i'm IN or AT the toilet ?

  • It was very helpful, thank you. could you please teach about prepositions when talking about a place as well?

  • what about places? use at or in?

  • Very helpful but how to use it when it comes to places ? This is only about time.

  • This is awesome! I hope you don't mind if I share this on our website :)

  • How about a place?

  • How about a week ??? is it "in" or is it "on"???

  • @obeagu1 It's "in" >>in a week.

  • Could anyone answer this question, please?

What if the holiday is longer than one day. For example if I had had a holiday that lasted for three days, should I say "On the holiday, I did this and that." or "In the holiday ..."?

  • @MelChikey I think it's "On the holiday, I did this and that." This sentence makes sense. The other one doesn't.

  • @MelChikey You'd say "On the holiday I did..."

  • Friday Friday!

  • I was really confused about the right prepositions to use, Thank you

  • LOL YOU EXPLAINED IT WAY BETTER THEN MY OWN TEACHER!!!! XD

  • i don't know what to say, thank you very much i really learned a lot. before i understand english but i can't speak

  • I believe the term 'in the morning' is used because the even takes place within a time frame hence the in and not on.

  • @samrox8 congratulations!! I know in English they're a lot.

I've been wanting to learn them for ages; could I please ask you for a favor? I'm sorry, I hope I don't bother... Would you be so kind to send me the whole preposition list to my mail? I'll appreciate it if you do. Thanks!

    etjjgf@live.com.mx

  • I just passed my preposition test one hundred we had to say all of them out loud witout looking

  • files has been deployed in server... or files has been deployed on server which one is correct ?

  • thanks for the vid

  • USING THIS FOR MY LANGUAGE CLASS :D I HAT STUDING SO ITS WAY EASIER TO LEARN BY YOUTUBE

  • @DKattanHD 50 years ago students had to spent hours reading books and if they didn't heed the teacher, that was very bad for them. Now in 2011...you can find almost anything in the internet. What's next?No studying at all?Would be nice i guess.

  • nice video . now i am learning english grammer , and it's really difficult .

    So i have question .

you said - at used in very specific time, and that is good , but i heard someone said - she is sitting at the table . Is he wrong or we can use it in another position?

  • Nice video. Very good presentation. Thank you mam.

  • Maybe she shouldn't have used the middle ages example because she used 'during' instead of 'in' she said, 'This happened during the middles ages.' This could be confusing for ESL students.

  • heý_í_fÈél_sÓ_lõNelY_tÕDÅÿ

  • thanks a lot

  • I always get confuse with "in" and "on" :P

  • hi rebecca, what if i want to use it in front of "youtube" , is it in, on or at youtube

  • if anybody practice each section in english with me add me in my skype id

    sajjadhellokhankhan

  • thanks. best video

  • Haha the horns at 3:00

  • to be honest, im not good in english. so, i just wana know why you put "s" on monday? im talking about the "mondays"

please, someone answer me. thank you :D

  • @hotguylover619 "on Mondays" (with "s") means "every Monday", but "on Monday" (no "s") means either the previous Monday or the next Monday, depending on the tense of the main verb (e.g. "On Monday I was at home." Past tense "was" means the previous Monday. "On Monday I will be home"; future tense "will be" means the next Monday.) But "On Mondays, I am home" or "I am home on Mondays" means "Every Monday I am home."

Hope that helps--any other questions on English usage, just ask.

  • I will go in School or I will go at School? lol -.-

  • @Blad771 i will go to school...no need for at ,in or on

  • good

  • Microwave sound back the video =D

  • لبى قلبك يا شيخه

  • i will master this in 5 mins. doh!!!

  • thanks

  • Good job Rebecca! Gracias

  • thanks a lot .:)

  • thank you! you teach better then my cwe proffesor jj

  • how bout AT HOME?

  • @stupidferns That would be another function of that preposition which is stating where an action took or takes place.

I work at Mc donnals. At focuses on a specific place of a city.

For example: I live in New York and I work at central park.

IN is used for location as in : names of cities or town names.

AT for specific places within the city.

  • I hope you don't mind a little constructive criticism.

How could you make something so simple so complicated?

    at -> hours

    on -> days

in -> long periods of time

    GAME OVER

"Say 'in' if you're not sure". That's the worst advice I've ever heard.

  • @hitechenglish I find your comment a little bit bold if you don't mind me saying. With all due respect " if she had said that there would probably been no point in recording a video " you moron.

  • WOW, WOW, WOW, Rebecca thanks a lot , completely lost and doing the mistake of not using the proper preposition while conversing with others. Now is a lot more clear, my first language is spanish, I'll continue to take full advantage of your videos, thanks for posting those : ))

  • Do you know what a postposition is?

  • thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • Thanx it was really useful.

  • I tell people to fill in the blank of this sentence:

The squirrel ran ________ the bushes. Most of the prepositions fit in the blank, like: in, under, over, toward, on......

  • hello iam Mina from Egypt

thank you Rebecca for that video, really useful,

but i have a question,i need to know more about prepositions for places

shall i say (I play violin in cairo opera house) or (i play violin at cairo opera house) ?

  • wow!!! this was so clear explenation! and short went right to the point that I understood. I am english 098 and we are going to have our compass test en sept. and I need to learn as much I can. Gracias Rebeca for your help.

  • Rebecca ,the only problem is the audio ,either you are very far from the micro or the micro is too weak, or the room is too big, also, we hear the sound from the garbage truck and other cars and trucks from outside, would you mind closing windows next time? Thanks. Excellent class and very clear explanation. Good Luck!

  • that's been very usefull, thanks :D

  • As a college student preparing for tofel- ibt, I'd really need a person to read my blog. It would be very good if someone could leave comment or even grade it.The grading process is from A+ to F. I'd be very glade for for your support.

    below is my blog

  • "...In this lesson..."

Why "in"? Why not "On this lesson..." Why not "at this lesson"?

Thanks in advance for your explanation.

(Why not "thanks on advance"?) Hehehe.

  • thank u ;]

  • thanx alot

  • Thx for the video?

Can you explain the at/on/in in the context of place?

  • Among the different parts of speech in the English language, prepositions are actually the simplest in form but the most complicated in use. I am actually an English subject teacher and I just happened to view your video presentations. If you wouldn't mind Rebecca, send me your e-mail add for more questions. I really want to exchange ideas with you. By the way, I am currently teaching somewhere in the Philippines. Hope to hear from you soon.

  • is this right, at morning?

  • @snowbelle20 "in the morning"

"I eat sausage and pancakes in the morning."

  • thanks

  • prepositions are sometimes confusing but if you study very hard you can dominate this!! cheer up!! don't give up

  • You're absolutely right. Just try to learn a few at a time, or even one at a time. Good advice, Jose.

  • @RebeccaESL Your teaching helping attitude makes you stand out Rebecca.

  • i liked it!!!

  • thx~ but i wonder why we used 'in' to 'in the morning'

morning is more bigger than 'day or date' ??

  • Some are expressions which do not necessarily follow the general rules. These exist just to make your life more difficult! Sorry, that's just how it is!

All the best to you, in any case.

  • @ksksoonsss

    cus it sounds much better

  • @ksksoonsss it's bigger, not more bigger!

  • thank you !

  • Thank you very much Rebecca for your all your videos. Take care yourself.

  • Rebecca, you're the best!

I couldn't have understood it without you :)

  • Thanks Rebecca!! Great lesson.

  • When we're talking about transport, we use 'on' for vehicles that are 'higher than us' and maybe need steps to get there - on the train, on the plane, on the motorbike, on the camel. For other types of transport which are lower e.g. cars, we can say' 'in the taxi, in the blue car'.

  • @Georgia275 I would add that we also use 'on' for anything that does not have a roof or walls, such as a magic carpet, or a camel, even if it were lower than us.

  • @baigandine

Trying to think of more transport-related things....on the raft, on the moving walkway (at the airport), on the rollercoaster. A bit early for me...

  • Happy New Year to all our viewers. Thanks for watching and passing on your feedback. May you have a radiant year in 2010.

  • voice not so clear..

  • Thank you very much.

  • Thank for your explaination

  • It's really a problem, thanks Mrs. Rebecca

  • please teach us some about some one and somebody , i never ever learned n dident no the diffrent between these two words

  • @jhon786able thats true im kinda confused on how to use these 2 words..

  • Thanks, Great work

  • what about the places?

  • good lessons, but there i have not much trouble at all... my troubles get starting here, for example:

    1) at the office or in the office

2)at the corner or in the corner

3a)there was a shot at Bank of America or

3b)there was a shot in the Bank of America

4a)at the swimming world championships or

    4b)at swimming world championships

i hope to find these answers before getting crazy , because just for not knowing how to use those preposition someone could say my english is too basic

  • I will be in the office today. Call me tomorrow I will be at the office. Is very defficulty beacuse all language evolve by the time. We say "I'am on the plane" but the perfect way is "I'am in the plane" I hope this help you for a least in the first one.

  • @titoheman Let me help you.

1 -> "At the office", means for example, that he's like around the office, not necessarily inside the office. 2 is the same.

3a/b -> Same thing here, but you need to use an article at 3a "at the Bank.." or "at a bank..".

4a/b -> It's the same as this example: "He spilled the milk all over the floor", some specific milk or "He spilled milk all over the floor", can be any milk.

Thats it, very easy, I know your comment was 10 months ago.. but..

    Good bye.

  • @titoheman sorry for the late reply...

Use "at the office/bank" when you mean "while/when in the office" or "located there". Use "in the office/bank" for "within/inside". Use "at the corner" when "located there"; use "in the corner" ONLY when you refer to something that is at a corner INSIDE a room. Always use an article after "at" when the noun is a proper innanimate noun (a proper name); if you mean at someone's house, don't use an article (eg: at John's).

  • @titoheman sorry for the late reply...

  • @titoheman

It depends on what u r trying to say.

You could say at the office or in the office, For example, "My car is at the office." "It's hot in the office."

"Let's meet at the corner." "Stand in the corner!"

"There was a shot at B.O.A." "Someone was shot in the B.O.A."

"At the swimming world championships" because "swimming world championships" is specific so you need "the"

  • @titoheman Since those are all places you would use at.

You cannot use the preposition 'in' because it is for time periods.

Examples: I'm at the office; At the corner (At the street corner); there was a shooting at the Bank of America (remember to use 'the' because it designates a specific place, which is the Bank of America in this case); I'm at the swimming world championships (you would at 'the' to this sentence).

    Hope this helps :)

  • thanks alot i was not good in this but now I am !

  • Thank you so much for this, it helps shed some light on the proper use of these prepositions.. :)

How about their use in relation to places? Thanks!

  • You can all find sample TOEFL essays and other tips and advice on getting a higher score on your exam through my website goodlucktoefl.

  • Hello! you are a very good teacher! :) thank you a lot... Waiting for more :)

  • Thanks. Glad it helped.

  • Rebecca, I'm Arabian. and english is my second language.. If I got accepted in the university.. they're gonna test my english (Toefl PBT).. and I dunno what to do.. It's just the reading what confuses me.. any suggestions? I wanna get a high score :) thanks

  • There are many skills involved in reading comprehension for the TOEFL, including skimming and scanning. Make sure you practice these skills, build up your vocabulary and also learn to answer each of the different types of questions that appear on the exam.

Also, work with a good teacher if possible and / or join a TOEFL exam preparation program.

    All the best to you!

  • Thanks rebecca !! ^_^ I'll join a Toefl program I think. I dunno how that didn't come on my mind lol.. <3 :D

  • RebeccaESL i need your help. i'm getting ready for my TOEIFL exam , pleas can you give me some advice.

i can give you my e-mail.

    Thanks you are the best.

  • The best advice is as follows:

    a) Work thoroughly through one of the good TOEFL preparation guidebooks, such as Delta or Barron's.

    b) Join a TOEFL exam preparation class or find a private teacher experienced in the TOEFL exam.

    c) Remember you need a teacher to give you feedback on your speaking and writing, even if you do the reading and listening sections alone.

    All the best!

  • nice class!!! thanks Rebecca!! XD

  • Thanks you, Thanks you, Thanks you, Thanks you, Thanks you, Thanks you.

    Waiting for more.

  • That was very kind of you. Glad the lessons helped you.

Actually, we can either say just "Thank you' or 'Thanks to you', though the first is more common :-)

  • hi I´m from mexico I like to learn english and I just want to say thanks for helping us keep going good bye

    Greetings from Calgary, Canada.

  • You're veeeery welcome :-)

  • Thanks Rebecca. very helpful video... is there another one with the same prepositions in relation to place?

  • Will record one for you. How's that?

  • you are so kind!!!! thanks again!!

  • PS A very nice video. Thank you.

  • Christmas is more like an 'occasion', you always use on when talking about occasions.

    For example:

On the day of his daughters wedding.

Lets do something special on his birthday.

    Lets go out on Christmas

  • Actually, in England they may say 'at Christmas' and in North American we tend to say 'on Christmas Day".

  • very nice, thank you

  • Im 7 years studying english, and i still have problems with these prepositions =(

for example christmas is an specific date, so do I have to use AT Christmas or ON christmas?, this is quite messy= (
