Doreen Welch opened the rear door and blamed it on a passenger....I don't have a problem with her mistake, just with the lie...Certainly opening the rear door accelerated the sinking of the plane. Then she talks about her deep gashes etc....I can't imagine anyone wants to work with her

@tjenk712 Wrong, tjenik712!! The witness who was supposedly going to testify that Doreen Welch opened the rear emergency exit, in fact, testified under oath that Doreen was NOT the woman who opened the emergency exit.

The truth is that it is historically (I have worked closely with the NTSB and FAA in the past) In the event of an emergency in which the flight crew is NOT incapacitated (as in this case) THE FLIGHT CREW ISSUES ORDERS AND PERFORMS KEY FUNCTIONS SUCH AS OPENING DOORS) This is done to ensure that the slides are in automatic position to ensure safe egress of passenger

@tjenk712 right. but the doors must be assessed , not because the captain orders evacuation all doors must be opened . if her door was near water level .fire or debris .the flight attendant must block that door and shout commands to proceed to other doors

@Outlaw1257 Welch was seated in the jump seat next to the door.In early testimony she claimed she ".did not remember if she ever touched or opened the door"(she had to get her story straight) initial testimony of 2 passengers was that SHE DID.The NTSB then went to focus on on witness who had the best recollection. But as time went on and this turned out not to have caused any death or injury(just a stupid mistake)the witness "changed" their testimony with passive acceptance by the investigator

In all seriousness, Needsdecaf, this is not Katie Couric at her best. Methinks that assigning her this project wasn't a good cal by the producers of "60 Minutes".The irony here is that this was a very dramatic, riveting story, and while Katie seemed intent upon illuminating the drama of the situation, the crew of Cactus 1549 were focused, and calm...... not the behavior or temperament that many people might expect.

And it was a bit more violent than up front... now what is ungrateful about that? She saved lives as well... the entire crew did... it was teamwork... not the pilot alone... many people in the back would have drowned if it would not have been for Doreen. Think about that! A closer look to reality. Better than the cool magical heroic story we're used to hear and see in the medias... More human. It shows how all the crew did a great job and it's not focusing only on one character to make him become a symbol...It shows how traumatic an incident like this could be even if this is an "happy ending"... it changed their life...
