maybe the reason they can't isolate an environmental factor is because the factor was only there for a very small window of time and was then removed.
What if these girls were just a test-run? What if someone is planning to do the same thing on a larger scale, later, but wanted to test it on a small group, first, in a small town? What if the girls were exposed to something that was later removed, so it can't be found???
