I have always said that I HATE when TV shows put songs right in the middle of the story, but with the Andy Giffith show I love it! They really had some beautiful music on that show!!!
Yes, he's Jack Prince. He was one of the last big band singers. Sang with Henry Bussey 1937, and Harry James in 1962. He also was the voice for Barney in the episode, "Barney sings with the Choir."
Here's his last television appearance on TNN's "Nashville Now!" in September of 1991, which was a reunion of many of "The Andy Griffith Show" cast members. Prince received a standing ovation for the two songs he sang.
I thought this was Dan Blocker too. Jack Prince previously appeared on Johnny Carson's short-lived CBS series. Ditto for Olan Soule' aka John Masters and one-time TAGS guest star Jamie Farr. Prince shared his experiences with this episode in the book Mayberry 101. Frank Sinatra recorded this song on his album A Swingin' Affair.
@Henbot Rafe hollister was a character on The Andy Griffith Shw. The guy playing him is Jack Prince. Unfortunately the only information on him is with the Andy Griffith Show. There was a mention that he performed on an early kingston Trio album but there is no actual credit for it so not sure about it
@AMSOMmp man this guys amazing. Jack Prince just leads me to some footballer, surely if this is his voice must of done at least one album. Heard a lot of versions but this is my favorite.
Actor. Born Jack Trevathian Upchurch, he was trained in singing at an early age and appeared on many Broadway musicals in the early 1950s. In 1954, he broke into the television scene singing on "The Colgate Comedy Hour" and later on the Johnny Carson Show". His other TV credits include "The Buick-Berle Show", "The Danny Thomas Show", "Nashville Now!" and was most remembered for his role as Rafe Hollister on "The Andy Griffith Show".
Jack Prince, born John Upchurch in Shreveport, Louisiana on January 19,1920, trained to be a singer from an early age. Perhaps the height, and certainly the most visible point, of his career as a vocalist was singing on The Johnny Carson Show in 1955.
that's my dad! andy and he were in 'destry rides again' on broadway, and andy invited him to do some episodes later in his career. jack prince was in 5 episodes, playing different roles in all but 2 as rafe, i think
@jujujoint Yep, most folks don't know that. He also played Ben Sewell (moonshiner) and Luke Rainier (refused to get a tetanus shot.) They were all the same character really, just with different names. :) He had one of the great lines on Andy Griffith (after shooting at Andy for getting near his still operation), "Andy is that you? I thought you was the law."
@57mab unfortunately, none have ever surfaced. i even went rifling thru my aunt's attic (his sister, the matriarch of his side of our family). we used to have a couple of old 78 singles he self-produced (in one of those record-yourself type studios that used to be common in the 50s). THEY were a hoot and a half!! lol but sadly they, with all of the other memorabilia, have gone missing over the years. he was a pretty serious person around me, but i heard some stories... ;-)
Does anyone know if Andy and Jack Prince made a single of this song "Look up that lonesome road"? Andy did a beautiful job playing. I always think of my daddy when I watch Andy because we were raised on the same morals and principals as Andy showed on the show. My dad also loved the darlins bluegrass. Me to. My mom has went home from her faithful years living for God and my dad and my sisters and daughter are still singing in church and this is the kind of music we sing.
My comment didn't post before, so here goes. This song was sung as the finale of the 1929 film "Show Boat", instead of "Ol' Man River". The 1929 film was a very badly put together part-talkie, based more on Edna Ferber's novel than on the famous musical, but it did use songs from the show, among them "Ol' Man River", which was sung earlier.
how do you know? My reason for saying he isn't playing is because as a player myself -i watch his hands -they arent forming the chords you are hearing or moving enough, Inly at the end on the last chord -and even then its not right. -. 2. the person playing has great Jazz touch and feel a major pro. Andy played bluegrass and other rythym guitar -but not this Jazz.
I play too, and I really don't see where you're seeing that... His hand definitely seems to be moving along to me. And this isn't exactly what I would consider Jazz for this time, anyway...
I have always loved this episode and particularly Rafe's soulful singing. I've always wanted to know more about him but haven't found much- I understand he sang professionally, even on broadway, and sang on a show hosted by Johnny Carson? I wonder if any other recordings of him are available besides this TAGS episode. He had a remarkable voice. If any one has an info on him I'd be glad to hear it.
no perhaps you are thinking of Roy Clark

Look down,look down
That lonesome road
Before you travel on
Look up,look up
And seek your maker
Before Gabriel blows his horn
Weary toting,such a load
Trudging down,that lonesome road

The question was brought up whether Andy is really playing the guitar? Yes it was him. In several episodes he plays. He made so many albums himself.
