@danpoindexter great core exercise and sends your breathing through the roof. Total body, fat burning, stability, flexibility, intense cardio... yeah, pretty much a pointless exercise.
not hating on timbahwolf, you are very very strong, but overhead squats are almost pointless. they are difficult but the amount of weight it takes to makes your legs and ass tired is way more then what you can hold over your head. and just hold heavy weight over your head is not going to to do you much good.
That is a hard ass exercise. When I could RAW squat 515lbs full ROM (like you are here) I remember trying to do this with just 95lbs. The balance required is insane.
the haters on these videos are unreal... this is an incredibly impressive video. motivation for me to stop being a pussy i don't squat that deep on shoulders. props sir.
i was actually thinking about practicing snatches and oh squats at the playground...shoveling the dirt/grass to make a nice soft patch since i dont have a lifting platform; does anyone know if a 45 lb bar would still be warped by 2 iron plates like in this video?
@duperman those olympic bars shouldn't warp at all, people pick up 500 lbs and higher with them and they stay straight but they flex pretty easily, just with 225 you can feel the ends wobbling while lifting
hello if anyone can answer my question, i wondering if it is bad on your knees to squat that low, is it? if not is this the best way at building muscle on ur legs?
Her feat was no doubt impressive but she still has nothing on this guy. Don't mean to be offensive, I just hate it when people compare women to men. Men are far and away more elite athletes in basically all respects. I'm not saying women can't be athletic or even, in some cases, stronger than some men, but for the most part, comparisons are really stupid. Women, in terms of athletics and all other applications of strength, will always pale in comparison to their male counterparts.
@Derek78787878 The best effort he's posted is doing 15 half-squats with 12 extra pounds. She outperformed him in both absolute and relative terms, yet you say she has nothing on him?
My main point was to voice what most would consider the fact that, by and large, males are physically superior to females and comparisons are stupid. Maybe she has a more impressive OHS than this one particular individual, but I'd wager that he is still overall a hell of a lot stronger. Either way, take her male crossfit counterpart and she will no doubt pale in comparison. IMO, comparing women to men in athletics is akin to comparing the lightest oly weightlifting classes
poundages to the heaviest weight class poundages. There's really no comparison. Anyways, maybe in this particular case she has a more impressive OHS, but I'd still wager the guy is more athletic/stronger overall. Even if he isn't, male/female athletic comparisons are generally futile.
the form you put forth into this would make even the best of the best olympic lifters jealous. every second from 1-15 is perfect. i see form #1 key to gaining overall improvement. no point in doing ANY exercise if you do not use proper form. weight and reps is always secondary to gains. i hope one day to achieve the attributes you have (balance, proportion, strength and overall fitness). you're clips are truely an inspiration. i've read somewhere that you maintain around 5% BF year round? crazy
well not really as the best ooly lifters do it with 2-2.5xbw and perfect form, in fact their form would use more of the heel which is actually more beneficial (avoiding knee injury etc)
Yes, his knees are going past his toes (by far). You want to keep your knees over your ankles, this way you are using mainly glutes and hamstrings. This also protects your knees and doesn't overload your quads (which is a smaller muscle than glutes and hams- which is why he can't do double body weight.
Indeed that is funny, you thought that the quads are the largest muscle group. Yes that is hilarious, because it's wrong and you speak as though you are correct. Study anatomy prior to saying stupid stuff please. The glutes and hams combine to make the largest muscle GROUP in the body and by far the strongest if your training is anything worth noting. You are an idiot if you think you can load up 800lbs on your quads alone- a plumb fool.
Mechanical leverage is defined by work or torque that the muscle produces. This is determined by how far the axis of rotation is from the force line. To make it easy, the further you go down in the squat, the further away the hips and knees move from the actual force line (the weight).
anybody telling you not to go full ROM is probably secretly your enemy, encouraging you to get tendinitis
one of the most common causes of knee problems is a strength imbalance between quad and hamstring because they failed to properly stress hamstrings(which need a full ROM in a squat).
if you arent going for a PR in a specifically higher than full ROM lift, use a full ROM
There are actually some compeing bodybuilders who claim that doing squats deeper that parallel is destroying your knees - thus "bodybuilding squats" which are done usually in 1/3 of the possible ROM are believed to be superior.... by people who are dumb enough to listen to such shit.
I do OHS with only 70-75 kilos for triples (triples of power snatch and overhead squats are just complimentig the first movement) - but man, id does wonders for your core!
You do not have to do it if you think it is to hard on you - but do not blame this on the exercise. I do not know about you - but the people all over the world (except Western societys) use to squat full ROM all day long (lack of chairs and dirty floor); they have not unlearned the natural ability all toddlers show. If you can not squat the full way down and up again (or deadlift or overhead press or...) you are injured.
You can hold the number of people running or playing soccer against the small number of people doing the olympic lifts - in fact that is what was done here - and still get far less injuries in weightlifting. With proper coaching these are safe movements with many benefits. We have club members lifting 50 years plus - still healthy and fit like nearly nobody else of their age.

Well actually yes it is. Lmao. I have seen many olympic weightlifing contests and was even going to start competing myself as i was told i could go for the olympics.
Also in olympic weightlifting they don't do squats. Indeed part of the movement in a snatch and a clean may contain a squat in order to drive the weight up but they dont repeat it as shown in this video.
Being a competitve athlete is not recreational training - but it is not "highly dangerous". In fact (statistics) olympic lifting is far less danegerous than running or soccer.
