England needed a penalty to beat a Czechoslovakia side who lost all of their group games, they were the only team not to score against Brazil and they wilted against West Germany...best team in 1970? You've got to be joking!! If they were why were they so heavily criticised by their press when they returned home?
Funnily England seemed better than Germany in 1970 and Germany seemed better than Italy but each time the stronger team lost. Could be that England would have been the only team capable of beating Brazil. Who knows. Maybe Italy could have done that but they were exhausted from the half finals. Easy game for Brazil who can celebrate another great team.
@TheStandofTheLastGuy Well we should have beaten them in the group game in the 100 degrees heat and the final was pouring with rain , like manchester in March, so i think we would have .
As Gary Lineker has said, football is a game which lasts 90 minutes and finally, Germany wins... Sorry my English, but I can write perfect Finnish! Teistä ei kuitenkaan kovin moni osaa suomea, koska meitä on vain reilu 5 miljoonaa
okay. the same Gerd Müller who scored the last goal of the tournament in '74 and made them world champion. Damm....That german striker was amazing, Der Bomder. Perhaps one of the best players of all times!
It is interesting to see that a few German fans entered the field celebrating with the players, which is impossible to do now considering all of the securities etc.
You could argue that English football never recovered from this. We were world champions, we'd run Brazil close in the group games, and would have drawn with them if Jeff Astle hadn't missed an open goal. We were 2-0 up against W Germany, but they came back and beat us. This and the defeat to Poland at Wembley marked the end of our golden era.
@NickDuvet I think the writing was on the wall when the Hungarians won 6-3 at Wembley in the 50s. The press said 'fluke' and the return game in Budapest was set to restore England's pride, needless to say they lost 7-1 in Budapest. They didn't learn and progress as Holland, Spain, Germany and even Portugal did and are now reaping the bitter harvest of what was, truth be told, misplaced arrogance.
@dermot51 If gordi Banks had been in goal that day , England would have 2 stars above the three lions badge instead of a miserly 1, which they have now
1middlesbrough, Germany did England a favour by beating them. There is no way England would have beaten Brazil in the final. When they lost 1-0 to Brazil in the group stage, Gerson, their main playmaker was out injured. With him fit in the final England would have had no chance. England were the only team who failed to score against Brazil in 1970.
@helltopo How can you say that was a favour, England had good chances to beat Brazil and most of the Brazil team said England was the hardest game. Gerd Muller has often stated England was the best team in that competition, with good cause as England dominated for long periods the Brazil and Germany game
Labone and Bonetti in No-Man's Land.
You simply cannot let Muller drift like that.
Muller had done little up until then.

A disastrous afternoon. 2-0 up, with 20 minutes to go.
Labone, the English number 5, lost concentration here.
Terrible ball-watching, but he was very tired, and that heat, that awful heat.

That's what England has lacked for decades, ever since Jimmy Greaves was eased out - a decent goal-hanger who can put 'em away clinically every time.

"Moore comfortably winning in these battles with Gerdy Muller".
Not when it mattered most, though.
Nice one, Gerd.
