that lob was how murray saved match point at this years aussie open!! pretty much the exact same play. federer plays a drop shot then safin/murray scrambles for the lob. uncannnyyyy.

Safin at his best would beat anyone...as this match showed...shame he got the hip and knee injuries and needed surgery after winning the Aussie Open 2005, was never the same afterwards.

Agree. If Safin did not have the physical injuries and the mental issues, he would have lowered Fed's Grand Slam tally by 5 majors, especially the US Open and Aussie Open. This rivalry should have been the Agassi vs. Sampras of its time. For myself, Marat will always be remembered for this match and the US Open Final against Sampras.

Federer was way better in 2005 than 2009. He has much more spring in his legs. I am not a big Fed fan, but the Fed of 2005 would have dismantled Del Potro in the 2009 US Open Final.

This is the Marat I miss seeing! He was just out there and ready to take on anything Federer threw at him and it was good to see him triumph. Marat showed us at Wimbledon 2008 that he's still got some juice left in him and I think he can win another slam, it'll be tough, but if he has his head screwed on correctly he can beat absolutely anybody! He has a temper and he breaks raquets like I don't know what LOL, but it's that personality that makes me love him anyway.

Safin and Nalbandian can beat ANY player when they are on their game and when they put their heart into tennis and stay focused.
