Thanks for the instructive demo! Very interesting. I just wish the mane demo had gone on a bit longer...I'm a slow learner :) That horse was a great "model"- he obviously wasn't worried at all about what she was doing!
This is awesome! I watched because I'm going to use the mane technique to braid my eventing horse. For cross country I'm going to braid ribbons of our color (Royal Blue) into his mane!
The MATERIAL USED to make mane rolls is polyester - very washable and forgiving. The nice lady in the green sweatshirt is chewing her gum to beat the band! Hee-Haw!!
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe draft horses are braided out of tradition - back when horses were hitched for daily work, braiding the mane and tail prevented the hair from getting tangled in the harness and traces, so now it continues from tradition. Like mounting from the left because cavalry soldiers used to wear their sword on the left hip, so they had to swing their right leg over the horses' back.
No. Stallions get mane roll and flowers. Geldings have the option of mane roll and flowers. Generally, mares are not braided at all but are presented with pulled manes and tails as suitable for their breed.
Midge has had Belgian horses for decades. Some of the horses in this demo are more than 25 years old. They are used every single weekend for weddings, baraats and other events. They are not going to kick anybody.
Notice how she lightly touches the horse and lets him know she is back there each time she begins another demonstration. Draft horses are extremely gentle in nature and rarely ever kick, especially not ones used every day. That said, always be aware and respectful of the power!

Love to see draft horses that haven't had their tails docked (which to me is totally unnessary and cruel).

my vaulting club has a belgian mare - these tips should be great ammunition to help me keep them from roaching off her poor mane again.

What type of fabric is the mane roll?
How long should it be for my 18.2 hand draft?
In a four horse hitch we have geldings for headers and mares for wheelers. Should I still leave the mares unbraided? and the geldings braided?

When you say that Geldings have the option, Do they need it done at all?

I've seen, and read books about this, but it's always best to see in action. Thank you very much for sharing. :)
What kind of material is it you used for the braiding?

Im sorry, But there is a better, easier way of braiding a horses main/tail and still make it look nice.

Great video. I've always wondered how to do this. Someday I hope to own a few draft horses. I also wondered why do they braid the hair of horses?

Absolutely fantastic demonstration of the roll. I have never had it explained so easily! Do mares get a roll for under saddle?
