The guitar sounds are technical, progressive, and mainstream, so they lack the brutal, simple, headbanging riffs that give death metal its soul. Even worse, the vocals are overly dominant, not guttural and raw, so you can't get down with the riffs. The new Slayer songs like "World Painted Blood" have the same problem: it's like listening to a fucking sermon, the words are so clear and dominant and

They really are the best current band, Seven Chalices is incredible. I don't think they'll ever top Genocide Chants to Apolokian Doom though. Pure evil in audio form.
