  • Besides, when you close your eyes, it transports you instantaneously to the Middle Ages!

  • It sounds pretty similar to the oboe and the English horn.

  • HI!!!!! one the recomended links that poped up after your vid was artie shaw's 'nightmare'

have you guys ever tried doing any swing/jazz music with those early instruments? I think it might sound interesting!

  • This just sounds so beautiful to me! People have misunderstood the quality of harsh sounding intrument in favour for something that sounds 'pure'

  • I wanna learn this simply because my name is Shawn!

  • that is a real shawm

  • An iberian pre-bagpipe era instrument?

Connect it into a goretex bag and fit in a drone two octaves higher and you'll have some nice old bagpipe...hehe

    Amazing! greetings from southern Brazil

  • This is an iberian pre-bagpipe era instrument.....

    Amazing; greetings from southern Brazil

  • looks a lot like a zurna!

  • @Sercan1995 thats what it evolved from

  • @Sercan1995 the shawm originated from the zurna so zurna is the dad

  • The shawm for that bombardier is sort of a pain-relieving means.

  • is it me or does this shawm sound a bit quieter than others? i have heard some that are much much louder with a more ear piercing sound.

not that this one sounding quieter is a bad thing, it still sounds awesome, just wondered if others thought it sounded quiet too, or if it was just me lol.

  • @Queenmoreta

I'd say he's playing it quietly because he's indoors. Shawms were designed for outdoor use; because double reeds were not very technologically advanced in those days they were basically impossible to play quietly.

  • i agree with RulerofRock666, i wonder what make it is and key it is played in, its such an awesome instrument.

  • it sounds like... a weird combination between trumpet... and flute... o.o

    DO WANT!!!!

  • @alixinthemiddle actually it is the ancestor of the modern oboe, just as dulcians were the ancestor of the basoons. Shawms were often paired with sackbuts and cornetts

  • Wonderful sound. Who is the maker of the shawm? Is it a D=460 instrument?

  • What kind and what key?

  • nice... check out "Ciaramella shawm" .... you'll like it

    :-)

  • Very nice performance! What piece, exactly, were you playing?
