Anyone can build a better pc than aleinware mainly because you dont need a good case or a good motherboard to get better performance. Basic alienwares come with a sli/crossfire motherboard that usually has 3 to 4 pci e slots and the case is obviously more expensive and way better quality than any others.

Yes you can change fan directions easily, at least in the Alienware case and most cases. The AW case I just pressed 2 tabs to push out the bracket, snapped the fan out of the bracket, and turned it around, then snapped the bracket back in the fan slot. Took less than a minute, and no tools required. I will have to look at my Dell (though there are so many cases) to see how easy it is. It may require removing some screws, but should still be easy.

Really...that's pretty reasonable $200 - $300.  I didn't know you could fit an entire computer system from another computer into this case. Pretty cool.

Everything in the Alineware case is standard form ATX. Nothing exclusive to Alienware/Dell in it to prevent you from building your dream PC in it. And sorry for the doule-ish post, I didnt see it post the first time. I hope to have some video once my 980x arrives and I can get the thing together.

One other thing. If you do decide to get the case - I noticed one thing today. The hard drive cooling fan was put in backwards as to push air out of the system, instead drawing of cool air into the system over the hard drives. This was an easy 2 minute fix, but it could have been very bad if left un noticed. I am guessing that this could even happen and has happened in the full factory built systems. Anyone with an Alienware case from any source should check all your fan directions.

You CAN buy the cases separately. Check Ebay, Brand new for 200-300. AW put a lot of these older model cases up for sale around the time they started using their newer design. This is still a great case imo, and I did get one for my custom PC. I like the Antec cases but could not find a case anywhere deep enough for my SLI without messing up the front bay configuration. From past experience with AW, I ordered one of these because I KNOW there was lots of room. My wife now has the Antec.

Check eBay. You can get this older model (still great design) new from $200-$300. I used an Antec case but it just was not deep enough for my SLI 285GTX setup. From my experience with AW, I ordered one of these up because I KNOW there is plenty of room for what I need and it is still a very nice case. Not the cheapest out there but you will not be disapointed. Once my i7 980x shows up I will be putting the thing together. Alienware sold some of these older models when the newer arrived.

Too bad you can't customize or even know what hardware you're going to get. Go and customize one and I assure you that you don't know what brand of stuff you're going to get.
