1. The Primary Chronicle say nothing about "that the Russian nation is descended primarily from Finno-Ugric tribes". Looks like you have read it in strange way. And don't trust the chronicle too much at all - it isn't an objective source and demands critical analisys.
2. Chud' was used as a general name for Finno-Ugric people, from Komi and Udmurts to Eesti and Veps (Chud' Zavolotskaya, Chud' Pskovskaya, Chud' Otyatskaya etc.). It isn't a definite nation.

Neither was Christianized that time, though, so it is difficult to talk about any Russification. The confrontation between Russians and Erzya was terminated only with the invasion of Mongols, who have ravaged Russia as well as land of Erzya and laid the both under tribute.

I should mention that the Kiev principality was under the sway of Mongols too, before it was conquerred by Lithuanians, - from 1243 to 1362 (i.e. more than 100 years). Mongols (later - Tatars of Golden Horde) have collected tribute, the Russians sometimes were taking part in their campaigns, but they couldn't live in Russian forests and, excepting small quantity of Baskaks, didn't live in Russian cities too.
