There is no fight competition with the sticks, it's choreography (dance). The two fighters are partners. The referee decide the most beautiful and spectacular choreography.

They use the sticks because traditional 19th century Savate was designed to be a self defence art and Gentlemen of the day used to carry canes, this was incorporated into the fighting style along with the kickboxing type skills.

@maxma3 its a regular stick, probably wooden. there is a part of savate wich uses sticks and stick techniques.

You have savate-french boxing and canne de combat-cane fighting. You can combine them to add savate kicks into canne de combat, result is called canne chausson. I learn both french boxing and canne, both awesome sports.

might be... but I'd say that if you don't train long enough, it doesn't matter. Oh and btw... muay thai matches don't last too long.Muay thai wasn't designed to defend yourself simply. As far as I'm able to judge (although I may be mistaken) people doing muay thai are going for the kill... (more or less...) Savate looks like an art to defend yourself (to me)

This is why Savate survives and American Kickboxing (not Thai Boxing) went the way of the dodo in the 1980s. This is all about kicking, while in the US some were happy with doing the mandatory 13 kicks per round. Too bad, with Bill Wallace and Benny The Jet we had some real talent.

Savate were created by the sailors of Marseille. Before the French révolution, non-noble people in France were not allowed to carry weapons. That is why they have developed techniques to combat bare hand or whith stick (canne de combat as in this vid).
