  • This idiot is an overpaid useless moron. I have forgot more about locomotives and never been in one but once than this guy will ever know. Smokestacks? (face palm)

  • Smoke stack's? lol damn, that shows your intelligence. Smoke stack's haven't been used since the steam era. Ever heard of exhaust stack?

  • "Appearancewise" Gensets look like EMD switchers with a nose. They may be efficient, and good looks are secondary for an industrial workhorse, but still, to me they're rather homely looking.

  • @ACLTony similar to the ugly rs-3? what practical use would this have? this wouldnt make for a good road engine 2100 hp

  • @lostsomewhereinhere- Actually, it is a good road engine. UP has almost 200 Gensets in several forms. About half of those units are Rail Power RP20GE's with 2,000 hp each. Just about all of them went down to Texas, and UP is very happy with them. They do just about everything except road freights and road locals.

Another third of UP's gensets are 3GS21B's, like CSX 1300. Nearly all of them are in California, and UP makes them do nearly everything.

    And BTW, EMD's popular GP38-2 had 2,000hp.

  • i do bleieve union pacific was the first company to produce the genset units i could be wrong though nice video :)

  • thats a sick locomotive i wanna drive that

  • Love those new GenSet locomotives. Wish they could run in Oregon:(

  • I'm a Machinist, and my railroad tried two GenSet locomotives from two different companies. We had them both for about two months for demo's. Each one failed horribly. One would just shut down once you started your pull. The other had one problem after another. This experience made us stick with our MP15 and fit them all with AESS to help with fuel. Not saying these are a bad idea, but they need a lot of work to become practical. They are too delicate for the switching industry as of yet.

  • @Manokimo Sound like all that's need to fix that is a manual switch to turn the motors on and off when need. Have the computer say shut down or start up instead of doing it automatic.

  • ver nice.

  • very nice looking switcher..anyone know what kind of horn?

  • If i can remember,K3La

  • thanks

  • but is the name for this engine?

  • Dennis is the Sr.RFE out of Chicago for the Great Lakes Division - one of the few "Railroad Men " left on CSX.

  • what does GENset mean

  • GENerator set.

But what would one use such a locomotive for? Is it the same as any other rail traffic loco, or is it just to gererate electricity?

  • i think it's just a road switcher

  • It's a switching locomotive, it just uses a lot less fuel. It wouldn't be used to pull long trains, but it's great for working in a yard or making local freight deliveries.

  • The reason it's called Genset is that it uses 3 small diesel engine/generator combinations to power the axle-mounted electric traction motors instead of the traditional single huge diesel engine and generator.

  • Thanks for that. I guess it's what we in Engand would call a yard shunter.

  • I maybe wrong but I think ut means Generation Set. Like next generation set.

  • i mean what is the mechanical name, like ES40

  • If you mean model designation, this is a 3GS21B

  • Goog video, Thanks for sharing!

  • cool looking engine.

  • That thing looks like a cross between a GP40-2 and an MP15AC.

  • An MP15AC is one of the locomotive types that this locomotive (3GS21B) would replace. In fact most of them are made using remanufactured trucks from trade-in locomotives such as MP15s. All those old switchers with 1500-2000 horsepower can be replaced with something that uses less fuel and puts out less emissions.

  • Nice video.

I like the plug and play engines.

  • Very cool, I want one! How much?

  • Hey, awesome video! I'd like to see locomotives like that over here;)

  • id love to have a set of those lights

  • Awesome!

  • Wow thats so awesome that CSX ordered these brand new Genset locomotive. I want them to order more of these and use them for switching rather than EMD units. GE units are more fuel efficent and are better than EMD units. You get a better view of whats going on wow. I saw some brand new ones in August that UP had and I didn't know much about them now I do. ***** and favorite.

  • @CSXRP- I don't have any data to support or fight your claim about GE vs. EMD, but all these new gensets are NOT made by GE or EMD. There are several different companies that make theses gensets. In fact, many of the gensets (espescially UP's) are rebuilt from older EMD or GE frames. (For example, UPY 2668 is an ex-MP B23-7). CSX 1300 is an NRE (National Rail Equipment) 3GS21B locomotive.

  • @UPRR11 Ok cool :) fighting is stupid no need to fight over what you like better weather its EMD or GE. :)

  • all of that is great but how many are being built. Does CSX plan to replace most of their power with these engines or other low emmision models? I love how railroads move freight more efficiently but I always see corporations buy or make one or two of these environmentally friendly things, show you on the tv and make themselves look great and progressive. Anyway, just my two cents.

  • I work for the company in Mt Vernon, Illinois where these are built. Since December 2006, approximately 200 of these locomotives have been built for various comapnies from UP to CN, BNSF to CSX.

  • National Railway Equipment Co

  • lot better than my train yard SD 70s and GP38s

  • that was awesome.csx is my favorite railroad.

  • I live in Dearborn.

  • Cool!
