I'm surprised Mexicans got offended about Top Gear's current Mexican comments as opposed to their previous comment about British investors loaning money to Mexicans who couldn't pay them back. (They were testing the Chevy Aveo, Proton Satria Neo, and the Perodua Miivy.)

@lamouchemorte It's not an image problem, it's a reality problem. Mexico is a failed state overrun by gangs and cartels, and one of the most dangerous places in the world. It has very little economy apart from drugs. That's why people think little of Mexicans, because similarly to Belgium, it's now a non-country. Shouting at top gear won't fix problems with your country. When the population stops sucking up to the cartels you might get some respect back.

I think you touched on a lot of peripheral points about why that segment of Top Gear was so offensive, but what it really comes down to is the distinction between nationality and ethnicity.  Of course Top Gear will claim that it is an equal opportunity offender, citing such lampooned nationalities like Germans, Italians, French, etc. But all of those nations have been conquerors at some point in history. Mexico has been disputed land and you simply do not make fun of the historically oppressed
