  • Looks good. What was the height? I have built to 9.1 metres using Engineered Papercrafts technique.

  • Why is this an architectural competition? It has literally nothing to do with architecture and everything to do with structural engineering.

  • @yahoochiewatchie you don't think there is some kind of architecture and engineering? when foster uses a certain engineering solution in a known bank building is this unconnected to architecture?

  • @ujbecker Presumably you're referring to the architect, Norman Foster? He is an architect, not a structural engineer. That's why he wanted half the number of supports in the Milau Viaduct - until the structural engineer (whom no doubt he employed) told him how many piers he actually needs. With that in mind, Foster does not 'use a certain engineering solution' - his structural engineer does. In any event, the paper challenge does not promote architecture - its an engineering challenge.

  • @yahoochiewatchie I hardly believe you are an architect, since I don't know any architect that really wants to seperate architecture from engineering. Of course there is the engineer that does the calculations, but the architect decides which way to go and why. You can build a paper tower of all kinds from the engineering perspective. and what about le corbusier? would you say he was 'only an engineer' since after all he proposed to build houses of piloti?

  • @ujbecker Of course im not an architect. Im a structural engineer. The paper tower challenge is about getting the thing to stand up (engineering), not about making it look nice (architecture) - hence my point.

  • @yahoochiewatchie and you thing "stand up" and "look nice" have no connection? When I think a house would be beauty without pillars in the air, so I won't need to do pillars? and btw: if architecture would be just "look nice", we could pack and go home. architecture is a complex process around building taking all kind of factors into account, ideologies, beauty, people, chemistry, physics, social sience, etc. and also, yes: engineering

  • @ujbecker Of course they're connected - just not in this instance. I.e building a tower out of paper, the object of the challenge is to build as high as you can. Nobody cares, in this instance, what it looks like. I'm not commenting on architecture in general....

  • @yahoochiewatchie so i can tell you that there was a higher tower in the competition, but this one still got better marks. Why? because height is not the only goal.

  • @ujbecker ...fascinating.........

  • What is the song?

  • i have an engineering project that i need help on. i have to make a paper tower with 1 piece of paper and 6 inches of tape and it has to be at least 4 and a half feet tall and it has to stand up for 5 seconds. any help ?

  • the bigger tubes are the struts and the smaller tubes are used to connect them.

    FOCUS

    Very good design.

  • we used only papertubes (of two different diameters) and cheap white glue. We connected the bigger tubes with inserted and folded smaller tubes at the edges.

  • did you use material other than paper tubes?then how do you connect the tubes?

  • only paper and usual white glue. we took small tubes, folded them in the middle, put glue on them and then entered them between two tubes. through the angle, the tension and glue they are held together.
