art of sound unbeliveble this is the difference for great artist(gould)and the rest of the world of pianist "machine"lisista yundi li, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc
very interesting indeed, thanks a million for uploading!
i agree with goggyli, the piano sounds amazing. if this is the recording that gould made for columbia in 1956, then it's definitely a steinway.
as much as i love glenn gould, beethoven without the affection just isn't really beethoven... :) seems to me gould's somber, non-sentimental interpretation, while elsewhere so refreshing, don't really do this wonderfully dramatic piece justice. schnabel's take, though... transcendental!
Thanks for posting--I was curious to see what Glenn would do with this masterpiece. My faves for 111 are of course Schnabel (the universe comes to a halt while he's playing) and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (absolute technical perfection and fine musicianship). I'm not sure I agree with Glenn's tempos in the 3rd and 4th variations and I thought he used too much rubato in the early measures of the last variation. But a very interesting rendition.

By the way, that is the 1st time, when in classical music there are Jazz elements! (starting from 6:38)
Beethoven is the first classical composer, who has used jazz elements in his music!

I think this rendition comes close to what you feel when reading Thomas Mann's description of the piano sonata 32 in his novel "Dr. Faustus".
