He made it a point to shave as little off the world record as possible, so he could continue to beat it and make more bonus money for world records. He was also an alternate on the national 4x100m relay team. It has been said he had 10.2 100m speed.
one of the things that really helps him in his vault is the fact that he keeps his leg straight during the swing phase. He doesn't ball up his legs like renaud or hooker. (altho they're both great) that way he doesnt loose any momentum during the vault
The thing nobody else is doing but his is visible when he separates from his "stick" - he pushes away from it like he jumps more up, that gives him at least 20cm more
bubka would have jumped..maybe 6.30m if he hadnt used the one cm at a time strategy. but i understand his strategy..as it meant more money for him...and more world record attempts which is good for the crowd.
@tbenjaminkx42 you are partially correct. he could have extended his hips alot more but.....bubka could make these types of mistakes and still get world records because he was so fast and strong and his takeoff was so amazing
Bubka takes 10 lefts and has amazing fundamentals. He was Mr. Consistency. When I vaulted I had the toughest time forcing myself to be patient enough to penetrate before swinging my leg to move the momentum upward. He does that amazingly. Watch his push off... it is just the final push in a series of seamless transfers of energy. Energy transfers from Vaulter to Pole to Vaulter. Too many Vaulters don't end with a final push off. I could watch this 1000 times.
first thing first no one can achieve 'max' speed from four or five lefts, dont care who you are (unless u just SLOW). olympic sprinters take about 60m to hit top speed. But on the topic of pole vault. If you hit your max speed at the instant of take off then your last step will be your largest and that is bad and you wont be able to jump up.
Some of it is getting speed but a lot of it is how you transger than speed into the pole when you plant. If you can't plant and drive the knee effectivly more speed won't do you anything.
6 is no where near enough to reach max speed. But it is probably good enough for a beginner to reach max controllable speed. It all depends on athlete, Duplantis went from 12 lefts and went 19' being only 5'6. The adverage for most high schoolers is 7 lefts

He only increased his record by a centimeter at a time. His sponsers paid him 100,000 dollars every time he broke it. It's the downfall of paid athletes. The man could have jumped 22'+ had he not been greedy. Not to mention he did a lot of steroids.
DUDE, his whole family lived in a single room. so i don't blame him for wanting to earn the family some money. and it was only $50k per record. and he was too good for steriods. if you want to talk about growth hormones, look at Joe Dial
Uh, he was a Sgt. in the Army (like most Solviet athletes). His family did not live in a single room, you are hoping for a good story that is not there.
Correct.. his father was a Sgt., but so was he. Many countries use government agencies to fund their athletes. In Italy for example, many of their track athletes are paid by the police dept and carry badges! Bubka clearly was not fighting in the Afghan conflict, but his Solviet funding came from his ceremonial military post. Clearly after the collapse of the USSR, he moved beyond that.
my coach. he said that dial still jumped like 19'7, clean, but near the end of his career, he was using. i don't know if it's true or not, but that's what i heard. dial's one of my idols, so i'd like to believe that it's not true
whats amazing about bubka is that had he not increased the WR by once cm at a time he would have jumped 6.20-6.30. also he had some monster jumps that were well over the bar when he was jumping 6m+ jumps.
I've heard it said that the Pole Vaulter is probably the most athletic person on the entire track field, because of what it takes to compete at that event. Is that true?
It's true that top-level pole-vaulters need to be extremely fit in many aspects of athleticism. For example it's required to have a speed of a sprinter (almost), a torso with great control of the abdominal external and internal muscles (almost like a gymnast) as well as strong upper extremities.
With that said, one must consider that any athlete on the absolute top-level athlete (such as Bubka, Michael Johnson, Haile Gebrselassie, Ulf Timmermann, Javier Sotomayor among others) measure up to extreme requirements of fitness in many aspects. This is what's great about athletics/track and field -- The greater athleticism together with superior technique, the greater results. Not many humans can even compare themselves to the greatest track&field-athletes. /Swedish discusthrower
abitante5: Well, that's true, the decatchletes are the best all around athlete because they do all the events. But what single event in the decathlon (and all of track) requires the most athleticism? Bingo, back at the pole vault.
they do sometimes... and i will tell you it is fucking painful.... it feels somewhat like getting hit with a baseball bat... but with more slap and more shock... plus a free-fall usually into the metal plant box or onto the track from fairly high heights... you can see why it takes a certain amount of craziness to do this sport...
bubka never used his hands to stabalize the bar in 93', he use's the power of his push so he didnt come down on it. Plus if you look at how much power he puts into that push if he did use his hands he would have knocked the bar off
I meant that he pushes himself, not the bar. Bubka never volzed in these WRs. I meant that the push he has is immense in that he thrusts himself even higher. Great athlete
...I was lucky & had a great, very technical coach in high school... also my teammate was the record holder for the league at 16' 8"... after seeing him do that, 15 feet didn't seem so daunting...
I love the way he uses his hands to force himself back when he has cleared the bar to ensure that he doesn't knock it off. A subtle move, but so important
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Actually, his last move throwing his arms back could be improved. As you do that, turn your thumbs counterclockwise. This reduces the chance the chest will be thrust forward, hitting the bar (which often happens when the arms are thrown back). I beat a world record holder, a long time ago...
if you look at how he cleared the outdooer WR though, you can see he had very little rotation going over the bar - he barely landed on his back - so while technically it's better to make an arch with your arms and keep your chest away from the bar, he needed to swing his arms a beet more to just get himself over it (in that case anyways)
