I've never understood why the fuss about th so-called Red baron. He was a good pilot but not an outstanding one, cause he always went after the two-seaters, the crippled or the rookies, from there his record came. The first time he met a good flyer, a Canadian by the way, he was on the run and the Aussies caught him from the ground.
Beeing A veteran of the Aircorps you know pretty much about von Richthofen I must admit. It´s always a pleasure to meet someone who was actually there and therefore can judge the flying abillities of the opponent.
You should've seen me in my leather helmet and googles, with a scarf around my neck and wearing a long leather coat. I wonder what I'm doing here 91 years later!
I remember the stories of my grandfather and the ww1 vets. Its sad to think we are probably the last generation you will appreaciate the sacrifices they made.
my grat uncle playedf the bag pipes during themorining of the first battle raid by the canadains and was shot square in the head, those same bagpipes are in a family chest in my basement along with his cuilt and pistol
My great-uncle LLOYD HUGHES was wounded in the March 1st mass trench raid that started at 5:15 AM. Their objective was to reconnoiter and test the German defenses of Hill 145. A total of 83 were killed and 132 wounded in the 54th Canadian Infantry Battalion of which he was a member. The Germans allowed unimpeded movement up to their line and also helped facilitated recovery of both dead and wounded Canadian soldiers. Lloyd subsequently succumbed to his wounds 5 days later on March 6th 1917.
