  • As Gary Puckett and Bill Medley said, 'Steve Perry' was the greatest vocalist that ever lived !!!

This was confirmed by Kasey Kasem. and Dick Clark.

  • The greatest vocalist and instrumental band that ever lived.

  • I used to play this song to my ex-wife who was having an on line affair. pissed her off so bad!

  • One of my biggest regrets is that I never saw Journey while Steve Perry was still with them. Big, big mistake!

  • @hollyawoods shut da fuck up

  • totally agree with the above statement.....but a true Steve Perry fan will recognize that even if you didnt mention it...his voice is truley amazing and his spirit soars on

  • thanks...love this song and haven't heard it in a long time!

  • Absolutely classic Journey song. Really well written and performed.

Neal Schon and Steve Perry are terrific. Also "You are my child" from this album is terrific. Nice upload lol

  • please listen to the piano ... guitar and piano, piano killed me. Is something i can't find a logical answer. Listen the piano brings me to orgasm. Sorry, but is what i feel.

  • One of Journeys best songs!

  • choice tune! thats all i have to say!

  • I used to sing this to my ex wife when she was having an on line affair. turned out to be the best thing for me...except my kids being gone and me missing over half their lives.

  • There is only the older raw , real Rock and Roll Journey sound.....1-....4 or so albums after that .............not so much

  • i would tell him anything <3

  • I love this song! Such memories from my childhood.

  • THE NEW VOCALIST OF JOURNEY (ARNEL PINEDA) IS GOOD, BUT STEVE IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  • Incredible.

  • I have a pretty good falsetto and I can hit all the notes but the last high note! I can hit it if i scream it once in a while! As you can imagine,.it is very hard to scream on key! I have been practicing with this song and Boston's "More Than a Feeling" among a couple others! I'm getting better! The fact that Steve is actually singing all this is simply amazing! Truly, one the greatest of all time!

  • just simply the the best!!! i seen this song performed live in hawaii many years ago..brings me back to my home!!!

  • I've always love the ones you don't hear. Sweet and simple, Patiently,Mother, father as well as this one the passion in his voice is chilling. They are not to be dismissed, thanks for sharing

  • makes me wanna boink

  • The ending of this song is amazing. Steve Perry will always be the voice.

  • Love this song performed by the one and only king of Journey lead vocals Mr. Steve Perry ! Wish i could have seen him live in concert in his glory years thanks for your hard work and sacrafice Steve !!!

  • Was this ever done live?

  • @mlarison85 Sadly no. Same with the song Sweet and Simple. One song with this kind of range in it that they have played live is Homemade Love.

  • ooo it's been a long long time since i last saw your face.....

  • I LOVE JOURNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I really like this video. Thanks Dave! Like I said before I really like to watch your videos. And as you can tell ,I come back over and over to listen and watch your videos.THANKS

  • man i love this song !!!! wow perry is the best singer ever

  • I love the songs they never play on the radio, this ona and one and a million, little girl. I could go on and on. I love Journey even got to see them in concert in 86..WAS AWESOME NEEDLESS TO SAY

  • wow, i haven;t heard this song since 1985. I'm crying.

  • Thanks for all of your Steve Perry/Journey videos Dave, im really enjoying them. What a fantastic band they were back then, really talented guys. All these years later and never get tired of listening to them with Steve Perry.

  • GAWD what pipes!!

  • @NoSteveNoJourney oh so goddamn funny.

  • @NoSteveNoJourney i spawned myself, bitch.

  • @NoSteveNoJourney no fuck that. your bitch ass spawned all these trolls

  • awesome song !

after seeing this video I immediatly started downloading a journey greatest hits torrent :)

  • Ohhhhh, shades of high school fights w/ forgotten boyfriends..... good times, crying nights, great song.... funny how you remember the music but not the boys... :-)

  • @NoSteveNoJourney FUCK U NOSTEVE! I and all of the trolls you spawned troll way harder than your bitchass.

  • Steve at his very best. I cant think of another song that showcases his range like this one. Whats good is that hes singing in his natural register and doesnt do the Bee Gees someones grabbing me by the **** to hit the high notes. This online version sounds washed out though. Listen to the Record and you'll see what I mean.

  • great old song thank you so much Steve Perry ....what can you say about such a talent?? Miss him ALOT....can you hear us Steve?????

  • I wish he would record again with neal and the band

  • shame the man could never sing this live... i woulda atleast liked to see him reach for it, beautifully done regardless, holding that note without intense volume.... it takes alot of things, and the best way to describe it, is talent.

  • @MakavelisShadow i don't think there's any reason to doubt he could do the last notes live. He managed to do Mother, Father live.

  • i ♥ journey but not without steve ! journey will nvr be the same without steve ! plz add me and comment on my page

  • Such great memories.......

  • ay She rest in peace now. It's the one thing I REGRET she did was prevent me from meeting the man I have been in love with since I was 12 years old. Ironically she bought me concert ticks 2 the ROR concert.

  • rescheduled 4 another date . They're going 2 B there. Unfort that date coincided w/ Some sort of import. school testing & my mom would not allow me 2 go. In retro I think she was afraid of what would/ could have happened if I met Steve Perry. Tests can ALWAYS be made up. This was a once in a lifetime, non replaceable act she prevented from happening. M

  • OH STEVE BABY TAKE ME, I'M YOURS! In my opinion,Infinity is the ultimate best! Back in 78' my older brother bought me a concert ticket to see Journey(Steve) at the Civic Arena,Pittsburgh,PA for the Infinity tour. Mom said i couldn't go! I was 12. Her words"you're not going down there with all them POT smokers there". I missed out on the concert of my life & to hear Steve. I would give anything to see my beloved Steve live & in person. I MISS YOU STEVE & YOUR HEAVENLY VOICE! STEVE PERRY 4EVER! <3

  • I feel ur pain. Although I have been to 2 Jrny concerts (Frontiers and ROR) and a Steve solo (FTLOSM) I, too was very dissed by my rents. You see I was very good friends w/ a girl who's mother was a D.J. in San Fran. We went 2 the listening party 4 ROR. Journey (All members were supposed 2 B there. The only ones I remeber meeting were Herbie Herbert & some roadies/ crew. Major disapp. The actual JRNY mmbers had bad sht happs. In retro Steve's mom dying, Neal's Porsche being marred. It was

  • Always loved this song.

  • Thus is a classic and it is awesome!

  • You're so right.....awesome classic Journey the best!.....Thanks 19dave64 for sharing.

  • It's quite awesome when you can sing so high your vioce actually can be mistaken for a guitar....

  • Look at how hot these guys are!!!! Yowza!

  • Love this classic song from Infinity days! Steve at his best!!!

  • i just love the vocal improvisation in the last part (the F5's sliding up to an A5!)

  • Awesome... Just awesome...

  • oh my god. steve perry is freakin rediculous. Do u know how hig that is? I can't even fathom trying to hit that.

  • Holy shit this is so high, like to the new journey cover this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the new journey has covered this. Deen sings of course, and on the ending the guitar does the high part and deen harmonizes lowly

  • i realized that too

  • We've all got something to hide!

  • Simply Beautiful!! The most amazing vocal ever!! Love you Steve!!

  • Dave mathews is a great band, they are however a totally different style, Journey and other super bands from this era set the president for the the Rock and Roll we hear today, every decade that precedes the other leaves it's influince, it is an endless cyle, I am 43 and I enjoy pulling out my Journey records and playng them on my old School Sony rack system, and I crank this old girl up to, she was hooked up then, and still can shake rattle my neighbors walls.

  • cool- I download but the sound isn't quite the same on a burned disc. there is no comparison to this sound- can't they digitalize this?

  • this is a beautiful song steve is the best

  • So i was arguing with a bunch of kids at my school, and they were saying (even though its a totally different genre of music) that Dave Matthews Band is better than Journey. Maybe if stuff like this was still played we could get some awareness...

  • I don't really think you can compare DMB and Journey at all, and I am an avid fan of both. Dave is super talented...he can play just about any stringed instrument out there, and he has a nice voice, but he doesn't have the vocal prowess Perry does. Journey is AOR (album oriented rock) from the arena rock era, and DMB is...I don't even know how to classify them...jazz/jam band/folk/rock? They are both very long standing bands, with completely devoted fans.

  • okay, so why don't you play it for them? there is no comparison in raw talent because all the components made journey the epic band that they were. i am a teacher as well, and I have "play your favorite songs" friday.... mine are often journey, police, led zep, paul rodgers, REM, rush and of course good blues being from texas.... go for it!

  • @JiggyJus925 Please! Dave Matthews? The level of musicianship and writing in Journey is so rare to find these days, and Dave Matthews would be the first to tell you Journey is a far better band! If you could only pick one voice from all of rock to represent, it would have to be Steve Perry. And Neil Schon's writing, his melodies and leads, are unequaled in rock. And even though they try, they can't replace Perry's vocals. Sound alikes come close, but no cigar! Perry has too much soul in him.

  • this song iz awesome. i luv steve perry!

  • Can't get enough of him.

  • love it!!!!

  • I had a guy pull up some information for me last night on his I Phone, he showed me the top 100 albums current on line, Journey's Greatest Hits #10 ! So, if that says anything about how much people are yurning for Perry's return to the studio, then I don't know what else to tell you. I know people get older, yet I have heard that his chops are still very potent, Steve Perry was always very health concious, and that went for his voice to.

  • Whoa!! First time hearing this.

  • Im so happy I listened to this today. Im glad JRNYman pointed out Steve singing the guitar part with Neal's playing. Forever Missing You Steve Perry.

  • We, the fans, dont want to see such a talent wasted!! Join the other 1300 and let Steve know how much hes wanted on the music scene again by signing the Steve Perry Sing Again petition. Go to petitiononlinecom and enter Steve Perry in the search.

Let Steve know how many people are eager to hear THE VOICE again!!!!

  • songs amazing

  • i love this song I have a CD with this song on it but it was scratched Now i can't use it

Thanks for putting this song on youtube.

  • What album was this song from, I have all of them?

  • italobamibino43-

    It's from "Infinity"

  • The Voice king SP ..Miss you ;))

  • Many people have been amazed to learn that Perry SINGS THE GUITAR PART right along with Neal (starting at 2:42 in this video). It could easily be "heard by the listener" as a second guitar playing harmonizing notes.

It becomes clear that Steve is singing at marker 3:14. A singers voice is their instrument, and Steve "plays" his voice as a tangible, physical, hold-it-in-your-hands musical instrument at songs' end.

Truly incredible! One of the greatest vocal performances in rock history.

  • @JRNYman I've never heard any singer do this other than Steve Perry,i don't think any other singer could do it.Steves vocals were & are a class above everyone elses. To pull off some of these songs live are amazing i just don't know how he did it.

  • Yup! Very nice scat-singing! Like what

David Gilmour of Pink Floyd does at the

end of Wish you were here.

  • @JRNYman OMG I didnt realize that until now, or in wheel in the sky he belts out what I thought was a guitar, Well said jrnyman simply the best!!!

  • @JRNYman YES!! YES!! ! I remember when I bought the album I noticed it immediately...listened to that part over and over and over and over again........awesome song..one of their best..(if one can say they have "bests").....

  • @JRNYman Defiantly not too many people can do what he does with his voice

  • @JRNYman Love what he does with his voice at the end of "Mother, Father", too! Thought that segment was guitar or synthesizer first time I heard it! He is an amazingly talented man, for sure. No one comes close. He is one of a kind.

  • Love this song! Takes me back to junior high!

  • Heard they had a pretty good guitar player too. Or is just a Perry page?

  • An undiscovered classic. When O' When will REAL so called classic rock radio stations start playing UNPLAYED tracks from albums that they play the same old songs.i.e "recogonized" hits from?

  • Steve's VOICE!! truly PHENOMINAL at the end!!!!!

  • Steve's voice is truly phenomenal through the whole thing!!!

  • Thanx again Dave for showing the world what they missed had they not bought the Infinity albilm. Another heavenly rendition by the worlds most awesome vocal talent. Sorry kd

  • Steve was the best rock singer ever. Range, soul, that vabrato, the falsetto, and just the pure sound of his voice is why his following is huge. Rock history will see him for what he really is---- the very best rock singer ever.

  • Maybe after Steve Walsh who is the best rock singer ever.

  • THE ♫ VOICE

    Ageless & Timeless!

    Forever in our hearts Steve!

    Kat~

  • Might be one of the top vocal performances I've heard. Amazing.

  • 3:00-3:20=AMAZING/HEAVENLY

  • LOVE this song. Memories of my youth. Still a great song. Thanks for post.

  • i love all the journey perry albums, listen to them everyday, but i got to go with FRONTIERS album as my favorite, ever song on their is so good espesh ''rubicon'' and ''troubled child''.

  • I know it has been said a million times, but Steve Perry has a beautiful voice and this song really showcases it. It is one of their best songs and as I recall it didn't get much, if any, airplay. At least not here in Virginia.

  • i agree not here in Fl. either!!!

  • Greg Rollie was the lead singer for Journey before Steve Perry came along, although most of their stuff prior to him him joining was instrumental. He came from Santana with Neal Schon to form the band. Perry came on board through the persistance of Herbie Herbert an the rest is history. This was one of my faves from Infinity!

  • This is the SONG!

  • This song has a killer melody... it stays with me for days. I go around the house singing it to the top of my lungs!

  • i like 35c4p3 best

  • Infinity, album was their best by far.

  • Timeless song, but what isnt by Journey...Journey for life!

  • OK,Philly Eagle girl,What year did Steve leave Journey?

  • Well, the first time, he really didnt leave Journey. He release his first album 'Street Talk' in 1984. But he "left" the band in 1987, and brought out his 2nd album in 1994. They they got back together in 1996, and in 1998 the rest of the band decided to move on without Steve Perry, because his hip prevented him to tour. Sooo is that enough?!?!? LoL Detroit Loins guy!!!!

  • Yes,that is good!maybe you do know what your talking about!:)

  • I love finding videos like this from true fans. There are so many Journey songs that are great, that no one knows.

  • Nothing bad comes from Journey! This one leaves me SPEECHLESS!!!!

  • OH,What do you know about Journey?LOL

  • I know A LOT about Journey!!! Wanna quiz me???? LoL!!

  • Who was the lead singer before Perry and how long was he with them?

  • CHARLESNIGRO,

Rolie was the lead (and ORIGINAL) before Perry, but there WAS another singer between the two.

Robert Fleischman was with Journey for about nine months in 1977. He sang live and recorded between the albums Next and Infinity. He wasn't on any regular albums, but was included on the Time3 box set. He co-wrote "Wheel in the Sky", "Anytime" and "Winds Of March".

    There are vids on YT:

    Journey 1977-- Robert Fleischman--Anytime

    and

    Journey 1977--Robert Fleischman--Winds of March

  • He's definitely not bad, but he's definitely NOT of Perry's caliber. He probably would not have been able to put them "over the top" success-wise in the way the Perry was able to do.

Fate stepped-in, and Journey - as well as we fans - were the winners.

  • They're different kind of singers, so it's somewhat hard to compare them. I agree with your assessment of Fleischman probably not selling as much as Perry did with the band simply because the latter had a more commercial look and a clean voice.

  • Yeah, I was asking who sang land prior to Perry in order to weed out the Journey fans from the Pineda/Perry fans. Glad to see there are true fans on YT. Fleischman is often regarded as the answer to a trivia question, but he's a great rock singer, I think that Journey would've had a lot of success with him as the lead. The way that they fired him was legendarily awful, but then again, the band was going to be fired if they didn't appeal to more commercial tastes.

  • I know A LOT about Journey!!! Wanna quiz me???? LoL!!

  • OK,PhillyEagle Girl What year did Steve leave Journey to go solo?

  • What a jewel of voice!!! Simply a beauty!!! Yes, he's THE VOICE!!!

  • Yes, A Timeless song by a Real Band! Neal has been my favorite since I can remember..So Hes my Fav.But Perry Voice sends chills....Great Posting.

  • Yes I too love this song and sometimes wake up singing it. The voice at the end matching the tempo and octave of the guitar is unbelievable. I simply think Steve Perry has one of the best most versatile voices ever.

  • I never get tired of it either. And it's been over 20 years!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yea, it's been 30 years this year!

  • I never get tired of listening to this song!

  • Ditto.

  • That voice PHENOMENAL, listen to the end!

  • Looooooooove this one.

    Oh, Steve. *swoon*

  • WOW!

Just listen to the depth and richness of the background vocals between 1:42 and 2:07.

When Steve joined the band, his singing abilities "threw down the (vocal) gauntlet", so to speak. Manager Herbie Herbert had Gregg (already an awesome singer in his own right), Neal and Ross take professional singing lessons so that they could also "step up to the plate" and do their part to enrich the band's vocal sound. The backgrounds here - and on many other songs - show they met the challenge well.

  • i just can't believe that at the end is somebody's voice(well B4 I heard Steve Perry's voice I would have no idea that was a voice, I didn't know it was possible until I heard some other Journey/Steve Perry solo music

  • This was the first Journey song I ever heard and for years, I thought it was a second guitar near the end of the song. Glad to know that I wasn't alone and without Schon's guitar, it isn't the same song.

  • Yep, Infinity is the best album ever recorded.

  • Awesome vocals.. the high notes... passionate voice.

  • My first introduction to Journey as a youngster was the Escape album, and back then I thought the high notes at the end of "Mother, Father" were LITERALLY from an instrument. It wasn't until I was a bit older that I realized it was a human voice. The same could be said for "Wheel in the Sky". Truly incredible. . .

P.S. This is my very first comment on YouTube, and I just want to thank all of you who've posted Steve Perry/Journey vids. Fabulous!

  • We welcome you to the fold with Open Arms! You wil find a lot of good people here - especially the Perry Sistas. But watch out for the JourneyLite fans of Arnel that come to "Perry-hate" on the Perry and Journey-with-Perry sites.

If you're not familiar with it, don't miss out on the solo Perry stuff, either. Just click on my name which takes you to my personal page, then click on "Playlists" at the top, then click on the Perry Album list. Great stuff!

    Again welcome!

  • Wow, what a nice, warm welcome. I was hoping someone would notice me out here. :)

Thanks for the warning. I have noticed the garbage out here (how could you not), but I tend to ignore. I'm a lover, not a fighter.

I definitely have discovered more Journey and Steve Perry material out here that I hadn't heard before. It's just wonderful. . . but I think I'm becoming a bit obsessed with "The Voice". :)

Thanks again for the kind welcome.

  • You are not alone, PerryFan2. Lots of us are discovering or rediscovering Journey with Steve or Steve alone through YouTube. Welcome to a great experience!!

  • Yeah, sad that these two artists had their rough spots. They are AMAZING when they collaborate! Imagine what they could still accomplish. But I guess it's like breaking up with a partner.

  • Man, Neal's wailing guitar and Steve's pleading vocals synchronize perfectly and add up to a perfect melody. I love Steve's solo works but in truth, without Neal's guitar mastery playing off his soaring riffs, there is something missing. Neal and Steve were musically matched so beautifully. Too bad they didn't get along very often.

  • Listening to Steve sing I am amazed at how perfectly he uses his voice as an instrument in the composition of this piece. As well as lyrically communicating his neediness, worry, pain, knowledge, desire. Compelling and haunting..... I can't hear this enough. Oh geez, it gets into your head, and just reverberates. Pathos and sparks. Unbelievable. I wonder if Steve knew the impact he had when he sang?

  • MALLI5212,

YES, exactly! Many people have been amazed to learn that Perry SINGS THE GUITAR PART right along with Neal (starting at 2:42 in this video). It could easily be "heard by the listener" as a second guitar playing harmonizing notes.

It becomes clear that Steve is singing at marker 3:14. A singers voice is their instrument, but you are spot-on in remarking how Steve plays his voice as a tangible, physical, hold-it-in-your-hands musical instrument.

    Truly incredible!

  • Hands down, Steve Perry's best vocal performance ever. I still shake my head when listening to him hit those high notes on this song. Stunning, simply stunning....

  • My favorite Journey song of all time. Saw them a couple times in the 70's. Great band. Thanks for the post.

  • An emotional song backed up with incredible vocals and music that flows with the sadness of the tune. I don't know why this song wasn't more popular.

  • Yep, I think this is definitely, without a doubt, Journey's best album! The whole thing is just a work of art! Ad yes, Neal does look yummy! I saw him many times in person, up close, in the same room with him, and he's as yummy as this pic only better!!!!!!!

  • I love this song-- in fact, the whole album start to finish! Hey, I'm the first to admit I was crushin' on Steve P. back in the day, but look at
