Subject is under the effect of a mind controlling compulsion... It's feasible that any decisions made or experiences gained under such a haze wouldn't even grant the subject experience points.(problem solved)
This is indeed a question that seems to be open to GM interpretation. I'm inclined to agree with Webhead123 in this case - he basically summarizes my thoughts on the matter. I don't think the new gained level/HD matters if the spell was cast with successful results when the target was of the appropriate level (7 or less).
That spell should stay in effect. Raising a level is not super natural. (like in a video game where the player lights up,lol) It is just pretty much a point where you have gotten enough experience to be a more skilled adventurer. The only time it would end if the character went from 7th to 8th level.
As a GM, I would not break the Lesser Geas if the target's hit dice changed before the spell expired. In my interpretation, the spell is only checking HD to validate the target at the *time of casting*. Once the spell is cast, the target deemed valid and the Will save failed, the spell goes into effect for the duration, regardless of subsequent changes to the target. I wouldn't even permit a second Will save upon gaining the new HD. Cast...save...live with the results.
@Webhead123 Thanks buddy it's good to be back! Ha! I love that "Cast... save... live the results" Thanks for your input. Getting mixed opinions on this one.
I would keep it in effect. the compulsion took affect prior to the abstract "leveling". i do not think there is ever a case where you get a retroactive saving throw when leveling. if the caster gained a level during that time would the duration increase? unless of cory story would be better served with the pc breaking the compulsion. fun>story>mechanics imo. Cheers.
@masterofflowers That's a good point about the caster increasing in level. If the target is permitted to be able to be "reevaluated" as a target for an on-going spell, should changes to the spell's values be similarly permitted if the caster increases in level or acquires magical gear that boosts the spell?
I'd say second saving throw.. Based on the flavour of how I run my game - The character has gained power and so may break free but was affected initially so it shouldn't just auto-end.

@YourDungeonMaster Ok so one more vote for ending the compulsion if the target attains 8HD correct? Thanks for your input!

@masterofflowers Valid point! I'd have to rule no, the spell's duration would not increase if the caster gained a level. Thanks for your input!

I would give the lvl 8 character the benefit of the doubt and say it breaks it upon leveling. It only affects them while they have 7 HD

@blackbarnz It's definitely a tough one yeah.

i would have the spell stay in effect till it runs out by its self. after all it is magick and magick should trump all other rules
