might just be an old asshole but when i was a young buck this was the music that was out there, today's music blows so hard. i am patiently waiting for the grunge rebirth.
@kevpd26 as a person that was only 3 when this album came out, I grew up with today's music and I can agree that It is absolute and utter trash. No soul goes into making mainstream music anymore, its just a capital for money.
just light some candles, put some CDs on random and enjoy it. You know you got a ton of CDs that you love to listen to. go listen to them. Go listen to them now.
@Anihilist Agreed! I literally get sad every single time I see this video because the current generation will never hear music like this. I'm glad Hum got some mainstream exposure a few years ago when Cadillac revived Stars for a commercial.
Oh what a wonderful time for music the 90's were. Yeah, it sounds like a 40 year old being too nostalgic but it really was. The ability to see so many excellent bands at the local venues was spectacular. Saw Hum several times in those days.
Similar comment to a previous poster: just happened to hear "Stars" on a local alternative station in 94 or so and was absolutely blown away. I immediately bought the album and was just floored by how good the whole thing was. Saw them in a small venue in Atlanta (same small venue where I first saw the Pumpkins). It was one of the most memorable music experiences of my life.
@deathofangel789 No man can comprehend Matt's genius. Its better not to ask why but just bask in his genius. "She's gotta system made of metal and magnet bits inside the brain" Idk what that means but I understand exactly what hes saying.
this album is by far one of the best albums of the 1990's... these guys were ahead of thier time. This is one album u can just start on track 1 and let play thru till the end without skipping.
The 90's were pretty good musically, then Clinton deregulated media, allowing corporations to buy up all the radio stations and turn them into clones. Then the same thing happened with concert venues. Now just a few companies decide what we get to hear on the radio and who we see in concert.
Lol.. wow I feel very late.. I'm only 19 and I happened to hear stars on the radio today. Never heard of this band before but something drew me to it.
2009, 9th grade, McCluer North guitar club: English teacher Mr.Barker playing an awsome song. I ask "what is that song? He says "Stars by Hum". He taught me the song and I fell in love with the band. Thanks Mr.Barker.
Like many here, I discovered these guys after hearing "Stars" on a college radio station back in '95. What drew me in was the unique combination of a chill, laid-back vocal with a wall of well-crafted distortion all around. It's like you've got a guy sitting in a chair next to you earnestly singing a folk tune while complex, layered guitars and rambunctious drums blow your walls out. Haven't heard another band do anything quite like that since.
One of most underrated bands of all time. I love these guys...been listening to them since the first time I heard Stars on the radio (I immediately went out and bought the album) and will likely be listening to them when I'm an old man.
They rocked @ the park in Chicago. I was so happy to be able to attend. Doesn't look like they're getting back together, but they wouldn't say no either. GREAT show. Good to know they still have it.
@DrNickownsyou I was there as well. Been a long time between shows for me (saw them open for Flamming Lips @ Metro) but well worth the wait. Opening with The Pod, blew me away. Brought back some great memories.
For those of you wishing to see them live, your prayers have been answered! Just found out that they're playing at Millenium Park in Chicago on May 31st, 2010 and best of all, it's Free!!!
they don't record new music but have 3 godly space-rock albums and will play at unannounced shows, the lead singer/guitarist is a family man now and coaches a high school team.
I remember hearing "Stars" on the end and rushed out to buy the album. Eventually it got lost in moving but I pickked up another copy a few years ago. It was one of the best I've ever heard.
Got this album at Meijer October/November 1995. Now its on my itunes. My friend Matt got his Masters Degree at Illinois in 2004/2005 and one of the members of HUM was in his office getting his also. GREAT band!
by far my fav band. i own many tens of thousands of songs by more than a thousand artists and Hum is my fav. as a child of the 90's, the speak to me in a way that no other band has before or since.

@adaibloom Haha I too discovered these guys at complete random on an obscure college metal station. I'm driving and Hum comes on and I'm like who the fuck is this? Nerdy ass voice but the band just fucking rocks out. I was doing like 130 mph listening to them
@halusky i like to think of it as better kind of because then we can listen to whatever song we want without having to wait for it on the radio. and instead of hearing modern shit, we can just burn this music onto a CD and show off good music!
@halusky Too true. In the 90s Rock was the popular music for the most part. So many great bands that most will never hear, but that probably goes for every decade of music that precedes our youth. Dino Jr.'s last album was pretty awesome, The Pumpkins fell apart, Sonic Youth is still doing their thing, Jane's Addiction stopped writing good music, Kurt Cobain off'd himself, Rage is no more, Mike Patton is still making interesting music, Pearl Jam is old, RHCP sold out, imo. It goes on and on. Sad
You haven't listened to enough ROCK!!! Try some old Genesis, Jethro Tull, and Black Sabbath. British rockers were notorious for that. Hum seems to be one of the few American bands to really make a point of doing that. I think Kansas may have pulled it off a time or two.
i bought this album in 95 after hearing stars on the radio. i was in 7th grade. then for some reason i put the tape on the shelf for a whole year before acctually listening to the other songs besides stars, and suddenly i was like damn this is good, and i became obsessed with hum and played it constantly in my walkman while riding on the schoolbus
Their label did a horrible job promoting them. I heard "I hate it too" on some obscure future hits cd I got as a freebie somewhere. Always wondered what became of the band. I'm amazed they even became this popular considering the abysmal promotion.
I'll never forget the first time I saw these guys. The lights went down and I guess all of the frat boy bitches thought they were guitar techs or something and started jeering them and throwing shit. They then broke into "The Pod" and shut all odf those goofy fucking frat boys the fuck up.

I guess America was too busy creaming over Gavin Rossdale.
I will pay a really good price and/or trade the UK The Pod single with three songs for the Hum CD/single (Puppets/Aphids) if someone is willing to sell/trade it. I really need it for a "master" collection of every Hum album/single I'm trying for...
10+ plus years later and this band is still one of the best. I bought this album because Stars sounded like the Pumpkins. Little did I know that they smash Pumpkins with a crowbar
Damn comment limit...Like Nirvana, Hum, Toadies, Pixies, Tribe Called Quest, Snoops early records, Red Hot Chili Peppers (they're still around and kicking ass though),Pearl Jam, Pantera, Dinosaur Jr., Stone Temple Pilots, Sublime, And what the Hell happened to Weezer? The Blue album is so great and they've fallen off. Bush, Smashing Pumpkins. Sorry to rant but man I just want to be able to turn on the radio and hear something besides another overplayed crapfest of a song. Whoo...
I never said that. Or rather... that's not what I meant. I was just listing bands that sound good to me. And saying that alot (not all) of the music today is kind of shallow and just dosen't stand up to the music from this
Shouldn't the views be more like 115,005,000?!

Pumpkins are as overrated as Hum is underrated.

Yeah we were lucky as hell for the mentioned bands.
I dont know why this band didnt go way bigger than what they did.
Lot of talent in it. Especially the drummer.

Felt good to get that off of my chest.
