@amirpooyah why do you say that about Fisk? He is an older man now. Tamayo is clearly in better shape in many regards than Fisk, but Fisk's contribution to the instrument is just so much bigger than Tamayo's so far. Have some respect.
Sólo un guitarrista de cierto nivel puede apreciar la maestria de Eliot Fisk... asi que los que no tocan mejor no hablen, o mejor aún suban sus videos y vamos comparando...
Tamayo makes Fisk look like an amateur in this video. Look how clean and effortless it is for Tamayo. It never ceases to amaze me how Fisk has gotten as famous as he is when there are so many players playing above his head these days. And by the way, to the commenter who thinks Yamashita isn't better than fisk, watch this vid from 3:30 and say that:
Hey, person who scold fisk as a rubbish...u may not have yes to know who is good and who is bad...can u play ike fisk..he has his style and i think i know what he wants to tell about himself by his guitar!
Eliot gives all of his heart to the music, and plays with more balls then anybody, achieving an unmistakable, unique sound, apart from all in the guitar world.
I guess i would know much being a classical guitar performance major. He has nothing to prove? ok, I get that but he obviously didnt practice this. He is so sluggish and off beat and that is not style that is piss pour musicianship! If you cant hear that... well, you do know anything about MUSIC
I have a BM in guitar performance from the New England conservatory so think I know I thing or two about music and Fisk.
I dont't think he's off tempo or sluggish, but, its really the quaility of the recording that is in quesiton. I agree, there may be a few hairy spots, but I think you should judge the performance as a whole.
Do not forget this is a guitar concerto where projection plays a huge role. In the tutti sections, the importance of bringing the guitar above the orchestra far outweighs the importance of delicacy.
The duet section allows the guitar to remain in its most convincing form, and that the point where you can really see Fisk's musicality in this recording.
And when I was talking about unmistakable sound, I meant exactly THAT...sound. Nobody plays with the same conviction as Fisk.
Take Barueco, Williams, Tamayo, Parkening, any other guitarist who are accomplished virtuoso and 99% of the time you will get a very similar sound (not discredit any of them, but to point out a fact). Well polished yes, nice round tone, of course, but more of the same. Each note is played with the same attack, delivering a more even, but at times flat and dry sound. Eliot uses many different attacks and accents in order to make the sound more dynamic.
For example, the flesh of the thumb, or a sliding appoyando. The guitar is not the piano or the violin, we have the capabilities to produce sound at many different timbres, and too few guitarists take complete advantage of that. Playing the guitar is not always about sounding pretty either. It is a fiery and ballsy instrument the other half of the time, and sometimes we classical guitarist tend to forget that , and become easily obssessed with the more delicate aspects of the repitoire.
I agree 100% with everything you've just posted above. I am tired of people bashing fisk because he knows how to punch out. For all you neh sayers out there, how many times have you been to a recital were the best thing the majority of the audience could say was "Oh, the guitar sure sounds pretty..." that is if they could hear it at all....I think we'll start to see alot more players following this sort of example, or atleast i hope so.
Who said tone has to be consistent? I think his tone brings out the guitars variety of sound colors, and this is musical, and Yamashita give me a break, good, but not in the same class
I got my BM in guitar performance from New England Conservatory where I studied with Fisk. Right now I'm making a living out of my guitar playing.
How could you see these things when you know nothing about the man or his playing. Your judgements are based purely on a few perfomances seen on...youtube...
2 very different guitarists, with two contrasting styles. Great recording. Anybody, who gives Fisk such, undeserved criticism, is obviously musically inept. Playing the classical guitar is about CREATING music, not playing notes off a piece of paper. Most guitarist, including many classical musicians today, strive for the superficially, prefect performance...the end result...close to that of an organic music box.
It is true that one may like one more than the other... Marco Tamayo is secure, is powerful and musical. Same, but in another way, is Eliot Fisk. If Mr. Fisk is at the place he is, it means he has something good, and I am sure he got lot to say to this world. He learned most of his technique by himself. I also know Mr. Tamayo and I know they are good friends, and I know Tamayo appreciates Fisk. Let us do the same.
I'm not talking about fisk's performance on this video. I'm talking about his playing in general which in my opinion sucks. I'm a classical guitarist as well and his technique and musical ideas are really...not my type...to be polite.
I agree that Fisk wasn't exactly super clean but I don't think that he should be crucified for not executing every note perfectly. I'll bet that everyone here has made mistakes performing live at one point or another...I know I have. Hell, I've seen even Paco de Lucia blow a few simple runs live. Lighten up people...if you want live perfection, maybe go to a rap or Britney Spears show where they lipsynche everything or they have an mp3 file for a band..I guarantee that will be mistake free!
Fisk sucks. Not one scale or a note clean. Not one frase proper played. He´s tensed in every part of his body. He destoys the whole piece and performance with his manors and rediculous vibrato. Poor Tamayo... Im sorry for this conductor and the orchestra and obove all for Rodrigo.
Haha yeah...Fisk's sly smile after that atrocious scale looked like he knew he did badly, while Tamayo just looked at Fisk in disbelief as if to say "what did I do to my career to end up playing with this guy?". Just pathetic.
ever make a mistake in life...if so, you probably shrugged it off, its even better to smile and laugh about it...what would you rather him panic and throw a hissy fit in the middle of the piece. Eliot has nothing to prove, he's already done it all...and more. If you knew anything, you'd know that tamayo studied under fisk, and you'd know that they are friends who teach together in Salzburg, so there is a great, mutiual respect between the two.
Marco Tamayo is much better than Fisk as a guitarist not only in this video. He has incredibile technique and a tremendous tone. One of the great young guitarists!
the orchestra is the Turin Philharmonic orchestra and the conductor is Paolo Ferrara. This video was recordered in 2001, at the Pittaluga guitar competition based on Alessandria, Italy.
You´re right there. The Romeros perform this much more fluently. Fisk is a great guitarrist, and fast as hell, but this concerto, (and others by Rodrigo) are not his thing. He doesn´t have the fast scales like Pepe and Angel. Still, it´s a very good. Yet Tamayo shines better in this music.
why is fisk so shit?
