I find it weird to say that the 70's was Patti Labelle's prime when she totally sang the hell out of "Purple Rain" during a tribute for Prince. remembering her hits during the 80's and 90's makes it sound more weird to me. I guess for me Patti Labelle is timeless.
Much love for Stacy Dash and Nona Hendryx, the main two who can jam with Ms Patti and hold their own.
I think they're rockin' that Norma Kamali drag....My Mom used to rock her shit back in the day. Like Labelle, Norma was pretty ahead of her time, too.
If you want somebody to be your slave If you want somebody that you can save If you want somebody that you can hurt Well I ain't somebody to treat like dirt.... Oh I, can't stand it when you call my name Can't stand it - It's driving me insane Can't stand it - you're my hearts desire Hurts like fire If you want somebody that you can save GET YOU SOMEBODY NEW FIERCE FIERCE FIERCE!
Seriously, whats fascinating to me is how ahead of their time they were..think about it, Before Madonna knew a fuckin thing about metallic bras, Sarah was doin that in the early 70's...before Michele N'degaeocello knew a damm thing about being bi sexual rock chick, Nona was doin that in the sixties with Dusty Springfield..and before Beyonce' was doin sexually explicit stuff on stage, there was Nona and Grace Jones. A group like Labelle, became the grandmothers of doin shit off the beaten path.
@MisterCrazyLegs I thought dusty springfield came from the sixties? People been doing shock rock/ performances since greek theater..lol It's not new...
Wow they were so funky and down. I love the Christina, Pink, Mya, and Kim's but never heard these beautiful singers sing. I grew up with the other version and thought wow they must be top dogs to be up there. But these ladies.. DAMN!
I'm particularly drawn to the second verse: WELL IF YOU NEED A SUCKA THAT YOU CAN HATE: BITCH THAT'S SOMETHIN YOU KNOW I AIN'T! ! ! (ok, i know they didn't say bitch, but THEY COULDA. . .LOL) Go 'head Miss Nona Hendryx
These bitches sang the SHIT out them songs. These are DIVAS not them overproduced products of today. They wasnt about all the bling bling and trappings of todays pop tarts. these were political sistas.
These ladies had so much FUN every time they performed. U just don't see that type of spark or ferocious hunger in artists today. EVERY PERFORMANCE Labelle had seemed as if this is what they were bred to do.
these broads are not to be played with. And I defy ANYONE to come up with a chick group that has been able to sing songs that range in between socially conscious songs like "Before You Go to Hollywood"...to the intergalactic tribal song that is, "Chameleon/Gypsy Moths". There is NOT ONE group out here today or even in yrs past that can carry Labelle's bras and panties...NOT ONE!!
I love this Glam Rock Look they had... They were so funky, each added their own unique flavor to the group's overall look and sound!!!! And Patti was dropping it and doing the Charleston!!!! LOVES IT!!!!!
I love THE BAND, Mr. James Budd Ellison (R.I.P) betta work. He could funk the hell out of some Labelle. . .that's right, Budd and boys in the band put some STANK on this one, y'all!
I love the band too! They are fantastic! Do you know who they are and what they went on to afterwards? Where they the original band from the studio (The Meters maybe? )or a touring band?
They all look amazing here. I LOVED when Patti started lady marmalade in the beginning and then in 'get you somebody new' when she said ' I can't stand it' haha
Sarah's voice is fierce. Nona's is beautiful. And Patti's is too amazing to describe in 500 characters. Check out a video of this live on my channel, they did Getcha Somebody New at the concert I went to and they still got it good!!! These ladies are amazing at their art and they are like a painting of quality, they never fade.
Cornelius Washington, how do you know so much about Labelle's drag. Do tell! BTW: the girls performed this song at The Apollo last weekend. Still fierce. . .
The album is great as well. I wore it out! Musically, get you somebody new was so rich in color and patterns, I heard something different almost every time I played it!
@Kamaria7 That heffa knows. That's where she got her moves from. She studied the heck out of Tina Turner. And if she didn't know her daddy showed her every video of them he could find and said here do this.
COME ON NOW!!! WHO U TELLING! SO GOOD 2 MEET YOU! NONA W/ HER AVANT GARDE/FUTURISTIC OUTFITS & MAASI INSPIRED FACE ART LONG BEFORE MICHELE, FLOETRY, DUMB ASS BRITNEY, CRISTINA AGULERA, & WHOEVER
THE F ELSE OUT THERE- WAS BORN. OH & F* A GAGA K?! WANNA B! OH & THEN THERE'S-GRACE- W/ EVERYTHING FROM OUTFITS TO "LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF ITS TIME" ANDROGINOUS LOOK! & PLEASE DON'T GET ME STARTED ON HATS! BOTH W/ BODIES OF 33 Y.O. MODELS (IMAN & TINA TOO). THESE ARE THE TRUE INNOVATORS!!
Damn, Patti was dropping it like it was H.O.T. back then...I love the three of them together. I can't wait to hear the new CD....This is exciting...For real.
My first voice teacher/hag(LOL) wore Norma outfits all the time, especially when I'd take her out to the theatre, etc. She'd turn those stuck up New York matrons on their heads!! Once, I took her to "21" in NYC...people were coming over to the table ALL NIGHT!!!LOL
Good for her. Being/dressing "normal" is the most over-rated character trait in the world. Give me Labelle over dreary "normal" groups any day. I mean who the hell wanted to see Parliament Funkadelic or Kiss come out in business suits?
Looks were not necessarily Patti's gift. Leave that to Sarah and the body to Nona. Your mentality has ushered in the boat load of crappy singers today. Long live Patti and the less than gorgeous girls that SANG!!!(Also, I'm guessing you aint much to look at).
Rachelle Ferrell, Patti Austin,Whitne is still bad, Stephanie Mills, Roberta Flack, Kelly Price, Lisa Fischer,Vesta,Angela Winbush, Denise Williams, Randy Crawford,Anita Baker Dianne Reeves, Ledisi-she will get there. Theres a few more, not including gospel my point is to illustrate that we will always have talented singers, there just not marketed at least not today. Joni Mitchell said it best they-music exexs expect you- the artist to go off and die.
The vibe, Patti LaBelle's fantastic voice, the blockbuster way they perform, their show-womanship - everything, is so rave it's beyond belief. The song is one of the greatest songs of all time.
in my opinion, they were the greatest female group ever. As much as I appreciate what Diana and her girls did to bring the "girl group" concept to the forefront, LABELLE, is / was the exaggerated-steroid version of the Supremes. What they were able to do vocally was just unheard of, with Patti leading the way....they were awesome. I heard that Lenny Kravits was prodicing an album with labelle reunited. I cant believe it...FINALLY!~
I a damn shame that most of todays' music do not have lyrics that need to be heard, especially by the black population who need it the most. Music seems to be the only way to inform black people since most of them too are lazy to read. I am a black-woman myself, I know. We need to put the politics back in our music. Peace.
This video demonstrates a singing group. What we have today is an entertainment group. The girl groups today have the ability to carry a note, but they need backup singers for the backup singers when they sing live or they sound like crap. Nona and Sarah sound like four people.
I saw them do this show live,Labelle landing from above in a cloud of feathers,Nona signs like the best...what happened to Sarah Dash i wonder....All 3 such voices.
I love how all these ignorant (I'm assuming) young folks don't know the history of the song. This was originally recorded in 1974 by LABELLE! The CHRISTINA A. version may sound good to YOUR ears probably because of new recording technology, studio gloss and Chris DID do justice to the song and is a great, "REAL SINGER" in her own right but for sheer, raw, no frills, unadultered soul no one can really touch Miss PATTI, NONA HENDRYX and SARAH DASH. Look them up and learn your history, kiddies!
it was overwrought to say the least. christina thinks that in order to show how good she is she has to do vocal stunts. Patti's version, the original, is TIMELESS. EVERYONE knows Lady Marmalade and they know who originated it...and it wasnt Christina.
The Patti war continues, For all of you who were not born in the 70's this when "Lady Marmalade" was released in the original version by a group called "Labelle" with Patti Labelle sining leads vocals

Christina and her friends did a good version. BUT NOTHING MORE THAN A GOOD VERSION FOR THE MOVIE AND MTV.PATTI LABELLE did THE ORIGINAL and 70's LADY MARMALADE BY MISS LABELLE IS THE FIRST,AND THE BEST.I do not disagree that Cristina has much of talent and mixed beauty, as a latin descend as myself. I'm very proud that she does lot of sucess in the USA.But Labelle has voice, talent and lots and lots of more black soul in her blood, and the american black music is the greatest rythm of america.

ooh snapz.. dis ole ladys steel dis jam from mi gyrl chriztina agulara..das messed up son.. why dey be steelin songz lik dis... i lovez chriztina.. shes mi gyrl ... 4 realz kid
I really do hope you weren't serious with that statement you typed. Because that doesn't make any sense. Everyone and there mama (maybe except you) knows LaBelle originally sang this song. Look the song up....why do you think Patti sang it with the girls who remade it at the 44th Grammy Awards in '02?
Dude...Labelle created this song in the 1970's before Christina and the crew were even born! Plus, the singers today don't have half the talent, respect, and inventor status as these ladies and other old school artists. Us younguns are just messed up with the tired same ole' rap music and everyone sing through their nose r&b and pop songs. It is too manufactured today. Even the 1980's had more creativity.
Thank you!! I was remember this song when I was in day care, and my mother played that album alot. It seems that the singers today who has voices and charisma are overlooked by those who have looks and lack vocal talent.
Excuse me, but These ladies recorded this song first and it topped the R&B, Pop &
Disco charts, in 1974, and they made history by becoming the first Black group to perform at the Metropolitian Opera House which is now Carnegie Hall!!! And if it wasn't for these legends, many singers like Christina, Pink, Destiny's Child and Mary J would have had the succes they're having today!
NONA! NONA! NONA! WEARING ONE OF HER 2012 OUTFITS IN 1970- NO SURPRISE... MADAME AVANT GARDE, YOUR FASHION SENSE HAS ALWAYS BEEN AHEAD ITS TIME.

I'm 40 and I have to say it seems surreal that people think Christina Aquilera originated this song.

She didn't STEAL it from Christina etc. It's the other way around! Get your facts right. This song is from the 70's.
