Agreed. The primes when attached on a 500D will own the iPhone any day. But, a beginner will probably use the 18-55 for any situation so this is comparing stock video quality.
Funny how all of the camera people are mad that the iPhone 4S looked better in the video. 'Well if you were using the proper lens type i think the results would have been different! I need to see it with an X lens at 100% quality to make a judgement'.
We all know a true expensive camera by itself would beat the 4S, but as he said, on auto settings this was a nice showing for the iPhone.
Too bad the 500D can't record in 30fps in 1080p because if it can that would be awesome and add in an L series hunk of glass and the video quality would be :O
@josephfoster30 thats what happens with no manual controls over the crappy video modes on the t1i. photo wise it takes good photos with L glass. the kit lens with t1i has a higher apeture ( 4-5.6) i'm sure the iphone 4s has a 2.2 or something.. hence why the iphone looks brighter.
well the iPhone just got owned..... Then again what do you expect.... Your comparing a professional piece of photography equipment to a phone designed for technically retarded people....
You can tell the fps on the iphone 4s sucks ass, there is a major obvious lag that you can see when people are moving that you dont see in the canon version
Big difference is the framing is very different. In the Canon shot the frame includes the very bright buildings and sky in the back which makes everything in the foreground dark. The iPhone shot only includes the foreground part so the exposure is more balanced.
Because of The larger sensor, u won't be able to isolate your subject and blur out the background with the iPhone 4s tiny sensor and lack of a shallow depths of field.
I'm a Canon fan but this particular Canon wasn't really made to take awesome videos. It's interesting though that smartphones have already surpassed these older DSLRs.
The real reason the iPhone looks better is because the sensor is scaling the footage better than the Canon. All Canon DSLRs suffer from poor aliasing when shooting scenes with extreme texturing or contrasting edges. In order for the sensor to drop the 18 megapixel image down to HD resolution it throws away entire rows of pixels, making for lots of aliasing. Known issue, hopefully addressed in upcoming models. iPhone wins these shots, but you won't be able to get the same lovely depth of field s
Why did you not point the iphone so it included the bright sky and buildng areas?
if your doing a test at least keep the same subject matter - with your framing in this test these locations might have well been shot on different days in different cities in different countries.
I think the 4S looks better here, i own a 500D and i get better quality then that here with the standard lens and i know the file sizes are big. If you compress them down it would look worse.
So... basically the difference between the iPhone 4S and the Canon 500D is that the Canon is louder and with the iPhone you can almost listen to the conversations.
The reason for the difference is simple. With the Canon video there is a lot more highlight (sky etc) And the iPhone is focused more on the pavement. Cameras always auto adjust for mid tones thus giving the iPhone more light in the shadow areas and making the Canon look like it has less definition. Having said that the iPhone is super impressive for a PHONE!
@vevoscksballs This is NOT a ridiculous comparison at all. The iPhone 4S is ALWAYS AVAILABLE to you since you carry it all the time. You can't carry the Canon 500D in your pocket. Autofocus is always better than manual focus for consumers. Try following your kids around with the 500D - you can't keep your kids in focus. 1080p video on an iPhone 4S is AWESOME!
the 4S offers great video for something that you will always have available in your pocket. thats all that really matters. obviously a dslr will be better when it really matters (low light) but more of an effort to remember and keep safe
the canon video is under-exposed. you would need to change the shutter speed and/or aperture to get a real comparison. plus, i would have to see them both in fcp at 100% to compare the quality.
@justskijec They were both on Auto... the 500D gives you very limited control over the video recording (no manual controls for shutter speed or aperture) anyway,
@mattwareham I don't know about the 500D, but I have a 60d and you can control both shutter speed and apperture. Go to movie mode, Menu -> Movie Exposure -> Manual
but you can change the lighting if you want, just press the av and scroll back and forth, you can make it lighter or darker. so technically you can change the shutter speed and aperture
@justskijec A well set up pro camera will obviously always be superior. I think the point of any promo video is to show the better than acceptable results iPhone 4s can give you to replace a regular point and shoot for consumers. I dont think anyone at Apple will ever imply these fit in your pocket gadgets are meant to deal with pro projects. But to have it in your pocket to do a Rodney King. Yowzer.
@FlatTube2 Ya I agree for sure. I just didn't want people instantly thinking that the iPhone is better. It might be though seeing the t1i is a few years old now. I personally am stoked to have my iphone 4S so I can hand it to people at weddings when I am the videographer and can add that video later of what the guests get etc.
Hmm as a canon user and a massive apple fan I am impressed greatly my the iPhone 4S but there is nothing like a proper camera lens with some good glass. I bet the video was shot with a horrid kit lens rather than a nice lens.
Still going to purchase a 4S and then use it alongside my canon 7D though!
@intrapeewee It was the standard 17-55mm kit lens. It was all shot for a feature on a website comparing the 4S with a bog standard DSLR kit. Obviously a better lens would get you better results, and the 500D is far from the best DSLR for video.
@mattwareham The Canon 17-55mm lens alone is more expensive than that camera. I presume you meant the 18-55mm IS lens, which costs 20% of the 17-55mm one, which is in a completely different league (although the differences would not be that great when stopped down and used for video).
@mattwareham 4s is great for slow scenes but it makes the videos really jerky for when there's a bit more "action". Not sure about T1i, but T2i doesn't have the same effect - it makes videos smooth at full resolution even when there are fast moving objects. Otherwise, great portable camera indeed - well done Apple :)
Agreed. The primes when attached on a 500D will own the iPhone any day. But, a beginner will probably use the 18-55 for any situation so this is comparing stock video quality.
