. And So On.
I have a Red Robin demos disc that features a version of KIWT similar to this one, but the one I have sounds more 80s synth-pop & the vocals are better. This version is a bit faint.
"Kinda I Want To" is my all-time fav NIN song! ...Btw, for arguments sake, I grew with NIN from the inception of their career, and lemme tell ya - their prime was around 1994-1996. That is when they hit appeal to a greater mainstream audience and nearly EVERYONE had a NIN shirt (or sweater, toque, sticker, etc.). Spiral era is when they had the most sold out shows too.
he was in his prime until he put out that "Further Down The Spiral" bullshit......after "The Downward Spiral" he has yet to put out anything worth a damn....same with Manson, he hasn't put anything out worth a damn since "AntiChhrist Superstar".................
stop trying to be clever. anyone who had phm on cassette tape in the early nineties was disappointed by the fragile. i've only heard a couple tracks after that album, and could care less. "a lot of his fans" feel the same way
@Bobnumerotres Agreed fragile was peak, albeit preceding a sharp fall-off, that is to say spiral was on par with fragile but teeth was not even close.
how can you consider with teeth part of his prime but not year zero or the slip? 89-05? thats a long prime, bro, thats like his whole career. his prime was the mid 90's. i think many disagree with you bc youre wrong.
The difference between this demo version and PHM studio version is mindblowing. I love both ;D

As for this demo, I much prefer the other version. But I prefer Twist, Sanctified and Down In It on these.

@dubified89 The production, creativity, originality, and songwriting is far superior in those albums. It has nothing to do with him personally.

I really like this version of the song. I like the original as well, but the melody in this version sounds pretty sweet.
seraph086770 2 years ago
although it is good, it's still too "80's" for NIN
AND YES, i know this is 1988, but the final version that made it to the album is waaaaay more kickass

This version indeed sounds a bit faint next to the KIWT version on The Purest Feeling III album.

It's called the Fragile, fragile is considered his true peak by a lot of his fans. You clearly don't know what you're talking about.

I dont know, I think a lot of fans (myself included) feel that The Fragile and Year Zero are some of NINs best work.

He peaked at Downward Spiral. True to that album name, his work after, for the most part, has been just that.
