Im not sure if this would work but.. couldnt you just put a cactus where the spiders/creepers drop so it does extra damage when they land? instead of lowering the platform.. cause it would be mad annoying to go down the ladder to get items every single time..

it probably too late, but it you decided to work through the night, instead of sleeping through it, you would have many more mobs spawn than just the odd 5 that were spawnin in the wee small hours of the morning ;P afcourse this doesnt really matter if you have a roof on it, but even then, you would have a constant stream of mobs for much longer

Seeds where the melons need to grow, running back up the water source before placing any type of platform to catch the mobs after you sleep, collecting a water source instead of covering it up when you have an unlimited amount, ill continue to add as I continue to watch.
