One of the greatest pianist of the 20th Century, really one of kind.... one could agree or not with some of her performances, but you'll never be disapointed... At 8.01 and on she is brillant!!!!
I actually went this concert at Tokyo NHK hall with my wife and my parents. All of us were so much moved by her so graceful and passionate performance. I was so much moved into tears...I really love her play and deeply respect her !
Martha undoubtedly runs one of the great performances, but in this concert, as well as waltzes Op 64, and the Polonaise N ° 6, the king is Rafal Blechacz ...
I'm afraid to give criticism on her so excellent, poetically moving playing. She is painting picture like a true artist and the various sections flow well together. One can just relax on the judging and listen to her artistic world.
This rendition is good but not spectacular. Argerich's push-pull rubato at times brings out a superficial attitude to this piece. She makes some mistakes with notes - maybe she is not in top form. She struggles in some passages. Her staccato is not very Chopinesque and she is at times not in sync.
My favorite for this piece is Perahia, Gilels, Vasary. Also Kissin plays this well.
@gbshalev To be absolutely honest, it would be hard to say that this would be a typically Chopinesqu piece of music anyway: it is certainly not as Chopinesque as the bulk of his piano solo works.
It possesses more 'push' and force/compulsion in many places than most of his works.

This coming July, from the 23rd to the 31st, the beautiful medieval Tuscan village of Pietrasanta will host the IV edition of "Pietrasanta in Concerto".
Nine exhilarating nights in the intimate cloister of Sant' Agostino where enjoy the music of leading artists such as Martha Argerich, Vadim Repin, and Boris Berezovsky, and the opening piano duo of Itamar Golan and Bishara Harouni!

This performance moved me inside so much that i cried. my parents were both prof musicians so that part of me just got into it. i loved watching the conductor. i always wanted to conduct symphonies.. the musicians, all, were very into their parts...martha was phenomenal. her touch was right on when it was to be loud, then soft. it is such an emotional piece. i worshipped this Palm Sunday morning listening to this beautiful gift of music from God that He gave to each one on the stage. BRAVO!
hey guys, what do you guys think is harder, chopin's e minor concerto (1st mvt), or rachmaninoff 3rd piano concerto (1st mvt)
honestly i think chopin's is harder . . . i dunno because i have to pick one and i don't know what to choose, but i like rachmaninoff's way more . . .
I think Argerich is known for more than her performances. She's really a personality. She's beautiful, elegant and enigmatic. All these contributed to her fame. Just a thought.
The performance is lovely, but the recording sounds too bright.

I think that although her technique is excellent, and her playing overall is flawless, she should be more strict with her rubato, maybe stick with what Chopin wrote a little more. I am learning this too though, so it's good to see how others express themselves in this piece :]
I thought that I would never care to hear this concerto again NEVER again...... under the fingers of Argerich it takes on new life and beauty......... You comments are really beyond me they slay me well eveyone is entitled to his or her opinion........ this rendition is stunninly gorgeous,,,,, that of Dinu Lipatti pales in comparision
Why would you never care to hear this concerto again? It's probably one of the most refined pieces of Chopin void of his usual experimental etude scales but rather melodic in essence with amazing virtiuosity
VIVA ARGERICH!!!! I am drunk from hearing that gorgeous 2nd subject....never have I heard it played with such emotion and expressivity. This is an individualistic performance which illuminates so much beauty and feeling that is in the music, the real Romanticism. It may not be the more classic and restrained approach to this piece (like say, Novaes or Pires), but there is so much that is wonderful in her playing....she's so absorbed in the music, & technical difficulties are 0 for her-GENIUS!
Oh my god, is he her ex-husband?... he reminds me to him (if he´s not...) when she played the Tchaikovsky concerto... When she wore a purple dress... (Sorry my bad english... But I don´t use "OMG" instead of the hole thing XD... ja, I´m just kidding)
This is the most emotionally, spiritually and technically perfect ideal of this Chopin Concerto....Martha is immortalized by this rendition. I could feel an entire lifetime evolve before my eyes. No, I should say that the force of creation, that is nature in all its glory and intangible moods is portrayed here.
Martha you bring me to a place deep in the recesses of my soul, and give me a reason for my existence. Life is indeed a miracle.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Appreciating her does not mean "give me a reason for my existence." You know how absurd that is? You didn't bring about your own and existence and clearly Martha didn't, so you should be paying worship and honor to your Creator not a piano player who is just as mortal as you are. That's why the comment was retarded. And nature is not a force of creation; it's not an efficient cause so don't give it such credit.
You take my comments out of context and use them in a literal sense, instead of in the spiritual sense they were intended. Please dont trouble yourself to reply, it is not necessary. You are free to think what ever you wish.
Marliben is clearly taking everything very seriously. But FerozalLaBonne, if you don't want people to bash your comments, try to say sensible things. Because this "give me a reason for my existence" does sound a bit silly. Do you mean that it adds something to your existence? Art can sometimes reveal something about life to you that adds to your existence, yes.
hola una pregunta, sobre el minuto 9:14, pueden ver q es lo q agarra con la mano derecha??? acaso es un pucho? o es un pañuelo?? solo pa saber nomas, asi de curioso...
totally agree with you.But don't forget other incredible pianist on the past, when Mrs Argerich was still student..:-) (personal opinion) anyway,Martha forever!
No I dont think anyone will forget the pianist's of the past their music will alway's live on (Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Beethoven etc) who could forget. One more thing no matter how old you become their's alot youve learned but alot you havent learned so in a sense you will alway's be a student but one thing she had that cannot be taught or learned is the passion and love and is what seperate's every artist.
I had the great opportunity to listen to this concert performed by Her-very-self at the National Opera Theatre in Warsaw some 7 years ago (our Philharmonic Concert Hall was too small to house all people who wanted to take part), this was the most powerful musical experience i've ever had. It was impossible to get the tickets I & my friends had to use a clever and not too legal way to get there;] there were no seats left so we were standing during the whole concert as if we were hypnotised...!
It's true she pushes it a lot, and it *occasionally* slips on the "too much" side. But she has the guts to take risks. = sometimes it works, sometimes in does not. = she is a human after all...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It is so distorted - the rhythms pulled so lopsided and what I consider to be a like soap opera version of Shakespeare. Exaggeration is to my mind never a component of the greatest art. Chopin's art is one I hold to be simple, magical, and always expressed in natural emotions - and to use the phrase of my great teacher -- always singing.
You actually think that it's distorted??? haven't you noticed how Argerich does not only play music with perfection and magnificent technique but when you listen to her, you feel like if she's talking through the music she's playing, her emotions are in her performance. I really do believe that you should reconsider Argerich's interpretation and watch out for all the die-hard Argerich fans.
prefer Ohlson or zimmerman -this is too rubato and eratic/manic.

It's true she pushes it a lot, and it *occasionally* slips on the "too much" side. But she has the guts to take risks. = sometimes it works, sometimes in does not. = she is a human after all...

Then you would really not like to hear Yundi Li's playing of this.

Don't get me wrong, she is a magnificent pianist, but she is playing it the way she wants, and not what Chopin wrote
