  • Supplemental note (not in official reports): The parking area for these planes when not flying was very close to the coastline, thus salty air may have caused earlier corrosion than with other Dash 8 owners, but Bombardier should still have considered this risk when they specified the inspection interval for the landing gear actuators. (Because many of the world's airports are near the sea).

  • Just some facts from the reports on this and the 2 other SAS Dash8 crashes:

    1. The landing gear indicator lights were known to be flaky, causing lots of false alarms, thus pilots had to plan safety landing procedures accordingly and consider both OK and not OK possibilities.

    2. The first two accidents were caused by landing gear that became rusty faster than Bombardier had said it could happen, so no one had checked.

    3. The third accident was caused by a repair mistake, O-ring loose in fluid.

  • Was on this plane last week. Read all the accidents on the internet and was shit scared of flying in it but everything was fine - no weird noises or nothing.

  • @mariancraig Lucky you ! Thank the lord that you survived.

  • We should Dash from the Dash-8, other Bombardier shit works great!

  • The wind was rocking the plane on the ground as we boarded. At Gatwick it rocked 30 degrees one way and the otherjust before landing. Quite hairy.

  • I'm always amazed at just how tiny and thin the undercarriage is on such big planes.

  • I'm flying on one of these next Tuesday.

  • Have fun ;)

  • I am surprised that only 3 people commented on this video within last one year.

  • jaer that was in Ålborg in North jutland i live just beside the airport.

  • One of these planes just crashed in New York and killed everybody on it. And one person on the ground.

  • I think Scandinavian Airlines System, removed the Bombardier Dash-8 Q300/Q400 in their fleet...Maybe they should have tried ATR72-500, I sit comfortably on ATR72-500 than the Qseries

  • Was it a known possibility before the landing that the gear may fail? if they did know they probably should have pulled all the gear up and did a belly skid, just to keep it straight, although this plane looks like it could lean one way or the other cause the wings are high.

  • In most emergency checklists it clearly states: landing with one main landing gear defective - DO NOT ATTEMPT.

In this case they knew the gear would fail, so I have no clue why they did not opt for a belly landing. Also, in case of gear malfunctions you want to shut down the engines upon touch down, feather them so to speak and shut down the fuel supply. I did not see it in this case either. 25 sec for the engines to stop is way too long.

  • Yep, i have to say I agree.

  • The end was very nasty how the plane veered of the runway

  • d'oh

    nasty

  • Funny, it was'nt SAS's fault, it was the main right landing gear's...

  • i was in it i was being pressed of somethng my brother says o we gonna die

i said no we just land

    and the GUNK

  • never shall i fly airplane again!

    i was in it!

  • so, did the right strut leak all of it's fluid out in flight or something?

  • scuba, they found dirt and bits of plastic tape in the fluid. That points to one place, the service crew who must be stupid not to do a proper job keeping things clean.

  • SAS has decided that protesting who is at fault in this matter was hurting the airline way too much as the problems were a maintenance problem with dirty hydraulic fluid and other bits of plastic in the fluid. On March 10, 2008, they dropped any complaints and ordered 27 new bombardier planes. The dollar value of these planes is $880 and with options could total $1.2 billion. There is no truth to the rumour that the maintenance people have been sent to Siberia. Too bad, it's what they deserve.

  • In swedish newspapers/radio today: "Canadian airplane manufacturer Bombardier has agreed to pay 160 million dollars to Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) in compensation for cancelled flights due to construction faults."

  • TGBY,yes i know what the media reports are as they were also reported here in Toronto where they build the Q400. SAS pretends they are getting the $160 million so they don't loose face but in reality, they get nothing and they sure don't get a discount of $160 million off the price of the new planes. As a correction, if all options were taken, the price is $1.75 billion not the $1.2 billion i mentioned before. Note that EWR & JFK have cut back on the # of flights during rush hour, so the Q400>

  • > so Porter Airlines Q400's arranged permission to land on the cross runways during busy times. These are the connecting portions of the airport normally used to move aircraft on the ground from takeoff runway to terminal & vice versa. Since a Q400, fully loaded only needs 2,200 feet to takeoff, Porter airlines and any others with the Q400, will save time and money on fuel when flying in or out of EWR, Newark's Liberty airport. Porter starts to fly March 31 to EWR from Toronto Island airport.

  • SAS will get discount on new airplanes.

  • i think this video isn't happy

  • "Another happy landing"

  • wtf was wrong with that right wheel?Oo

  • How do the CRJ's have bad quality? Granted that I have a biased opinion, as a Bombardier engineer (for Learjet), but all too often people "gauge" the quality of an aircraft based on brand size. This is probably an unfair comparison, but I would take a CRJ or a Dash-8/Q400 over an A380 any day.

  • The landing gear didn't collape. It simple wasn't LOCKED on the right.

    Wasn't aircrafts fault.

  • Very well done landing.

  • Eh? What are you saying? That when the landing gear did not extend and lock as it was supposed to, the pilots/passengers/UFO's are to blame?

It was a mechanical failure in the landing gear. Now whose "fault" that is can be discussed but it most certainly was not pilot error.

  • The inquiry into the crash determined that GREMLINS had been using the O-rings to seal their crackpipes. It's not the fault of the aircraft, nor the pilots. The gremlins apparently stow away in the luggage, so probably the luggage crew is to blame.

  • ?

If the gear didn`t collapse, why did it fall all the way then?

  • hvor har du fået video klippet fra?

  • Bombardier claim systematically that there is nothing wrong on their side. Well, what the hell is it? Sabotage? Bad maintenance? I don't think so. Sikorsky is doing the same: an S-76 went deep down the sea just outside Tallinn on it's way to Helsinki. 14 casualties. And no, it's not their fault, even though the steering system servo was found to be faulty.

  • It's a real shame that this happened; I really like the dash 8. The 100 and 300 series I know are tanks, and they're so nice to be a rampy for one. But I agree, Bombardier is definitely involved with these gear problems. Their CRJ 100 and 200 jets are proof of how poor quality they use in their aircraft. It's too bad they had to ruin such a favorited, reliable plane such as the Dash 8.

  • You are soooo ignorant. Bombardier do not make their landing gear, Goodrich does, just as they do the landing gears for boeing, airbus, raytheon and saab. Hell they even make the landing gear of the space shuttles.... Bombardier choose Goodrich because of their reputation, now Goodrich have some serious issue with the landing gear, why would Bombardier be consider the guilty one??? They just bolt the damn thing in place, just like every other aircraft makers...

  • it has recieved the nickname "the penguin" now according now due to the fact that it´s better of on the ground than in the air.

  • You mean the same Saab 2000 that carries half the number of passengers and is less fuel efficient?? Yes, i bet they wish you were head of precurement...

  • Today SAS Group decided to get rid of its entire fleet of 28 Dash 8 Q400.

I sure hope they sell them all as fireplane rebuilds (yes - it's actually an excellent fireplane) Sure don't hope any more passengers will fly with them.

  • @Brusspringsteen It was since proven that these accidents were the result of shoddy maintenance on the part of the airlines.

  • Just for the records - recent Dash8/Q400 events:

13 March 2007, ANA flight 1603 crash - nosewheel unfolding problem

9 September 2007, SK1209 crash - right side landing gear collapse

12 September 2007, SK2748 crash - right side landing gear collapse

21 September 2007, Ausburg Airways crash - nosewheel unfolding problem

27 October 2007, SK2867 crash - right side landing gear collapse

  • I dont really know but so many accidents happened - looks like sabotage.. Poor SAS, so what now. What instead of Dash 8 ? ATR 72 ? Or Canadair regional jets ?

  • @HanzPrague: If I had to guess, I would guess the E-170. The ATR has a lower maximum range (about 900nm comapred to the Q400's 1300nm), and I doubt that SAS will want to buy any more airframes from Bombardier, ao the CRJ would be out of the question. The E-170 has a higher maximum range then the Q400 with the same passenger load.

  • SAS' Dash8/Q400 flights have been on the wings now for three weeks - and as of today October 27, 2007 we have the exact same accident at Copenhagen Airport.

At an early stage, SAS decided to replace all actuators, whether they showed signs of corrosion or not.

So it can't be corrosion - perhaps construction failure?

  • Joplin1977: Lucky, lucky, lucky you!

    A small update:

    2007-10-03

    SAS returns Dash8/Q400 to traffic

Following an extensive inspection program and parts replacement, SAS is now returning Dash8/Q400 aircraft to traffic. SAS chose to ground the entire Q400 fleet following two accidents, in Aalborg on September 9 and Vilnius on September 12, to replace parts identified as the cause of the accidents. This involved an actuator in the main landing gear that was affected by corrosion.

  • Hey I remenber that, we heard a lot because this plane is a bombardier!! I really hope no body was hurt...

  • joplin1977 i dondt think so bud if you was on that plane so tell me when it did happend becurse i did saw the crash in aalbord (denmark) so i want an anwsver !

  • The landing gear on the right side of the plane dropped, but did not lock. I could see it from my seat, 18F. They tried to fix the problem but couldn't get a green light, which indicates that the gear is working properly. So we circled to burn off some fuel, and then we braced for landing with our hands locked over our heads. After the plane stopped, we evacuated and ran towards the emergency crews.

If you're going to be a douchebag, at least learn how to write properly.

  • OMG! Hope you are OK.

  • I was in that plane, on a business trip to Aalborg. I didn't realize that the landing gear didn't collapse right away until I saw this footage. I've never been so afraid in my whole life! Walked away with no injuries, though. : )

  • yes sry I dondt write so god

  • he shoudld landing whith gears up!

    sorry for my bad english.

  • Why would he had landed gears up? The problem was that the landing gear didn't lock and when landing it could have locked but it didn't....

  • if the gear could lock up..ok

    it´s hard to decide.

  • The last press release regarding the SK2748 was the second accident with a Dash-8 from the SAS fleet within just three days.

    SK2748 crashed on Sept 12, 2007

    SK1209 crashed on Sept 09, 2007

Both of them crashed due to a main landing gear collapse during landing.

  • Scandinavian Airlines regrets to confirm that one of its aircraft, a Dash 8-400 (Q400) with flight number SK2748 from Copenhagen to Palanga (Lithuania) has been involved in an accident. The aircraft experienced technical difficulties and the crew decided to divert to Vilnius Airport (Lithuania) where the accident occurred at 01:36 hrs local time today.

We can confirm that there are 48 passengers and 4 crew onboard. All passengers were evacuated after landing and no injuries are reported.

  • A team of specially trained SAS personnel is currently on its way to Vilnius to assist all passengers and crew.

The Canadian manufacturer of Dash 8-400, Bombardier, is in the process of developing an inspection programme. As a precautionary measure, Bombardier is highly recommending that all aircraft worldwide of this type with 10,000 landing gear cycles or more will be grounded until the recommended inspection is carried out.

  • Scandinavian Airlines and Widerøe have already decided to ground the entire fleet of Dash 8-400 aircraft until further notice. No aircraft will be released for operations until these inspections have been carried out on all aircraft.

All tickets on Scandinavian Airlines flights booked until Sunday 16 September may be rebooked. Inquiries about rebooking shall be directed to the place of purchase.

  • Scandinavian Airlines regrets to confirm that one of its aircraft, a Dash 8-400 (Q400) with flight number SK1209 from Copenhagen to Aalborg was involved in an accident at Aalborg Airport, at 16:10 hrs local time today.

Prior to the accident problems with the aircrafts main landing gear was identified and the pilots prepared a controlled emergency landing. After landing the right main gear collapsed.

  • There where 69 passengers and 4 crew onboard and we can confirm that 5 passengers have been lightly injured during evacuation.

A team of specially-trained SAS personnel is at Aalborg Airport to provide assistance.

SK1209 is a code-share* flight with Spanair flight number JK9101, BMI flight number BD3923 and Lufthansa flight number LH6002.

The Danish Accident Investigation Board will investigate the accident. Scandinavian Airlines continues its operations as scheduled.
