I got mame to work once on another pc years ago. but I can't remember what I did or even what version I was using. I'm about ready to give up. this shit is way too complicated. nothing like console emulation.

Hey thank you bro, this really helped me out alot. I downloaded Mame a couple of years ago with a friend. Ever since then I've been a huge fan of this emulator. I'll check out some of your other videos, but thanks again for this one.
@MrSupermaniac123 I agree it is complicated to an extent. But this thing emulates LOTS of different arcade machine hardware. It is made by people who give their free time to the project and release it for free. It also has been forked and the root project handed over to many different devs over a long period of time...it's become a bit disenfranchised.

@Migz4Prez There may be a chd that goes with that one. I forget but you may just have the rom and it also needs a chd (Compressed Hard Disk) for some resources

@trisclay1652 Not really extra content. Most games have different versions for different regions. There are many game mods/hacks available too. Just download the most popular version of whatever game you want and you should be fine. Only download anything else if you know what you are getting.

@12gordo1 what version are you using? If you have a new or bad rom set it might not work with an old version. Then again it could be the bios, if you dont know what bios are click my name and follow along in the where to get bios video.
I got 3500 roms that everytime i click on play rom it does nothing ,done the options-directory-browse-roms folders-ok. It found the roms but it just dont play ,there must be something im missing couse i got no idea how to get them to work
@fpvshitsonhsv hello what version of mame are you using and what rom set are you using? Also try right click on a rom that doesn't work> then click audit and see what results you get. usually if you click a rom and it looks like it starts but then goes away real quick it means your directory is screwed up. Try reinstalling mame and place your roms in the new mame's rom folder and makes sure you got ur bios, if you dont know where to get the bios click my name and watch the video. goodluck

Yup. I agree with RetroHunter and others... MAME is better than not being able to play old arcade games at all ... BUT.. Even after you run all over the internet in order to get it working properly, you come to find that ROMs for MAME become "Outdated" and a lot of the roms you assumed you'd be able to play in the beginning need to be compatible with the specific version of MAME, but this information isn't out in the open. I'm just gonna wait for another solution.
@iPROzFiction Yes, this is one of the sad facts about MAME. Emulation accuracy is the sole purpose of the MAME developers, so they often update MAME to improve emulation in various games. This of course creates a problem as newer versions of MAME may not run older romsets (and vice versa), even if the romsets worked fine with previous versions of MAME.
There are tools like clrmamepro to help with managing your MAME collection, but they're not very user friendly.

Dear bitburner. I've got a King of dragons rom - it's zipped and in "roms" folder; I've used the RomVault (I've done all things in it) and the MAME 0140 just don't find it in "Available" folder. The older MAME which doesn't have this folder finds it but it still says that the cmh images or roms are missing :( Maybe it's rom fault?The game is older than Dungeon&Dragons which worked fine from the beginning (I haven't used the RomVault) Waiting for a reply, cheers and thanks for a great job!:)

I downloaded Sonic: The Fighters for it. I put the zip for it and The BIOS pack in the rom folder. The problem is when I try to play the game, it loads a list of file names it says are missing. Whats going on?
@ChancesOnNet did it mention anything about a CHD? thats a compressed hard disk and some newer games need that too. It also could be you got a bad rom. I have posted on the comments how to use ROMVAULT to repair roms with missing files...look through the comments and you will see some step by steps i posted to others.
@MotherPunker970 What do you mean ? MAME is the emulator itself. The games are not included with the emulator, they're just read-only memory images. And YES, Strider US is available.
This used to work but now it won't recognize my rom files. I keep setting the directory to the correct folder and the damn thing won't recognize the games anymore.
@RetroHunter06 So mame sucks ass because you can't figure it out? LOL . Dont over think it and get stressed...It's not that hard...you take a Rom zip file and stick it in the roms folder audit the roms via the file menu. WaLa! Are you having trouble finding working roms? That tends to be the issue now days. I use a program to repair all my roms called ROMVAULT. Works great if thats your issue. Look through the comments I have given lots of step by steps on it. There is also a good video response

@superyoshiblast I dont think with this version of mame32 and definitely not command mame. You can try ggpo kaillera etc. Kaillera uses mame.64 and ggpo uses fbalpha I think.

@bitburner That's just it, why are there so many bad rom files online? With any other emulator, I can pretty find roms (or ISO) files anywhere and just open the emulator and load them up. MAME really isn't that easy to understand, and I feel that most people just don't know how to explain it well; They will talk about rom sets and CHD files and whatever, but what they don't understand is that a lot of people don't know what any of that is. Most of the comments on here show that.
How do bios files work? I have downloaded lots of them and put them into the roms folder and they are still zipped indervidualy. But the games still dont work? Also the bios files show up in the game selection screen! Please help! :)

@bitburner lol , sorry i didn't realize the caps lock was on! anyway the game i'm trying to load is the simpsons arcade game and it doesn't seem to want to load. in the selection of games it shows simpsons lit up in green and says theres no error. Fusion and Znes emulators work just fine but i just can't seem to load anything on mame. also i am running on an AGP motherboard with a video card that can hardly load 3D images, so i'm thinking that might be the problem. maybe you can enlighten me?

Then click find fixes then fix roms. then it should fix them.
@ASKUR1234 I downloaded from your link and threw it in my roms folder for MAME32 worked great even though the notes said it had some video issues. Are you being confused by the warning screens? just keep typing "ok" at the warning screens that are black with white text kind of like dos. I also have every Rom BIOS neogeo etc. Dont know if it factors in here but just google MAME BIOS and find a site that has them all one download should be small like 20mb or something
@ASKUR1234 you put them in the roms folder with your roms. They should all be in zip format do not unzip them. Watch out I have got roms that are a zip inside a zip and have to fix them. When you double click on the zip to check it the files should be in the root...not another folder. if so just close it...if they are in a folder....unzip is and find the folder the files are in and zip that one to fix it. Hope that helps.
@smokyacb CHD stands for Compressed Hard Disk its for games that were so large they came with roms and a hard drive.. the CHD is a copy of it. You have to find the CHD file and throw it in with your roms
@Carbon657 I wouldn't go as far as to call it shit. I think the programmers have done a great job with the resources they have. I have about 2000 working roms and about 6000 roms. Mame supports 5000+ roms out of the 6000+ out there. I would say that's pretty damn good for a non profit project. Maybe it is your Roms? @SalladSicle Propigation of bad ROMS and CHDs Google "ROMVault" it is an app that will check all your ROMs and make sure they are right and if not it downloads the needed files and fixes it.

@plusquamverbis OK ALLCAPS Capcom vs SNK is a neo geo game so google "MAME BIOS" then download the neogeo bios and stick it in your roms folder. DONT UNZIP IT CAPS MAN....that is all.
@plusquamverbis It should be a zip file (ends in .zip) or icon has a big folder with a zipper on it. It should not be just a folder with a bunch of files in it. It should be a compressed zip archive. So ROMS and BIOSes are always zip files. The only other kind of file is a CHD (Compressed Hard Disk) they are usually large and most new games use them and ROM sites don't have them you have to look on torrents for CHDs usually.

@bleakAntiquity I have been trying to find the utility I had that looked up all your roms and trys to fix them according to a md5 check or something anyway it is bad ass and of course I worked it on a "copy" of my roms folder. It looks up all the files that are missing and finds them downloads them and repaks it. BUT I CANT FIND IT >:0 If i find it I will reply again.
@bleakAntiquity I found it!!! It is called RomVault by GordonJ. Just google that. It looks up your roms and can tell if they are correct. If it is not it corrects them. It download the files it needs etc. Pretty kick ass.

Mame was better about 3 or 4 years ago because there were a lot more working roms back then, a lot of the good games now have roms missing or bad roms or the whole game has been removed all together. I searched all over the net but they all dont work. My advice to people who have many working mame games on their computer would be to keep them because if you delete them you wont be able to get all of them back again.
@Carbon657 I agree 100% I've been using it a long time. I have over 6000 roms and only about 2000 are working. This is mostly due to the many different versions and project changing hands.

I have also tried a newer version of mame that show the roms I downloaded but when i click to play it says that it's missing one or more ROM or CHD images. Can you help me?

Dear bitburner. I've got a King of dragons rom - it's zipped and in "roms" folder; I've used the RomVault (I've done all things in it) and the MAME 0140 just don't find it in "Available" folder. The older MAME which doesn't have this folder finds it but it still says that the cmh images or roms are missing :( Maybe it's rom fault?The game is older than Dungeon&Dragons which worked fine from the beginning (I haven't used the RomVault) Waiting for a reply, cheers and thanks for a great job!:)

I downloaded Sonic: The Fighters for it. I put the zip for it and The BIOS pack in the rom folder. The problem is when I try to play the game, it loads a list of file names it says are missing. Whats going on?

@ChancesOnNet did it mention anything about a CHD? thats a compressed hard disk and some newer games need that too. It also could be you got a bad rom. I have posted on the comments how to use ROMVAULT to repair roms with missing files...look through the comments and you will see some step by steps i posted to others.

@MotherPunker970 What do you mean ? MAME is the emulator itself. The games are not included with the emulator, they're just read-only memory images. And YES, Strider US is available.

Dont over think it and get stressed...It's not that hard...you take a Rom zip file and stick it in the roms folder audit the roms via the file menu. WaLa! Are you having trouble finding working roms? That tends to be the issue now days. I use a program to repair all my roms called ROMVAULT. Works great if thats your issue. Look through the comments I have given lots of step by steps on it. There is also a good video response

@superyoshiblast I dont think with this version of mame32 and definitely not command mame. You can try ggpo kaillera etc. Kaillera uses mame.64 and ggpo uses fbalpha I think.

@bitburner That's just it, why are there so many bad rom files online? With any other emulator, I can pretty find roms (or ISO) files anywhere and just open the emulator and load them up. MAME really isn't that easy to understand, and I feel that most people just don't know how to explain it well; They will talk about rom sets and CHD files and whatever, but what they don't understand is that a lot of people don't know what any of that is. Most of the comments on here show that.

How do bios files work? I have downloaded lots of them and put them into the roms folder and they are still zipped indervidualy. But the games still dont work? Also the bios files show up in the game selection screen! Please help! :)

SO I DOWNLOADED MAME AND DOWNLOADED THE GAME I WANTED TO PLAY. IT SHOWS THE ROM HIGHLIGHTED IN THE ROW AND SAYS THAT IT HAS NO ERRORS AND IS WORKING. WHEN I TRY TO LOAD THE GAME IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING. DO YOU THINK MY VIDEO CARD IS TO BLAME? OR IS IT JUST A BAD ROM FILE?

@guitarshredder6969 Oh we got a yeller...lol...well do other roms work? then it is not your video card. If they all dont work try switching between DirectDraw and Direct3D in your preferences. Is it just black ok are there white works asking you to type "OK"???

@bitburner lol , sorry i didn't realize the caps lock was on! anyway the game i'm trying to load is the simpsons arcade game and it doesn't seem to want to load. in the selection of games it shows simpsons lit up in green and says theres no error. Fusion and Znes emulators work just fine but i just can't seem to load anything on mame. also i am running on an AGP motherboard with a video card that can hardly load 3D images, so i'm thinking that might be the problem. maybe you can enlighten me?

@guitarshredder6969 You might look for and try another copy or you could Google RomVault download it and in RomVault folder put a copy of the roms you want to fix still in zip format in the RomRoot folder...remember a COPY of the rom you want to fix. Launch ROMVault. Left side click Update DAT's. After it updates then click scan roms. it may not recognize roms and want to move to sort folder that fine too click yes. Then click find fixes then fix roms. then it should fix them.

@bitburner i think the problem is a driver issue. it says it's unable to display Direct 3d. i downloaded the driver and it still doesn't work.

@ASKUR1234 I downloaded from your link and threw it in my roms folder for MAME32 worked great even though the notes said it had some video issues. Are you being confused by the warning screens? just keep typing "ok" at the warning screens that are black with white text kind of like dos. I also have every Rom BIOS neogeo etc. Dont know if it factors in here but just google MAME BIOS and find a site that has them all one download should be small like 20mb or something

@ASKUR1234 you put them in the roms folder with your roms. They should all be in zip format do not unzip them. Watch out I have got roms that are a zip inside a zip and have to fix them. When you double click on the zip to check it the files should be in the root...not another folder. if so just close it...if they are in a folder....unzip is and find the folder the files are in and zip that one to fix it. Hope that helps.

@smokyacb CHD stands for Compressed Hard Disk its for games that were so large they came with roms and a hard drive.. the CHD is a copy of it. You have to find the CHD file and throw it in with your roms

@Carbon657 I wouldn't go as far as to call it shit. I think the programmers have done a great job with the resources they have. I have about 2000 working roms and about 6000 roms. Mame supports 5000+ roms out of the 6000+ out there. I would say that's pretty damn good for a non profit project. Maybe it is your Roms? Google RomVault download it and make a copy of your roms into RomVault rom folder COPY not move and have it scan and fix them.

@SalladSicle Propigation of bad ROMS and CHDs Google "ROMVault" it is an app that will check all your ROMs and make sure they are right and if not it downloads the needed files and fixes it.

@SalladSicle after you get the mame program unziped into a directory there should be the MAME executable and a bunch of folders like "artwork" and "flyers" look for the one that says "roms" put your rom files in that folder still in zip format (do not unzip your roms) you can get roms at rom-world just google MAME ROMS

@plusquamverbis It should be a zip file (ends in .zip) or icon has a big folder with a zipper on it. It should not be just a folder with a bunch of files in it. It should be a compressed zip archive. So ROMS and BIOSes are always zip files. The only other kind of file is a CHD (Compressed Hard Disk) they are usually large and most new games use them and ROM sites don't have them you have to look on torrents for CHDs usually.

@bleakAntiquity I have been trying to find the utility I had that looked up all your roms and trys to fix them according to a md5 check or something anyway it is bad ass and of course I worked it on a "copy" of my roms folder. It looks up all the files that are missing and finds them downloads them and repaks it. BUT I CANT FIND IT >:0 If i find it I will reply again.

@bleakAntiquity I found it!!! It is called RomVault by GordonJ. Just google that. It looks up your roms and can tell if they are correct. If it is not it corrects them. It download the files it needs etc. Pretty kick ass.

Mame was better about 3 or 4 years ago because there were a lot more working roms back then, a lot of the good games now have roms missing or bad roms or the whole game has been removed all together. I searched all over the net but they all dont work. My advice to people who have many working mame games on their computer would be to keep them because if you delete them you wont be able to get all of them back again.

i need help. I have had MAME32 for a about 3 months and i have about 5 games on there but only one will work and that is jurassic park the folder name is jpark but i also have galaga carnevil and sonic the hedgehog 2, But it says a rom is missinf so i suspected that it was the neogeo bios rom so i downloaded that but it still wont do anything. Am i supposed to extract the game and put neogeo in it? a reply would be awesome thanks. :)
