The boy wasn't really meant to die in this. He was just the pawn to lure his dad into the house. His crime wasn't really that severe. Jigsaw knew this so he sent in Amanda( his apprentice ) to make sure he didn't die and to be a helpful hand to everyone else in acquiring the needles.
